Have you seen Tropic Thunder? I run hot (well, warm) and cold on Cruise. (Professionally. Personally think he is an idiot.) If you've not, I gotta say... it isn't really a typical role for him. In fact, it is just about the opposite. Even if you don't like him, it might still be worth seeing him do this.

I was never a big fan of Cruise. I’ve enjoyed some of his movies no doubt, but I feel like he basically plays the same character no matter what the story line. I would Mr. Pitt has much more range than Mr. Cruise.

I believe that you must differentiate between a Movie Star and an Actor. There are a multitude of Movie Stars that possess limited acting ability (i.e. Ben Affleck). I believe that Cruise falls into that category. When he is on the screen I do not believe that he is anything other than Tom Cruise. And when he is paired with another actor that can act, the difference is glaring.
Just my opinion.

I absolutely and completely agree! I could not have said it better myself.
While there are Movie Stars that can indeed act, Cruise is not one of them.

Wow, didn't realize there was so much Cruise dislike. I'm not saying he's Depp, or Hoffman (either PS or D), or Daniel Day Lewis. But, I'd hardly call his performances in War of the Worlds, Vanilla Sky, or The Color of Money pathetic.

I used to say the same about Nicholson until I watched About Schmidt. He actually can play against type brilliantly.
As for Cruise, I did enjoy his cameo in the third Austin Powers movie, along with Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito.

I think he has been a very good movie star in certain roles that called for limited acting. Specifically: Risky Business, Top Gun, and A Few Good Men. Additionally, he has shown himself to be a good actor in movies such as Magnolia and Collateral. There are very few movie stars who are also such good actors that you forget who you are watching when seeing one of their movies. And Tom Cruise *certainly* does not fall into this category. But I enjoy some of his earlier work for what it is, and I think he has shown serious acting talent from time to time, though not consistently nor recently. As a person, I thinkwe can all agree he is an egomaniac of the highest order, and, frankly, he strikes me as a bit of a jerk.

I have to preface this with: I'm Jewish, my ex was the daughter of immigrants from Eastern Europe and Iraq, her step family was Israeli, I have a few close Arab and Persian friends. Soooo... This movie probably hit closer to home for me than for most, allowing me to appreciate the humor more. That being said, I enjoyed it. I laughed out loud several times, though they were not the type of laughs that make you feel good about yourself. Deffinitely glad I skipped it in the theatres, but also had fun. Good *mindless* comedy, but not the type of movie one has to see... just the type of movie that is worth seeing if it is available and you want to watch a mindless comedy.

My wife has never seen Godfather 2 or 3 so we are going to start tonight with the original and do 2 and 3 over the weekend.
Why bother with Godfather 3? I would watch 1 and 2 back to back and pretend 3 never existed. As I have been trying to do since I first saw in the theatres and had to suffer through the dumb plot, Pacino mailing it in and Sofia's horrible acting. Other than the Pacino they keep dragging me back in line, there is no redeeming feature to this movie.
While his recent actions have not helped his overall popularity, I don’t think this opinion of his acting is anything new. He just doesn’t have the range IMO. I actually passed him in a restaurant in LA when I was in college. They always say actors are smaller than you think and at least in his case, it’s very true. He’s just a little guy. Watched the commentary at your reccomendation. What I found so funny about it was their reaction every time Emmanuelle Chriqui (who, imo, is just about the most beautiful young woman in the world) was on the screen. It was as if they had never met her and they all started just vocalizing what I was thinking.
