Nationals starting pitchers have not given up a run for over 41 innings.
Scherzer....
If I've seen a more impressive 3 starts in a row in my life, I can't remember it.

Yes. In my lifetime (since I came to the U.S.), Hershisher (sp?), Valenzuela, Gooden, Randy Johnson, Ryan, Nomo, Clemens, Pedro,

Orioles won the first game today of a day/night doubleheader.
That was the 5000th win since the team moved to Baltimore in 1954.
They then won the nightcap, and they are in 1st place in the AL East by percentage points.

The Metz had a rookie pitcher yesterday, starting in his first major league game.
Steven Matz.
The guy had Tommy John surgery at age 19. (He's now 24)
He makes the big leagues, pitches 7 and 2/3 innings, gives up 2 runs, gets the win and also.......
He goes 3 for 3 at the plate and drives in 4 runs.
He's the first pitcher to drive in 4 runs in his major league debut in baseball history.

I believe he is also the only batter (regardless of what position) to go at least 3-for-3 and drive in 4 runs in his first game. Pretty crazy
Tom Paciorek did something like that

Nope. Here is the box score from Tom P's first game:

Starlin Castro had 6 RBI's in his debut game in 2000.

Pat Borders (Toronto) and Ben Grieve (Oakland) hold the AL record for 5 RBIs in first game in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
In the NL, Castro has the record with the Cubs in 2010 of 6.
Joe Cunningham of St. Louis in 1954 and Walter Mueller of Philadelphia in 1922 both had 4.

Tonight Chris Sale tied Pedro's record for consecutive starts with 10+ strikeouts...he's having another terrific season, and it will have been wasted on this team. As much as I like watching him pitch on the south side, part of me hopes he is traded to a contending team so that he actually has a shot at a championship some time. He deserves better than this.
I saw a little note today from the NY Times that Bobby Bonilla will begin receiving $1.2M per year from the Mets until 2035.

Nice pension.
Seriously. I wonder how much of that is already spent or is ear-marked for the IRS for backed taxes.

I agree, trade him to the Cubs.
I dont especially care about the Marlins and hope some art falls on Jeffry Loria's head but Im a little excited today. Jose Fernandez makes his return from TJ surgery. I hope it goes well for him. His journey to MLB is a cool story and his stuff is simply electric.
Red Sox started David Ortiz at 1B today. There was concern about his fielding.
Well, he played the whole game without one putout. This was the first time in Boston history that the first baseman had no putouts.
In 17,867 games.
Remarkable.

In case anybody has missed this, the Yanks have opened up a 5-1/2 game lead and the Red Sux are 12 back. Looks like Red Sux Nation could finish dead last again.

Six and a half as of today. I wasn't expecting this, but I am now!
Yesterday was the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Congrats to Randy Johnson, Pedro, Smoltz, Biggio. One of these days (perhaps when Mo or Jeter gets there) I'll make a trip. Offline anyone?
Greinke's scoreless streak ended yesterday. It was a pretty impressive run. Kershaw now has a 29 inning streak going. Pretty awesome 1-2 punch. Just need them to perform in the playoffs.

lmao- not a chance!

Alex Rodriguez hit a Home Run last night for the Yankees. He is now 40 yrs old.
Fourth player in ML history to hit his first HR before he was 20 and hit a HR after age 40.
The other three...... Gary Sheffield, Rusty Staub and a fellow from Georgia, Ty Cobb.

Toronto trading for Troy Tulowitzki just came out of nowhere! they might still need (a lot) of pitching but I'd hate to go up against a line-up of Tulowitzki, Donaldson, Martin, Bautista & Encarnacion. Doesn't really matter who the other four hitters are...

That was a weird trade. I don't think it benefits Toronto. Sure, they may score 5 or 6 runs a game. Their SPs will give up 7,+ or bullpen will blow the lead.
I'm pretty sure you'll see Toronto deal for a top 3 starter and/or reliever.
Getting rid of Reyes was a big part of this deal, he was getting older and older by the second. Tulo has a lot of years of control left and more in the gas tank.
I think Toronto is just trying to get into the playoffs this year before making a big push for next year. Then they have Buehrle and Dickey's $40+ million coming off the books to be replaced with Sanchez and Strolman.

I think all the Tigers fans realize this team's fate for this year, but the team and management have other ideas.
I love Price and Cespedes, but sure would like to know what kind of return we could get for them to help out next year and beyond.

PRICE!!!!
I love the Tulo trade for Toronto. Better offense, better defense, under control for awhile and they didn't have to give up any top prospects. That final thing was important because they needed Norris to get Price. Good job all around by Toronto.
Houston has really benefitted by having a deep farm system. Kazmir and now Gomez (thinking I'm missing someone too) are great adds.
Mets need to pick up an OF bad. They've made some nice little moves, but need at least one big bat.
And when are my Cubbies going to do something? They need a SP, a reliever would be nice, and a corner OF. They need to find an AL trading partner that has a good OF and trade Vogelbach (think that is his name), a minor leaguer who can hit for power but has no position. along with a couple of other mid-level prospects. Don't love Cespedes, but he would be a good get. Unfortunately with VMart, the Tigers probably aren't in the market for a DH.

I"d have to say Toronto is looking a whole lot better than it has in many many years! Just picked up a really good reliever in Mark Lowe and a LF bat outfielder in Ben Revere as well who's really fast and batting near .300. I guess their new lead-off hitter...
Toronto has improved its team for sure. They will be really tough for the rest of the season.
Yesterday, the Mets had 3 Home Runs in 5 pitches. Their first baseman, Lucas Duda has 9 HRs in his last 8 games, with 12 RBIs.
Note: Frank Howard used to play 1st base or left field for the Washington Senators. On May 12, 1968, he hit Home Runs in his final two at bats. On May 18, he it home runs in his first 3 At bats.
During that period, he had 10 home runs in 20 at bats.

This season is shaping up to be an exciting one for Mets and Yankee fans. The introduction of a second wild card also keeps more fans of the mid-market teams interested as well. Great trades by the Mets.

Toronto has now won 11 of their prior 12 games, including a sweep of the Yankees. They are now only 1.5 games out of first place.
Quod erat demonstrandum
and this morning....first place for Toronto.
