Passengers
Not good. I actually think it could have been a good movie if it had embraced the moral issue it brought up and not made the easy and formuliac choices it did. Oh well, at least Jennifer Lawrence looked good in a bathing suit.
Incredibly moving documentary about a Platoon of US Soldiers who apparently set up and execute civilians in Afghanistan.
Along the lines of Platoon, wherein those who wanted or attempted to speak out are dealt with by their superiors, violently.
Highly recommended.

Fury
Surprised at how bad this movie is.

Watched The Hitman's Bodyguard and Going in Style over the weekend. Laughed several times through the former at the banter between the characters portrayed by Reynolds and Jackson, and really enjoyed the latter due mainly to the three lead actors, each of which are among my favorites.

And it had a real Tiger tank in it. Should have been much better.

Really, eh?
The production values were high, they just wrote a very silly script.
The final battle scene was on par with the Battle of Endor in terms of ridiculousness.
Yes, they were able to use to one and only existing operational Tiger tank for the movie. No replica or mock up. The first time since the 1950's that you are seeing a real Tiger tank rolling along in a field.
Oh, and what was wrong with the Battle of Endor?

I really felt the Empire ignored too many of the classic tactics for fighting a tribe of primitive teddy bears in a forest setting. Unbelievably poor military leadership.

I think it was the straw that broke the camel's back for The Old Man.
Just saw DUNKIRK with the family and it definitively is a movie you would want to see in an IMAX theatre.
The sound editing is fantastic and Zimmer's music is worth getting an Oscar.
I enjoyed the lack of gory which is so prevalent in war movies these days. Good entertainment.

Logan Lucky: *** Tightly directed, well-told heist tale in the vein of the Oceans 11-12-13 franchise. Recommended.
A friend recommended this to us. He thought it was very funny. We were bored out of our minds.
Chacun a son gout, as they say.
Saw Dunkirk last night.
Wife hated it, I thought it was great.

I read the book a long time ago but had never seen the movie. Very good.

Young Frankenstein - found it on Netflix. Hilarious as always.

Funny, I just rewatched Blazing Saddles for the first time in maybe a decade. Still a sometimes amusing, sometimes outrageously funny film that Brooks simply did not know how to end.

My GF was in Prague last year with a friend, and they saw a sign on the ceiling in an old church. My GF blurted out, "Fronkensteen!" Her friend tried correcting her and said, "It's pronounced Frankenstein." Apparently she's never seen the movie.

Every time I see the movie while changing channels I always stop to watch for at least a few minutes.

Eraserhead
David Lynch is more whacked than Guy Maddin. Not by much though.

Hmmmm. Good question. I hadn't seen it since I first saw it in college. Still weird after all these years.
Lynch has made some other very weird films (Blue Velvet). David Cronenberg made plenty including Videodrome and Naked Lunch. Fellini's Satyricon or Amarcord. Black Moon by Louis Malle. Gummo by Harmony Korine.
War for the Planet of the Apes
Meh. Disappointing. They managed to tie a few ends together to set the story up for the arrival of Taylor & crew, but I thought it was stretched. They should stop now. Otherwise Nova will be too old.

Dunkirk.
I thought it was excellent, my 15 yo son did not like it.

Montenegro is my favourite weird film.
Montenegro, weird? Black comedy but not weird.

I love Videodrome! Great performances by James Woods, Deborah Harry (What a shame she had to get old!), and supporting cast. Expertly directed to control the tone and mood of the film! That and Blood Simple are two of the finest mood movies I've ever seen. Exponential film noire for me.

Agree re: Videodrome. Naked Lunch was interesting but very bizzare. Blue Velvet - creepy, dark, sick, making me wonder what the point of it was, beyond gratuitousness.
I didn't like Blue Velvet at all. Never saw Naked Lunch.
Pan's Labyrinth. Been a while, but still enjoyable.

"Little damn things, smaller than my fist. But they're new!"
That line still cracks me up. Eraserhead is one of the funniest films I've seen. Mel Brooks loved it so much that he hired Lynch to direct The Elephant Man.
One thing I learned in the late 70s: Eraserhead is not an ideal activity for a first date.
Oklahoma City
discussion of the bombing on Oklahoma City, including the events leading up to it (Ruby Ridge, Waco, Texas).
Chilling, includes photos of McVeigh at Waco and some rather candid commentary from him while awaiting his death sentence.

I was at the National Memorial a week ago. Really puts faces to the tragedy.
An Eye for Beauty
Easily the worse film from Denys Arcand I have ever viewed.
This should have been a satire but even that could not have saved this failure. Arcand did as always takes his unflattering shots at Canadian healthcare in this film. If for some odd reason you must watch this film, do it with the sound on mute and enjoy the cinematography.

Hands Across the Table
Lombard and MacMurray are very funny in it.
American Pastoral
Meh. I read the book a long time ago, but did not remember the story, which means to me that both book and film are forgettable melodrama. Jennifer Connelly still looks good though.

I haven't seen his most recent but other than Les Invasions Barbares what other of his films took shots at our healthcare system? I've never noticed that as a repetitive theme in his films.
Not a theme but often interweaving the negative side which he did again in this film.
I saw him interviewed once and he really seems to focus on the healthcare in Quebec specifically which he is highly critical of.
