I believe it is the best Marlowe and yet it's not very faithful to the book. Of note: If you get the right DVD it will contain two versions of the movie. The original was never released in the US and was only shown as one of many movies projected for GIs during WWII. Bacall's agent saw it and suggested reshoots playing up Bacall's sex appeal and the romance between her and Bogart. Two quick examples of the difference is in the original version Bacall wears a fishnet type veil on one scene deemphasizing her face. Also the double entendre loaded horse riding discussion was not in the original version.

Sidenote, the incredibly appealing Martha Vicker, who plays Bacall's sister, had her scenes reduced even in the original to keep the attention on Bacall.

Thanks for the reminder TOM. I checked, and my copy has both versions. Will put them both in the cue.
Our Souls At Night
Meh. Nice to see Redford and Fonda together again, but the whole thing was painfully contrived and falls flat. It would have made a decent play.

At one point while watching it I was so bored I recast it in my mind with Frances McDormand and Paul Giamatti and imagined how they would have played it. It was a much better movie.

The Post
Very good, and Spielberg mostly avoided hitting us over the head with the obvious messages... until near the end when he just couldn't help himself. One example: the scene with Streep walking down the steps of the Supreme Court building with dozens of women lined up, looking up at her with wide-eyed reverence like they just wanted to touch the hem of her garment, was way over the top.
Cannery Row

Having recently read the book I thought I'd check out the 1982 film. Well I suppose it is loosely based on the book, but also on the sequel, Sweet Thursday, which I wasn't even aware existed. The cinematography was good, thanks to Sven Nykvist, but the rest of it not so.

XTC: This is Pop

Documentary about one of my favourite bands. Definitely worthwhile if you like their music.

One of my top five favourite bands. I didn't know about this doc, so thanks for the tip. I'll track it down.

Waste of time.

Watched it as well, as part of my two week experiment with Moviepass...don't know about you, but I sorta knew it was going to be a waste of time beforehand!

If you're wondering why I dumped Moviepass, it was because they wouldn't let me see movies at AMC Century City anymore...fortunately, Costco (where I bought the pass..still available) has the best return policy in retail. FWIW, if I had theaters in my area that took Moviepass, I would sign up in a New York minute!
