2013 Rolet Chardonnay Arbois
2013 Marie Courtin Effloresence - love this bottling. Was perfect foil to a well executed but eclectic tasting menu.
2005 Carlisle Two Acres - Lots of smokey meaty mourvedre goodness. Could still age it at least another 5+ years.

2015 Occhipinti SP68 Rosso - a rare sound bottle.

A bit on the riper side, without going too far for my palate. Black fruit with a hint of licorice/tar/garrigue. Definitely not what I would call rustic.
2014 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Martaella Vineyard.

2013 Domaine Nowack, Champagne, La Tuilerie, Extra Brut Chardonnay
2005 Vietti, Barolo, Rocche

The Nowack was outstanding. Not a house I'm familiar with but I intend to be. The Vietti is drinking well. Not sure it will improve much, but I'll hold my other bottle for a few years to see.

With cometspider, Gentleman farmer, Bieds and Festiva last night:
- 1982 Ducru Beaucaillou
- 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou
- 1998 Montrose
- 1995 Léoville Poyferre
- 2000 Lynch Bages
Every wine showed well, and it was fun to follow them all over 3 hours or so.
Enjoyed at St. Anselm in the up and coming Union Market section of NE Washington, DC. Our second offline here, and I'm quite sure it will not be our last. Tremendous steaks and sides. Feels more like a hunting lodge than a steakhouse. Thoughtful wine service with excellent stems and wines decanted into Erlenmeyer flasks with handwritten tags to identify each wine. The servers brought us a complimentary round of Madeira as a thank you for giving them tastes of our wine. A wonderful evening, with a great group of gentlemen.

Was invited to an Hourglass tasting last night. All wines were from the 2017 vintage.
Hourglass Estate Cabernet - great fruit and not overly extracted. Excellent
Hourglass Estate Sauvignon Blanc - very Bordeaux like
Hourglass Blueline Estate Merlot - very similar to Paloma and a very good Merlot
Hourglass Blueline Estate Cabernet - good but not great
Hourglass Blueline Estate Right Bank - if had been served blind I would have said this was a Cheval Blanc from a decent vintage. Excellent
Hourglass Blueline Estate Cabernet 36 - glad to see CA Cabs going back to a more restrained style. Not jammy and an excellent cab.

Dinner last week with DoubleD, waterdr and green wine. One of the most notable wines of the night was 2006 Cayuse God only Knows because it was exceptionally BAD. Started out with a really lovely typical floral Grenache nose, but there was this really horrible bitter metallic aftertaste that just kept lingering long after consumption. It was like there was this solid core of Thallium on the midpalate and a hint of Radon and manganese on the finish. I waited a week to write this note to make sure none of us died from radiation poisoning. Never been a big fan of Cayuse and this one didn't help. At least Cayuse got the name correct. God only knows what the f... was in that bottle.

Last weeek for our 26th Anniverary:
1996 Chateau Leoville Las Cases
1996 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill Champagne
Visting friends over the weekend:
2015 Ridge Zinfandel East Bench
2015 Dirty and Rowdy Mourvedre Skinner Stoney Creek Vineyard
2014 Matthiasson Chardonnay Linda Vista Vineyard
2006 Stolpman Syrah Hilltops
2005 Carlisle Syrah Bennett Valley
2005 Failla Syrah Estate Vineyard
Not a dud in the bunch. Was pleasntly surprised by the restraint in the Matthiasson while still being distinctly a napa chard. The Failla was my first Failla, and it was the best of the bunch of reds. It had a good saline/olive note while the other syrahs were all roast meat (and still very good in their own right). The D&R was all savoury notes without any of the weight. The carlisle blew away a bunch of non-winos who told me they were signing up for the mailing list based on that bottle. Good times in Detroit.

