NV Hush Heath Estate Balfour 1503
2005 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc Oakville

Took a flyer on a bottle of the UK sparkler. It wasn’t bad - but not particularly good either. A little yeast, some lemon and ripe apple, but it was all too simple and sweet. Pass.

The Detert was corked. But the wine beneath it was still so powerful and tasty it almost overrode the damp cardboard. Almost. I drank a large glass. Doubt I’ll finish the rest.

I'm assuming this was Les Beguines as I don't believe he makes any other EB. How was it and did you (or any of the others) happen to notice the LC number on the bottle?

Yes youre right, and the LC number was 14.

I really enjoyed it. Potent earthy, brioche nose. Crisp apple on the palate, long finish, great acidity.

I think most people really liked it as well.

Worst truffle season in years. Price was high - 6 Euros per gram at Coccinella, 60 Euro for 8 grams at della Posta. In 2014 della Posta had a large serving platter PIlED high with orange sized truffles. This year, no platter. In 2014 I gorged on Truffles for 3 days. This trip I had white truffle once, and black truffles once.

On the upside, once I got past the typical regional dishes (Tajarin, Vitello Tonnato, Carne Cruda, Uovo con Fonduta...) with truffles, the extreme diversity, creativity and quality of the cuisine emerged. Truffles has shifted from a main attraction for me to a 'nice to have' when they are there... Leave the regional dishes for amuse bouche or appetizers and an incredible world of gastronomic adventure opens up.

6 of us and 11 bottles, with some gf's arriving at the end...no wonder I was a little slow on Saturday!

Cos was my fave red of the night, from what I recall, but all reds showed well. Batard wasn't premoxed but it was advanced, luckily I had the CC as a backup.

A big +1
2007 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile

Someone posted a tasting note on CT a few weeks ago which I didn't read until this morning - but it exactly reflects my take on it:

"Tastes just off-dry with good balancing acid but the fruit is very muted and you have to really lean in to get anything on the nose and palate. Perhaps this will become interesting with age and oxidation, perhaps the fruit is shut down, but at any rate this is a bit boring right now."

VinCentric, you may have tasted more nebbiolo wines in 8 days than I have in my life.

Last Monday, at my first visit to Bern's in Tampa:

1973 Parducci Petite Sirah
1975 Souverain Zinfandel

Both by the glass for about $10. Not many places where you can get wines like that by the glass.

.

Sounds like a great trip. Did you stay in Nino's (Felicin) apartments? That view of the alps from the terrace is breathtaking.

I like interesting old wines that most people would say are over the hill. So yes, I liked them, especially considering they were under $5 on release. My sister, who does not drink wine, and had Coca-Cola with her steak, took one whiff, crinkled her nose and said "yuck!"

Yes, and this time we were blessed with clear skies and September weather the whole time! We had breakfast and a couple of lunches in the apartment with the door wide open, sometimes sitting on the balcony in short sleeves. I wore short sleeves most of the trip and didn't need a jacket at times. Views were stunning everywhere. The 2.5 hr lunch on the terrace overlooking the piazza at Albergo Alberto in Serralunga with a clear view of Mt. Viso was incredible. This was definitely not what one would expect for November. On my last trip it rained the whole time...
