Last night, I was in the cellar conducting an about once a year physical inventory. I was in the final stretches and was pulling the bottles from the corners and checking the contents of the bins versus my spreadsheet. I put some bottles back on the top shelf and turned to enter something on the laptop. I heard a clink and then felt shocking pain from my right foot. Apparently, I didn't put one of the sloped shouldered bottles back properly and it slid off, fell about 6 1/2 feet and landed on my toes.

I'm crediting the cork floor for the fact that the bottle didn't break and my toes weren't completely shattered. My "index" toe bore the brunt of it and may be broken, though.

Anticipating two questions: (i) it was a 2004 Casunuova de la Cerbaie Brunello di Montalcino and (ii) we usually don't wear shoes in the house and I was in bare feet.

Not to rain on anyones parade, but I wonder if a cork floor that is tainted could infect all the corks in a cellar. Cork taint is caused by a fungus. Depending on how cork flooring is processed, I wonder if it could survive to installation. This would result in one malodorous floor. The next question, is it contagious, and could it spread to the bottles in the cellar? The unknown dangers of cork flooring!!! Razz

So sounds like my concrete floor might not have been such a good idea.....!
BTW, lost a bottle to the floor already, 2000 Cos d'estournel....Frown

Bad luck, did you at least take in the aromas?

Oh i took in the aromas alright.....
until they were diluted by my tears!
Seriously, If you drop a few bottles on the floor of your cellar it really does smell great.

So, are you glad it turned out this way? Or would you trade a bottle of the good stuff for a healthy toe?

I have rubber flooring in my wine cellar. It's made of those thin rubber mats, like you'd find in a playroom. No chance of TCA in those and it has saved a couple of bottles along the way.

Same setup in our cellar. Not flashy, certainly, but it has saved me two or three bottles and a lot of swearing... Wink
Broke my first yesterday.
I pulled a bottle out of the racks. Took it upstairs for dinner.
Today when my wife went down to the cellar she smelled something and there was the remnants of a bottle on the floor with wine all over the place. I must have jostled the wine unknowingly and this one was near the one I pulled and somehow it fell out. (Did we have an earthquake or something? It only fell about a foot, but glass on a cement floor and there isn't much give.
It was an everyday drinker...nothing special.
