I am convinced that once all three movies have been released, someone will be able to chop them down to a single, 3 hour movie, that will probably be pretty good.

Just take out all the video-game antics like going down rapids in a barrel while shooting orcs, floating on a river of gold while being chased by a dragon, etc...

When you (I think) mentioned this last year I wrote, "Yes, my suggestion was Jackson make a new kind of director's cut when it comes out on DVD--instead of adding scenes best left on the editing room floor, he cuts off 7.5 hours."

I stopped watching about 40 minutes into the first one and haven't looked back. Perhaps, like with some of the Star Wars "earlier" episodes some fans might fix this mess.

Background is that with winter coming, my wife and I switch to more indoor activities in the evening, and my wife has actioned me to "find some good movies to watch... but not stuff from 10 years ago!"

In rough descending order:

12 Years a Slave
<jump>
Her
Midnight in Paris
The Descendants
Moonrise Kingdom

<jump>
The Wolf of Wallstreet
<jump>
Argo
American Hustle
Silver Linings Playbook
Lincoln
The Avengers
Zero Dark Thirty

Honorable comedy mention for: 21 Jump Street

Her
Upstream Color
Three Brit Marling films, all with flaws and all interesting: The Sound of My Voice, Another Earth and The East
Guy Madden's most difficult film: Keyhole.

I can't think of anything else interesting in the 2010's though I'm sure I missed one or two others.

Not sure of your style, and with the current ebb in cinema the last few years is somewhat limiting, but a few that came to mind are...

Searching for Sugar Man
Life Itself
Dallas Buyers Club
Winter's Bone
Tim's Vermeer
The Hunt
The Intouchables
A Simple Life
The Great Beauty
Mud
Boyhood

I'm sure I will think of others.

I was going to add Tim's Vermeer if just for it's headshake inducing unbelievableness. I would have added Winter's Bone but it was released 3 years and a month ago so it disqualified. Alright I guess I can add it. I will check out others are you list.

You have not yet watched Life Itself?

This has your name all over it... Cinema + Chicago. Wink
Babette's Feast. Danish movie.
Boring until the meal at the end, which consisted of "Potage à la Tortue" (turtle soup) served with Amontillado ; "Blinis Demidoff" (buckwheat cakes with caviar and sour cream) served with 1860 Veuve Cliquot; "Cailles en Sarcophage" (quail in puff pastry shell with foie gras and truffle sauce) served with Clos de Vougeot ; an Endive Salad; "Savarin au Rhum avec des Figues et Fruit Glacée" (rum sponge cake with figs and candied cherries) served with more Champagne; assorted cheeses and fruits served with Sauterne; and coffee with Louis XIII de Rémy Martin cognac.

Me too.

As much as I may think they are a pale shadow compared to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I will be awaiting the last last Hobbit movie.

I held it together for most of the movie. Lost it at the end. Incredibly sad although predictable ending. Doesn't diminish it in the least.

I was in a hurry and half-tripped just before the escalator up to see Birdman on Tuesday night -- and nearly face planted atop Shaileen who was walking in the other direction with two of her friends. Luckily (or unluckily) I caught my balance. It was only after catching my balance that I realized who would have broken my fall. I don't think she noticed what happened.
