1996 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Red Label Rabajà - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (9/8/2006)
had at an Italian tasting- wow- nose with deep dark tar, dark fruit, some floral essence. what a mouth. tons of fruit, big soft round tannins, very youthful but so enjoyable even now. this is a thoroughbred wanting to run. easily my WOTN, and quite possibly one of my all time favorite wines. (97 pts.)

1985 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Bricco Rocche - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (9/8/2006)
Drank at Italian tasting. did well, competing with 3 Giacosa reservas. very interesting wine. a very subdued nose. maybe some leather, but where were the roses, tar and licorice? low expectations at this point. then in the mouth and smile. what a sensual wine. perfectly balanced, smooth, good fruits, secondary leathers, tobacco, leading to a seamless finish. no holes at all. a symphony in the mouth. (94 pts.)

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Red Label Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (9/8/2006)
drank at Italian tasting. wonderful wine. it seemed to be the feminine sister to the 96 riserva tasted in the same flight. I thought it was a touch too soft in comparison. (94 pts.)

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (9/8/2006)
consumes at an Italian tasting, so notes are lame. but a very good wine- won it's flight but paled in comparison to the Giacosa Barolo reservas. floral, good fruit. (92 pts.)

1990 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (9/8/2006)
drank at Italian tasting. still young. lots of fruit, but had some stiff competition including 3 Giocosa reservas and an 85 Ceretto Brunate that was showing well. (91 pts.)

1964 Enopolio di Bubbio Barolo Riserva - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (9/7/2006)
over the hill/oxidized NR (flawed)

some other wines at the tasting, although I was pour so I didn't write the name down. I know I'm missing a bunch cause I think we tasted around 18-20 wines:

98 La spinetta Barberia superiore- 92 wow- this wine has so much fruit and life in it, I can't believe it is a 8 year old barbara. a wine favored by a lot- reminded my of a California wine. yummy.
I didn't write any notes so cant comment on these except the were all very good.
1997 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra
1999 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala
2001 Conterno Fantino Barolo Sorì Ginestra
2001 Giovanni Manzone Barolo Le Gramolere

It was a terrific line up. I'm lucky to be involved with a very generous tasting group. I was so pleased to hear comments from non-piedmontphiles as to the quality of the wines top to bottom.
I've had a lot of the wines before, but never in such a large tasting. the thing that ressinated with my was how great the giacosa's Reserva's were. I had wondered before if they were that much better than the regular bottlings- they are!!
Hi Goofy - nice tasting and thanks for the notes.....I assume the '96 Giacosa Red Label you had was the Asili....the '96 Rabaja is a white label and the only Barbaresco Red Label made in '96 is Asili....2000 Rocche del Falletto, indeed a wine of great finesse and delicacy....and the 2000 Asili seems to be shutting down and not giving up much at this current time, even with extended decanting. Surprised the '90 Scavino BdF didn't show better....I've had two bottles in the past year and both have been superb. And yes, the '85 Bricco Rocche is a beauty, '82 is as well.

Giacosa Red Labels are indeed great wines, but they fail the bang for your buck test miserably, where-as think the white labels give a lot for the money.

Thanks again for the notes!

Ops, the 96 was a Barolo Red label- not a barbaresco.- I thought the Rabaja- it was out of this world- esp since I wasn't paying.
