The Last Seduction

Once upon a time there was an attempt to break Linda Fiorentino into the big time. This movie was the final attempt. It had much fanfare, but director John Dahl (himself a minor director who was a great hope) didn't have what it takes to get Fiorentino into the next Femme Fatale.

He became a TV director and she has just faded with time.

I always really liked this movie.

Liked Fiorentino, too.

She was in Men in Black...

she was in a b movie called Gotcha with Anthony Edwards. She got my attention in that movie!

A personal favourite. Fascinating - especially since the subjects are the same age as me.

Besides directing features like Nell and The World Is Not Enough, I've seen Michael Apted's name pop up as director on a number of series lately, including episodes of Master of Sex and Ray Donovan.

Tell me, what was the last "mass market" movie you saw, and what were your impressions?

PH

Oh my. Let me think about what was the last time I viewed such. Confused

Argo
Lincoln
Life of Pi
Django Unchained
Zero Dark Thirty
Les Miserables

were all mass-marketed here last year. Surely you saw a few of those?

Proof of why one needs to stay away from populist films.

Les Mis was terrible -- apart from Hathaway. (And I adore the musical, btw.) The others were all good to very very very good. None awesome, but such is life.

Humbug! Razz

Last few days out of boredom:

We're the Millers : Amusing, held my attention.

The To-Do List : Vaguely repulsive with absolutely no redeeming value.

Big Grin ... well, if I were to watch one of the no watch movies, which would you select?

And seriously, do see 12 Years A Slave sooner rather than later. I would love to read your thoughts. And really just a wonderful movie, imo. Smile

Far less successful than I thought it to be. I like Simon Pegg and some of Edgar Wright's work. But I thought this was boring and heavy handed.

+1

Watched it over the week-end. Fan boy movie with reverences to everything under the sun and quite blatant about it. This was their Ocean's 12. Now that they've done it they can go on to do good work again...

That said, every time I see Rosamund Pike I fawn/pine/lust after her even more.

Alphaville

I've mentioned before that I love this untypical Godard work. Everything is unique from turning the "City of Lights" into a nightmarish backdrop through creative cinematography to creating the voice of the Alpha 60 computer from the speech of a man who'd lost his vocal cords so speaks using the burping technique that many learn to do.

The actors are each special. Eddie Constantine, the pock-marked stoic actor, portrays secret agent Lemmie Caution who drives a Ford Galaxie from the Outlands. Enigmatic actress Anna Karina plays the woman he tries to save. Lemmie, (who narrates to film more successfully than Harrison Ford in Blade Runner) refers to her "pretty sphinx face." And finally a surprise to see Akim Tamiroff as the missing agent Caution is looking for.

The film is loaded with memorable scenes that stuck with me for years in between re-watches. One example is the martyrs who are executed while standing on a swimming pool's diving board reciting anti-government slogans. Then they are shot and fall in the water.

I give this film a 96 while giving the previously mentioned Blade Runner (a failed attempt to blend noir and science fiction that Alphaville succeeds at on a shoe string budget and no special effects) a 79.

Please can I have my 2 1/2 hours back? And please could someone make a superhero movie that (a) doesn't feature a non-stop barrage of seizure-inducing bursts of white light, (b) isn't solely about the CGI destruction of everything in sight, and (c) has actual character development?

Yeah, I know I'm asking too much.

I think it was done with Unbreakable. Unfortunately that talented hack, M. Night Shyamalan always thinks he needs a surprise twist ending and this ones destroyed the entire movie.
