Ozo made a number of great films in his short 60 years. My favorite is the crushing Tokyo Story. For Kurosawa it was almost always the big canvas movies. For Ozo it was more often about the lives and struggles of everyday people.
The Green Book... The movie will get some Oscar nominations. Mahershala Ali is a certainty to get a nomination for best actor. He is, really, really good in the movie. Totally believable. Viggo Mortensen may well get a nomination for best supporting actor. Linda Cardellini is very good as well. It's a good story and true. Don't expect special effects. You learn something by going to see it. The movie itself will not win an Oscar for best movie. It's not worthy of that. But the acting is quite good.

Very odd film, which is not surprising given the Director. But we thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of laughs, a bit educational, visually stunning, with a few dashes of risque thrown in for good measure!

Crazy Rich Asians - was ok, somewhat entertaining

Crazy Rich Asians - Lots of problems with this film. (Eg. Written by someone who probably knows a lot about rich Asians but not nearly enough about economics to write a believable econ professor. Yet, the star is meant to be an econ professor.) Yet overall it was a lovely way to pass the time on a flight. Awkwafina was the best part of the film by a lot. Recommended for a mindless plane ride. B-
Ant-Man and the Wasp - Also on a plane. Quintessential mindless fun. There are some parts that try to get too serious. Still, it works well. Great plane material. B-/B
The Meg - I mean... it was in focus. It was fine for a plane. But only for that. Either too rediculous or else not rediculous enough. C-/C
Elf - I hadn’t seen it in years and I forgot how great this film is. Wonderful. B+

Terrific. Emotionally engaging, funny, thoughtful and well paced. Not particularly profound, but it's highly entertaining. The performances from Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen are note-perfect.
The Old Man and The Gun
It has an odd rhythm to it. It's slow and flat at times, and it's emotionally detached. Redford and Spacek are charming, but the movie didn't do it for me.

I agree with your thoughts on Green Book. My wife and I really enjoyed it. Both Ali and Mortensen give great performances, beautifully contrasted against each other. Mortensen's physical transformation was particularly impressive. My wife didn't recognize him until well into the movie.
Bel Canto..... stars Julliane Moore. The worst lip-syncing in the history of the movies. Quite irritating. If you like opera this is a really good movie to avoid.
Vice
One of the most original and creative examples of story-telling I've seen at the movies. Very clever and impressive film-making. That said, it dragged on and on - I was bored throughout almost all of its two hours - and I'm more of a political junkie that just about anyone I know! Like watching a great artist use innovative techniques to create a masterpiece that nonetheless leaves you cold.

BTW I'm aware of the "Hollywood white saviour" criticism of the movie, as well as the complaints of Don Shirley's family that the film is full of falsehoods about the relationship between Shirley and Vallelonga. When I said it wasn't a profound film, I was referring to its glossy and simplistic take on racism. But the film didn't pretend to be more than what it was.

It’s a Spike Lee joint. If you were looking for nuance you would have been disappointed. But I absolutely loved it. It looks at a lot of what Do The Right Thing examines; for example, the choice between violent rebellion and trying to change society through the channels you are ‘supposed to’. Obviously that choice that he is looking at, if you’ve seen either film, is far more complicated and is about identity as much as anything. The acting is top notch across the board. I wasn’t familiar with a lot of the actors who had fairly serious roles, but they were uniformly excellent. Of the famous ones, of course Adam Driver and Topher Grace were excellent. Cameos by Alec Baldwin make anything better. And John David Washington, the star, was brilliant. (Side note: Denzel’s son.). The film is funny at times and angry pretty much all the time but it wasn’t to the detriment of the art. My guess is there is a film on Netflix I’m going to like more (Roma). But as of now, this is my favorite film of 2018. A-

Excellent. Not a happy story, but then it is Fassbinder.

No mention of Steve Buscemi's brother? FKG and I enjoyed this when we saw it. While having a pre-movie cocktail across the street from the theatre a rednecky couple comes in to the bar pronouncing it the worst movie they ever saw and it was definitely not what they expected - while FKG, the bartender and I all looked at each other and tried to supress grins/smirks

I loved Buscemi’s brother! I kept on thinking that he reminded me of Buscemi but it wasn’t him. I didn’t know it was his brother. He was great.
