In any event, a great movie. It's almost embarrasing to sense the sexual tension that Natalie Portman puts out (no pun intended) in that movie. She was like 12 years old; her first role, I believe.

Jean Reno does a great job, if a bit typecast. Oldman just shines in every scene he is in.

Natalie has been at her best in sexual roles. Closer was her best adult role, imo. and this her best child role. One wonders what her parents must have thought when they allowed her to take on this role... or even if she fully understood everything she was doing. (she must have?) Yes, it is creepy. Very. But that is part of what makes the movie great, I think. You sense the sexual tension and you are uncomfortable and disturbed; but at the same time, you don't think of Leon as a pedophile, and there is a realistic quality to it that is... for lack of a better word, intriguing.
The Orphanage - Really good movie. That guy does not write happy endings though.

Wolverine - Pretty cool, the dialogue suffers when the writers throw comic book geeks a bone, but it is all in good fun. Overall I think they did a good job of making ridiculous comic books into something adults can watch and enjoy.

Dance Flick - Not so good. Best Wayans Bros movie was Im Gonna Git You Sucka and Scary Movie was funny way back when. It had a few funny moments not sure it compares. Although I was a lot younger when I saw those other two movies and wonder what I would think now.

I just saw the matinee of "Whip It", staring Ellen Page, or maybe that's "Juno does Roller Derby"! Cool

IMO, this film has been over-rated by the critics, with many critics rating "Whip It" 3 1/2 stars! I thought it was Frown Frown stars, or maybe even 2 1/2 if generous! IMO, it's a rental, or even better, an HBO viewing!

Curious, did you see it with anyone? If so, what were their approx. ages and what did they think?

indybob

No, I went to the afternoon matinee by myself.

Also, there were very few in the theatre, and all appeared to be 35+. "Whip It" is getting some outstanding reviews, but I still think it's a rental! And yes, perhaps the age group 14-25 will enjoy this movie more than I! However, I agree that Juno was a terrific movie and could be enjoyed by all ages.

"Bram Stoker's Dracula." IMO, an amazing piece of work by Oldman.

Agreed. He and Jean Reno, along with a young Natalie Portman, were outstanding in "The Professional."

Embarrassed to admit that I have yet to see "The Professional," though it is now at the top of my must-see-soon list. Oldman, Reno (who is a wonderful actor), and Portman together? Has to be good!

I think Leon is the title of the original French version, which was amended for export, and became The Professional. (I was just reading about this in an article regarding the upcoming blu-ray release being The Professional, and not Leon)

An absolute must-see...

Good point latour67. If I didn't have a roller derby connection (my wife is a skater), I would have certainly rated it lower as you did. The night I saw it, the theater was 3/4 full, with two derby leagues in attendance. It was pretty rowdy, a good time for sure.

Um, check out my favorite movies on my Facebook profile. Wink

But... we can say it was in honor of your 5000th post. Cool

This was a Horror, dark comedy, by Diablo Cody, who also wrote Juno, (Ellen Page)!

Fox is the eye candy, Seyfried is the actress. A surprisingly good movie with good performances and clever dialogue ***!

I'm actually planning on seeing this one with the wife. (note to self: start practicing the line "nah, she's kinda fugly." with a straight face)

Mel Brooks' most under-rated movie, imo.

LMAO funny.

I sure miss Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn. Frown

Agree...Leachman is also funny in this movie.

On a side note, I watched Thomas Crown Affair circa 1999 on the plane today. Cool

Taking my son to the Harry Potter movie at the $2 theatre here in Hopkins tomorrow. Second run theatre.

Doing the same tomorrow. Our second-run theater is $3, but buy a $2 large pop and a $4 large popcorn (with real melted butter), they will give you free refills. Big Grin
Turns out to be a really cheap outing for a family of 4.

I think my pulse just quickened. Eek
Watched this as well this week. I have a hard time watching most movies more than once, but this is an exception. Every time it’s on I can’t change the channel. Cool

Ha... I have seen BOTH several times.
I watched Gran Torino and Tropic Thunder on the way to & from Arizona. Both were very enjoyable. I found GT to be a bit rough at the beginning - Clint's character took some getting used to. TT was generally enjoyable with some very funny moments - I thought Jack Black was the best in it (and found the Tom Cruise parts not nearly as funny as others had told me).
