MOVIES: What are you watching?

Over the last several months:

Dark Night Rises- Went too big, couldn't get back from my break from suspension of disbelief.

Total Recall- not bad, even better than the first one (haha) and more true to the book I believe. Good set designs (whether digital or not).

Boardwalk Empire (Season 2)- I have gotten to like this.

The Hobbit- Still love what they do with these movies, but this one seems a bit long. Don't mind it all that much as it is a good exercise in letting the story come to you. We have gotten so used to fast paced immediate gratification in movies.

Moonrise Kingdom- Bill Murray and a very good cast make this one work.

American Horror Story (Season 1)- disturbing but done well for the genre.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- Funny well acted movie and a very good depiction of India through western eyes, IMO.

Wallander (Series 3)- All 3 series have been very good in this Branagh/BBC work. The Sherlock Holmes series' are also very good BBC productions.
Skyfall
The Life of Pi
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
The Hobbit [in IMAX 3D which made a long film seem shorter]

Enjoyed them all with 'Marigold' and 'Salmon Fishing' the most relaxing, the Hobbit the most technically stimulating, 'Pi' the most exotic and thought-provoking and Skyfall another [good] Bond film.

My wife doesn't like Daniel Craig as Bond while I find him the most believable licensed killer of the 6 [Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan, Craig. I don't count David Niven in the spoof Casino Royale] who have played the part in the major films.

Total Recall (2012)

All on flight back from Europe.

Where did you go? How did the movie compare with Ahnold original?

Switzerland.

It didn't compare to the original. Colin Ferrell isn't Arnold, and while it tried to play to the "Is it real or just going on at Rekall?" bit, it didn't do it convincingly. Still, Kate Beckinsale looked good as she always does, so that helped ease the pain somewhat.

You went to Switzerland and didn't boast mention it?

What in the hell is wrong with you? Wink

Pretty easy. I went to Argentina and never really mentioned it beforehand. Some around here might find this incredible to believe but you don't have to post everything on the Internet. Trust me, you don't have post it on the Internet for me to believe you're eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, watching movies, reading books and wearing clothes daily. Big Grin

Saw The Hobbit tonight. Great fun.

I don't think we'd been to the theatre for a movie since Star Trek. The Lone Ranger might get me back.

Saw it as well this week. I also enjoyed it. I don't understand all the complaints.
Django Unchained

A very very good straightforward stylized and wry western set against slavery; with a third act that takes a hard turn to something-else-I-have-no-idea-what. But it loses its way. Some great performances. Some great stuff, but not up to Tarantino's best. B+/A-

I guess it depends how much you deduct for the third act. My rating is basically as if the last forty minutes never happened Smile

Without giving anything away, there is a moment in the third act he could have cut his loses. It would have meant completely self-refrencing (which he did anyway) and breaking time-space (which I'm never ok with) but it actually could have worked.
