Apocalypse Now

Hopefully very large screen and HD? (especially for Apocalypse Now).

I've often said that, despite Speilberg's and Scorcesse's repeated brilliance over several decades, on the basis of these three films alone, Coppola has a reasonable claim to "world's greatest living director".
Zero Dark Thirty

A very very good movie that fails at true greatness due to two flaws that could have been worked out. It fails at truely being one of the greatest movies ever because the director and writer weren't quite up to the challenge.

UPSIDES: Incredibly well acted. Riveting, engaging, and thought provoking. Well paced -- never too slow nor too fast, and consistent. Jessica Chastain was particularly good.

FLAWS: (contains spoilers but nothing you don't already know about) (1) the treatment of the torture scenes and "facts" as they were presented was fine and appropriate, as far as I am concerned -- it was the dialogue after the fact that I found politically pro-torture and unappealing. (2) The final scenes of the actual raid were confusing, especially at the end, if you did not already know the story. (eg. how did half of the people wind up on the helicopter?)

WHY IT COULD HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY GOOD: The movie had the potential to engage the audience on the manhunt, themselves, putting the audience in the logical mind of Chastain's character and trying to figure things out. Instead, the movie presents itself purely as history, with evenets it does not necessarily explain as connected to each other. Had I been more intellectually engaged in the hunt, itself, rather than simply in the characters, this would have been historically (in the world of cinema) awesome.

Overall, a strong recommendation and one of my three favorite films of the year. 'A-/A' (Lincoln 'A-/A' and Moonrise Kingdom 'A' are the other two.)

Winner One of my all time favorites. So much better than the american version (even if it does have my great uncle in it...)

A great movie indeed.

I have not yet watched the American version. Assuming your great uncle is Donald, I'm a big fan of his work.

Actually thought Jack Black did a good job in this one. Knowing it was a true story and that they integrated a lot of the actual folks from the town made it even more enjoyable, and sad.

I agree that Jack Black was pretty good in this film, although I like him anyway. My favorite parts were the locals and how they kept dissing on the people in the county where the trial ended up being held.

I liked this one, too, although I am definately not a Jack Black fan.
Thought Shirley MacLaine was just playing herself.
