2018 Vincent Careme, Vouvray, Brut

I've had this wine before in other vintages but Vinnie hit the ball out of the park with this vintage. Not Champagne, but really enjoyable with a fine bead and probably one of the best non-champer sparkling wines I've had. I went back to get some more because at CDN$26 it's a steal.

- 2016 Beringer Chardonnay Private Reserve, a style we seek out very rarely these days, rich, big mouthful of pear, butter, honey, plush in the mouth, long on the finish. Beautiful deep gold colour, too. My wife and I agreed that the best descriptor for this wine might be “voluptuous.”  Sorry I bought only the one bottle.EDD6B2F8-06E9-43E7-BFBE-7AFF6F6313FE

We still have a few bottles of the 2015 in the cellar.  Maybe time to pop one to see how they are traveling.

2005 Paolo Scavino, Barolo, Carobric

Based on a bottle I had a couple of years ago I thought it better to drink my last one sooner than later. Not the case with this one. Excellent and still  plenty of life.

2005 Lucien & Andre Brunel, CdP, Les Cailloux

This one on the other hand probably should have been consumed earlier. Starting to get those pruney notes that I'm not crazy about. It was better with food, but then wine always is.

I got this invite in my email. While it may be a great event for those who attend, I just couldn’t justify $3000 for my wife and myself

So, instead I did one better. I invited Alex MacDonald over for dinner last night along with some fellow forumites, cellar trackers and beserkers including Sarbuze, EB 56, DoubleD, MC2wines, Greenwine, DaveS, Julie and Ian D.

Dinner- My wife’s Sunday sauce with homemade pasta.  Homemade ricotta and spinach ravioli with sage butter. Meatballs.  chicken with tomatoes, artichokes and herbs. Tiramisu and apple bundt cake.

The line up:

in the end, it was a great night and it was only slightly less expensive than the Zachys dinner.

BTW- all the wines were rocking.  I had little expectation for the 1983 Rayas since the cork was seeping to point that I had to wrap it with Saran Wrap, but it was terrific. The 2018 MacDonald is a monster. Decant it for 24 hrs at this point.  The 2001 Conterno barolo riserva was a real standout

How did you like the Cote Rotie? I hope you paired it with a big slab of meat

I really liked it.  And I had brought to a new restaurant hoping to pair it with lamb, but we ended up doing a chef's choice tasting menu, so it ended up being paired with Aleppo pepper grilled chicken and an amazing grilled octopus. But the wine was delicious on its own.  And they had Massican Annia on their list, which also went pretty well with the chicken/octopus.

Good to hear. Love his wines and I’ve only started getting to know his wines with the 2015 vintage. I managed to get some of his La Landonne as well but regrettably we won’t see his wines in my province as he is no longer represented here

2005 Produttori Del Barbaresco, Asili Riserva

Very disappointing. Five years ago when I opened the previous bottle I noted it was still quite tannic and needed time. Now it's even more tannic relative to the fruit.

2015 La Braccesca, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano

Very tasty, as usual, and excellent QPR. I'll be keeping my eyes open for the 2018.
