Star Wars: Episode VII with my son.
Abrams did a hellava lot better with this than he did with Star Trek. Of course, it helps that this was just a continuation and not an entire reboot.
Can you imagine? "Ok, yeah, let's cast Zac Efron as the new Luke Skywalker, Harvey Keitel as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Rock will be the new Han Solo. Darth Vader? Hmmm. Is Dick Cheney available?"
Take Shelter
WTF??? Jessica Chastain should be more discriminating in the scripts she accepts.

Brooklyn:
Saiorse Ronan plays the female lead. Her acting is terrific, and she has the most expressive and beautiful eyes. In general the acting is fabulous, the story is wonderful.
I really recommend this. No special effects. Just great writing, acting and a story that makes sense.
There will be some awards here.

Pulp Fiction- strange and transfixing. One of a kind

First time?!
Les Cousins--70pts.
Sorry W+A I just don't get this film. First there are no likable characters. Now I can deal with this, see Blood Simple. But there it's deliberate. I think we're suppose to like, or even root for, Charles. But I can't muster any empathy for him. When these people are playing carelessly with guns, or throwing trash on the ground or in the Seine, they're figuring the best thing to do after a night of hard partying and drinking is to go out for a drive. The ending really comes out of nowhere and seems tacked on to give some sort of resolution. Truffaut made this film much better three years later with Jules and Jim.
Interesting note: A famous passage from Wagner's Tristan & Isolde is used at the end. Bernard Herrmann had adapted that passage a year earlier for the Vertigo sequence with Stewart and Novak in the hotel room.

You are an outlier on this one, OM.

Have you seen Les Biches, and if so, thoughts?
I also thought you would have worked The 400 Blows into your review.

Not seen Les Biches. Forgot to mention how bad I thought the soundtrack (except for the classical) was. Hollywood style leanings that never fit the picture.
Gone Girl
I actually didn't hate the ending as much as most as I thought it just really showed how deeply disturbed she was and how disturbed he was in his own way. That being said I thought the entire movie was pretty bad.

Anyone seen The Danish Girl or Carol yet? Trying to make up my mind for a matinee tomorrow.
World Trade Center- overly long, predictable, very skippable
Terminator Genisys
Time warp mash up of the other Terminator movies. Can't say I cared for it much but the Blue Ray was sitting there so eh....

No, but go see Carol between those two. However, if Trumbo is still playing go see that.

Rob, I have only seen Carol, and it was excellent. A solid B IMHO.
I would love to hear your opinion if you see either...
Ode to My Father
Really liked it. Some tear producing scenes towards the end of the movie.

Beyond the Lights
Decent. Worth the stream on Netflix.

Black Moon
Had never even heard of it before, but figured if directed by Louis Malle, what could go wrong? Lots. Pretentious hippie, art fag, piece of crap.
Seven Days in May
Very good. Got me wondering how old Kirk Douglas is. Turned 99 a couple of weeks ago.

There is a new Star Wars movie?
Run All Night- loved it. I'm a sucker for almost everything with Liam Neeson or Ed Harris in it. This had both

I'm with you there Board-O. Two of my favorites.
Enjoyed Scrooged this evening while preparing for Christmas Eve brunch tomorrow.

The Bad Sleep Well
Pretty good, but a little melodramatic at times.

Big Short - Excellent flick, very entertaining.
Hateful 8 - Long and talky, really self-indulgent...for QT fans only.
Star Wars - Dull and uneventful...like they took the first Star Wars and supersized it, villains are lame...best scenes involve Harrison Ford.

As those in the industry know the 2015 winner of the Perfect Viewing in Film and TV award was announced last night. I am proud to announce I was given the Sole Winner award (as opposed to the Multiple Winner award.)
Fire in the Sky- nah

Hmmmm...I had high hopes for this one.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Passable Disney tripe.
Winter's Tale
Second viewing. Wife hadn't seen it yet. Too bad I was too lazy to leave the room. Should have. Still not that good.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Still funny but I should have went to bed instead and left it with my youngest son to watch again.

You may love it...movie opinions are about as meaningless as music reviews, or wine reviews for that matter

Not if you find critics whose opinions you respect or agree with.
Spotlight-87 pts.
Very nice ensemble piece that highlights a very important topic.
Soap box side note: It also shows what a joke LA's politicians, and the LA Times, were during their own priest scandals. There'd be the mayor, police chief and other high ranking officials attending events with LA's own enabler of child rapes--Cardinal Mahony. The Times would also approach him with kid gloves in the paper. One of the true low points in LA's newspaper history.

Trumbo first (an eye-opener for today's young people ["young" meaning 20 years or more less than us]), then Spotlight.
I just returned from viewing The Force Awakens. Although I have been an avid fan of the Star Wars universe, I wasn't terribly thrilled with this one.