Understated for a GA and not as much brioche as expected. In saying that, it is very well balanced and may just need time to evolve.
All of the champers showed well with the Krug turning heads but the Gimonnet and Hebrart definitely held their own.
The red standouts were the Produttori with tagliolini and white truffles and the GL with Veal cheeks Rossini- best bottle of the GL to date.

I understand. I've been asked that before. Sorry but I'm being selfish here. It takes a decent amount of time as it is to taste a wine, write down my thoughts, later post it to CT and then cross post it to the blog. I participate in 3 wine forum on a daily basis, more beyond that. I have to draw the line somewhere on how many times I want to cross post.

With all of this stinking snow and cold here, we've been drinking more like it's the dead of winter. I didn't realize that until just typing those bottles here.
Popped a few high scoring/low priced Rhônes from the prized '16 vintage:
2016 Lafage Bastide Miraflors
2016 Grand Veneur CdR Les Champauvins
I had much higher hopes for the Bastide Miraflors, it wasn't bad but just not thrilling, not the SQN level of excitement, not close...bad bottle? The Champauvins on the other hand is excellent, sturdy, layered, elegant, flavorful.

2006 Poderi Colla Bussia Dardi le Rose - opened up but not fully, could be vintage showing here. May need more time.
2015 Chamboulé, Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, NTE
New (to me) project of Francois Morissette. FWIW, I read the fruit for this bottling came from the Heitz Vineyard. It is delicious. Pineapple, lemon, honey with good acidity. Not sure what the NTE stands for but I did find the 2016 version is YTE (Your Torment is Endless). Going back for more and I might have to try the Cab Franc and/or Pinot Noir.
1989 Mouton Rothschild; easily the best ‘89 Mouton I have enjoyed thus far.

2017 Rodney Strong cab of some sort
The Cantemerle was still a bit tight but nice. The LB was a tight baby and a little tough. Glad I own some though! Mine will sleep for another decade. The Schrader after four hours of air was singing but needed another 3 years or hours to show best. The especial was fun but still serious and benefited from a good mollydooker shake. The Rodney strong is what you get when you invite a non wine guy to a wine dinner...

Over the past few days:
2017 Burlotto Pelaverga - CORKED
1997 Fontodi Chianti Classico - Just awesome sangiovese. Cherries, leather, marzipan. Still fresh with that dry sweetness you can get in aged sangio. I would love to sneak this into '97 BdM horizontal and watch it clean up.
2016 Brash Higgins ZBO - all the apricots/orange zest & white flowers one should expect out of a skin contact zibibo. not bad, but the value isnt there for me with the occhipinti sp68 ~30% less $$.
2016 TH Wines Viognier/roussanne - lighter, guessing its mostly viognier, acidic and aromatic with a hint of roussanne body. ok.
2015 Benoit Roseau syrah - CORKED
1996 Travaglini Gattinara Riserva - CORKED
2006 Vallana Campi Raudii - at this point, just happy it wasnt corked. Lots of reduction when opened, blew off in 45 min or so, went well with dinner.
I havent had a run of TCA affected bottles like this ever. I couldnt believe it when i decanted the gattinara as the 3rd bottle in 4 days. I left it out, said nothing, wathced MRs. VeV pour a glass and walk off.... stop dead in her tracks, turn back with her nose in the glass, looked at me and said "you gotta be f______ing kinggng me..... did you smell this yet?" I acknowledged it. She walks back cursing like a trucker under breath and poured the decanter down the sink in anger. There was no critical assesment or analysis of the vallana after that. It was binary - corked or not. No TCA? Good. Let's have dinner.

2016 Podere Sapaio Radioso...based on the lack of info I found online, I'm guessing this was a "we have some leftover juice, might as well bottle and sell it" project. For $11.99 at Costco it was excellent.
2001 Pontet Canet - this was half-consumed a couple of weeks ago; put a stopper in it and forgot about it until yesterday. Wow, what an amazing wine. It picked up a lot of weight - very full bodied, with luscious cocoa-dusted dried cherries.
