A disjointed mess. It didn't help that the server didn't properly decant; he just poured bottoms up in a decanter. Every glass poured had sediment.

Other than the poor decant, were you expecting much more from it?

I met someone from the Ceretto family earlier this year. We talked about wine and he thought that the 93 was likely past its prime. That conversation made me hopeful but prepared me for a less than stellar experience.

1998 Krug
2006 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 375ml
1989 Leoville Las Cases
1992 Dominus
1998 Ornellaia (back-up)

Nice line-up. Hopefully, they appreciated the effort and quality. My mother in-law would have tasted the Krug and said that it was no asti spumante.

1998 Krug - gorgeous and young. I'd love to make this my house wine. What a treat.
2006 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 375ml
1989 Leoville Las Cases - absolutely phenomenal. I was worried as I've had some duds but it showed with more freshness and fruit than any previous bottle. Fantastic pairing with duck.
1992 Dominus - good but not the best showing based on too much brett. Unfortunately it was overpowering.

A memorable evening with great people.

NV Gruet Blanc de Noirs
NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier
2011 Fess Parker Santa Rita Hills Ashley's Vyd. Chard.
2012 Francois Chidaine Vouvray Sec Les Argiles
2000 Les Tourelles de Longueville (Mag)
2003 Mas de Boislauzon CdP Cuvee du Quet
2004 Clarendon Hills Syrah Liandra
2011 Antica Terra Pinot Noir Botanica

The sparklers were solid. I actually preferred the Gruet. The two whites were very good, with the Vouvray possibly being WOTN. If it wasn't then the Antica Terra probably was. The Les Tourelles was good+ and improved throughout the evening. The CdP was good but like many 2003s didn't have any subtlety to it. The Clarendon Hills was big and disjointed.
Last night

- 2006 Cameron Pinot Noir Abbey Ridge -- ripe cherry and some funk on the nose; ripe cherry, cranberry, anise with mushroomy/earthy notes in the background, silky, long rich finish; too ripe to be Burgundy but hits all the right notes; excellent

I also started with a glass of Ricard Pastis and water, which is intense but a bit sweet for an aperitif, to my taste.

How was this? My last bottle, of many, was gone a long while ago.

Just enjoying it now. It has nice depth to it, and also a touch of that burnt rubber thing, but in a good way. I still have two more after this - waiting for your next "young n' old Beaujolais" dinner. Smile
