The Grand Budapest Hotel
Much better than Moonrise Kingdom, his best since The Royal Tenenbaums, but essentially more of the same. Anderson needs to do something different.

Her
We finally saw this as well. Did you like it as much as The Old Man?
We thought it well done, albeit 30 minutes too long. Some thought-provoking questions about what truly constitutes a relationship.
Vin, I enjoyed the movie.
I watched it on an airplane and never really fair to seriously rate in that forum. I plan on watching it again sometime in the future to see if I'm truly in OM's camp, but well executed for sure.
I saw this last night. Interesting for sure. I can't say I've ever seen a film quite like it.
Match Point
The movie is worth watching if for nothing more than the wonderful Caruso songs.

The Parking Lot Movie
A quirky, interesting little documentary about the band of misfits (mostly grad. students figuring out what to do with their lives) who work st the Corner Lot, a parking lot near University of Virginia. Nothing earth shattering here, but I enjoyed it.
I liked the movie as a rental - entertaining
This was a fun flick. Watched during a flight and was perfect in that setting.

Thinking yesterday about the brilliant surrogate scene. SPOILERS AHEAD: Again the implications of AI technology mixed with human interaction and heart (Theodore), and the AI's created heart, are so well explored. It's about her mind right, but then who is about to have sex with? Certainly it's with Samantha's mind, but since the surrogate is not just an empty body then is it a menage a trois? Would it have been better for Theodore if she could have had her voice dubbed like in movies?
I believe what makes this such a great movie is you can think about so many of the scenes in so many ways and yet the answers are never just handed to you or made simple. Samantha takes "her" initial cues from him, but becomes human from interacting with him AND the environment through taking in external information sources--books, TV, etc.
A great film deserves multiple viewings, Her meets the test.
Midnight's Children
Saw Chef this afternoon. Very enjoyable, and not just for foodies. The very good cast played out their relationships convincingly.
Lone Survivor: Mark Wahlberg flick. Good action adventure movie. Not quite as good as "Shooter" but entertaining
Lego Movie: I would like to say I saw this with my kids, but watched on a flight. Thoroughly entertaining. Great example of a kids flick that has enough in it to make it enjoyable for adults

+1 - John Leguizamo is always great.
Her. Parcival had recommended at an offline, and while the premise seemed too far fetched, the movie did move along quite gracefully. Only having Scarlett's voice to work with, it was easy to give in to imagination. Joaquin was superb. Had the wife quite misty as well.

What did you think? Enjoyable or Hollywood drivel? I for one (seen in a proper theater with the wife) was entertained. Not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I thought the film had its moments, and thoroughly enjoyed the "groundhog day" effect.
Eastern Promises
Very enjoyable. Graphic but not gory.

Watching Grand Budapest Hotel tonight. Have to say, though, that we both loved Moonrise Kingdom. I think it's one of those films that you have to be in exactly the right frame or it might come across as twee. Fortunately, I was in the right frame of mind and though it was charming.
Hoop Reality
This "sequel" to Hoop Dreams was not very good and suffered from poor sound quality, and a terrible narration script and bad editing. What is interesting is that I believe this film was re-edited and re-released with the changes making it much less a sequal. The DVD sleeve from Netflix describes the movie as catching up with Arthur Agee and William Gates and shows a release date of 2007. The film I watched does catch up with Arthur Agee but also tells the story of Patrick Beverley's senior year (2006) at Marshall (same school as Agee attended) and contains footage/interviews about Beverley's success and then problems at Arkansas -- concluding with Beverley being drafted. William Gates is no where to be found. The Rotten Tomatoes site has listings for both Hoop Reality (2007), ehich would have been possible without the added segments on Beverly's college career, and Hoop Reality (2009) -- though both entries have basically the same description reflecting the version I saw.
I think the original version might well have been a better film or had more of a consistent message at least. Re-editing the movie to concentrate on just Agee and Beverley and their relationship would account for much of the editing mistakes and the bad narration by Agee. One of the final text screens sums up the overall quality of this release. Beverley played against Sherron Collins (Crane/Kansas) and Derrick Rose during the highlighted season (though I think Rose was only a junior). So the movie ends with text screens on where each of them are "now." On the Collins screen, they spell his first name Sharron and say he won a national championship at Kansas but returned to "high school" to finish his degree.

"Today's Special".
The story of a sous chef who quits and then, due to family circumstances, overhauls his family's Indian restaurant.
You'll like it.
No one famous in it.
The food is a supporting character.

Anchorman 2. I liked it.
okay, have anyone here watched Transformer Age of Extinction ? Disclaimer I haven't seen the new transformer Nor I have any intention to see it.
What did you think about it? I want to know if it's just a regular Michael Bay crap, or has Michael taken his slow-mo explosion CGI crap to a New Low ? And did you guys see some subliminal Pro-China ads implanted in there ?
It's a joint venture with a chinese filming company. And the fruit of this union produced a movie with many subliminal Ads of chinese brand that stuck out like an Eye sore, and meriting a 17/100 score on Rotten tomatoes. And According to a movie critic I know, this movie is a borderline State Sponsored Propaganda. Did anyone else feel that way when watching this movie ?

Along with A. O. Scott's print reviews, my favorite film reviews (and TV recaps) are virtually always on >What The Flick?!<. >Here< is the review of Transformers: Age of Extinction. They talk about the Chinese product placement starting at around the 4:30 mark. Two of the typical reviewers aren't in this clip and Amy Nicholson, who I'm not too familiar with, is. But I like Alonso Duralde and love Christy Lemiere. Plus, Christy >once< made out with Meredith Viera -- which doesn't actually show good taste on her part, but at least it shows open-mindedness.

I haven't seen it (nor am I likely to, except at gunpoint) but one review said the action shifts from US to Hong Kong for no reason other than to appease the film's financiers (and likely largest audience). Well, that and to shift the blatant product placements from US to Chinese brands.
Oh and I hope you get that sticky SHIFT key fixed soon, Slippery.

"Product placement" is not a synonym for "subliminal ads."

Hey it may be French, but so's Emmanuelle. However that film was made by the greatest name ever for a soft-core porn director--Just Jaeckin.
Under the Skin: recent Scarlett Johansson sci-fi flick
-->I'm going to try to watch this again because watching on a flight made for difficult viewing
-->the fact that the lovely Ms. Johannson appears in various stages of undress throughout the movie has nothing to do with my wanting to see this again!
Overall though, I feel like this wanted to be more thought-provoking than it actually was IMO. But, I'm going to reserve judgment until I can give this full attention

@winetarelli, Christie Lemiere is Hawt.
Hehe, VinT you cheeky Bastard. Yes, the key does indeed cease to function every time after some midnight cognac.
Speaking of the film's financier, I heard (from a few people) a few of the interesting things. Such as: Placement of chinese brand milk being drank by Hollywood stars.
Brilliant Aura of chinese military leadership emitting during crisis management
, or Hong Kong portrayed as a 3th tier rural Chinese city lagging behind the shadow of Beijin and Shanghai's greatnesses.
If this movie wasn't filmed by Michael Bay, I might actually be tempted to watch it to see what the other negative fuzz is all about, hopefully getting a good laugh in the process. Heck, these days I rather watch crappy movies starr Nicolas Cage than anything directed by Michael Bay.
