We saw Youth last night, and loved it.

I've really liked Michael Caine since I saw him in Alfie many, many years ago; I think last night I saw him in what might be his best role yet. The dialogue was interesting, and left us thinking about, and discussing, the vagaries of old age, and the reflections of past loves. The film also contains beautiful cinematography with some memorable scenes.

On the other hand, my daughter thought it said nothing and went nowhere, but then, she suffers from youth. It's a good thing that there's a lot of different movies available for viewing. Smile
Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.

I was never a Nirvana fan nor did I think KC was the genius that a lot of others did, but watching this reminded me how fast that they got really huge. As a film it is very interesting to me. I like the different arrangements of Nirvana songs in the soundtrack.

It also reinforced what a c**t I think his wife was and is, and what a coward he was for offing himself and leaving his daughter to be cared for by that skank.

Sea, I hope you have seen The Great Beauty.
The past 5 days I watched:
Star Wars (I think it's the best one since Empire Strikes Back and a great movie for the kids, too)
The Revenant
Spotlight
Big Short
The Illusionist

Revenant, Straight Outta Compton, Spotlight and Sicario are my favorite 2015 films so far. I need to see about 1/2 dozen great looking ones while they're still in the theater.

Youth

My mom, who sees everything, says she's the only one she knows who liked it.

Odd... Everyone we have talked to liked it.

She has to get a new set of friends.

I was going to suggest that... Wink
From the LA Times:

The problem with Star Wars

He gets it, including this bit which I've always thought about the Lucas/Spielberg money machine:
quote:
It's commonly said that the original "Star Wars" changed Hollywood, and that's true. But it didn't change the movies the way "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967), "Chinatown" (1974) and "Taxi Driver" (1976) did, by applying creative craftsmanship to raw, adult subject matter...

It is the chink in what many of us think of as "Hollywood's" greatest decade, the 70s, with the blockbusterizing of the film industry. We are thrown Oscar-bait at the end of each year, and they are dutifully seen by a small number of "adult" theater-goers, but they are only an afterthought in the mega-studios' eyes. If I believed in the current three letter shorthand for evil corporations, I'd call it, "Big Filmmaking."

How were you able to see The Revenant? I don't think it's coming out here until mid-January. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it does arrive.

All over major cities. See what happens when you live in the hinterlands?

I actually watched it 2x with an Academy screener friend at their house. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the theater on the big screen (I'm a bit in the sticks as well), the cinematography is amazing. Without giving any spoilers, IMO the movie blew away the book (good telling of the story, but I didn't like Punke's writing style). I thought DiCaprio's trademark high pitched squealing didn't fit what I imagined in the Hugh Glass character, no big deal I suppose.
I watched Spotlight again last night at the theater- awesome film.
