Has any ever gone to see the Aurora Borealis?  If so, where?

And more importantly, how exciting / thrilling / inspiring is it to see them?

Mrs. Rothko wants to go see them.  If you travel all the way somewhere north, where it is very cold, is it really worth the trip?  Because you aren't guaranteed lights on any particular night, do you go for multiple nights to ensure you'll see them?  If you see them on the first night, is it worth staying around for multiple nights afterwards?

Anyone have advice on going to see the Northern Lights?

We went to Iceland in October a few years ago.  The first thing they tell you when you get there is that if you come to see the Northern Lights, you will probably be disappointed.  I agree w/ that sentiment.  Seeing Iceland was fun and really unique. We saw glimpses of the northern lights, and nothing that looked like what we'd seen in pictures.  Ironically, our photos of them came out better than what I remember seeing.  But like I said earlier, it's best to plan to see Iceland (can't speak towards Lapland) and hopefully catch the Northern Lights, versus trying to see them and getting disappointed when the weather doesn't cooperate.
