I can't name a great movie by anybody who was on SNL or SCTV. Though some of Christopher Guest's movies, often with SCTV people, are fun.

Define a "Great" movie. I would say some of Harold Ramis' works would be considered "Great" especially Groundhog day. that's just at the top of the heap.

Agree with Groundhog Day - great flick.

And come-on . . . Ghost Busters (the original). Wouldn't call it great, but what a fun family flick

Re: Christopher Guest, I think many of his movies are spectacular. Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show were great IMO. Could put Spinal Tap in the mix as well, but while I continue to enjoy Spinal Tap references, it's not a movie I can watch over and over again

Can't believe I forgot the one that's right near my top of greatest comedies and also an excellent movies.

Yes, I'd put This Is Spinal Tap up there, but isn't the only person who appeared on SNL Harry Shearer? But it qualifies.

In no way can I put Ghostbusters, Caddy Shack or Trading Places in my top 500.

Though your list does sum up my contention that not many great movies have been made by this large number of talented people.

Chaplin (Robert Downey Jr. and Dan Ackyroyd)
Stranger Than Fiction (Will Ferrell)
Elf (Will Ferrell)
Nebraska (Will Forte)
The Skeleton Twins (Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader)
The Royal Tenenbaums (Bill Murray)

Former 15 and sunny, thanks for the comprehensive list.

Clearly some very good movies listed, but I would argue only one truly great movie that will stand the test of time as being a classic worthy of conversation decades from now.

Ghostbusters was made in 1984, aka 3 decades ago. I and many others talk about it all the time.

Winning!! Banana Winner

BTW, what are your thoughts on Montenegro, one of my all-time favourites?

Decades from now. Razz

Montenegro, Swedish film?

Not quite. Thanks for playing, we have some wonderful parting gifts for you.

Curious which film you are referring to.

There may be generational issues at play, but amongst my peers, pretty much all would immediately assume you're speaking of The Princess Bride, which I suspect is not the case. I also think Animal House isn't going anywhere.

Sunny, I didn't realize RDJ was ever on SNL.

Tropic Thunder is a very funny film worthy of "Honorable Mention" in my view; and The Avengers is just about the best comic book film ever.

Also, I didn't know about Randy.

Also, forgot that Bill Hader was in Superbad -- which I think is an excellent modern comedy.

Montenegro, Swedish film?

Shot in Sweden with Swedish and Yugoslav actors and about something that happened in Sweden but with a Yugoslav Director, an American star, and in English.

I'm a little surprised you don't know it, I'd have thought it was right up your alley!

I do recall seeing it in the '80's. (?)

I will revisit the movie soon. Thanks for recommendation.

Hint: it was on your list in a way too low position.

I wasn't asked, but when I saw it (30+ years ago) I remember wishing it was better.

It is certainly an odd film, but hilarious in places, bittersweet if not downright tragic in others, and very original.

I'd have to say that you're completely right about 2 of them.

Don't bother asking him which two, he'll never tell! Bang

I'll stick with my original assessment.

Ha, you think so Big Grin
Last night:
A Most Wanted Man Very interesting film, if ultimately somewhat unsatisfying. Very European in tone and style. If I didn't know better, I would have thought Hoffman was a German/European actor in an English language film. I think this may have been his best performance, which makes the circumstances of his death even more ridiculously tragic.
(Also, I had to look up who played CIA agent Martha Sullivan. She looked so familiar...wha?? Princess Buttercup???)

A Million Ways to Die in the West I laughed through most of it, in spite of myself. There were a couple of lines and gags I'll probably never get out of my head.

Winetarelli, all are my generation for sure.

Groundhog Day will endure and is already a subject of study at Chapman and other universities. A brilliant modern day fable in so many ways.
