I'd recommend Montrachet on a Monday night with $0 corkage, however the least time a group of us went, we felt the tasting menu a bit light. I'd order from the regular menu or speciafically inquire about the tasting menu.

We had an offline at Montparnasse that was very nice and you won't need to bring your stemware with you.

Table d'Hote on East 92nd Street is a fine place also.

For a truly elegant outstanding meal, especially as a visitor to the city, I'd go to Bayard's. It's in the financial district, elegant, corkage is allowed, and the food is outstanding classical French. The polace is quiet with a number of small dining rooms that offer some privacy.
