My favorite places to eat in San Diego for lunch are places like Bronx Pizza on Washington. Dao Son on the corner of El Cajon and Texas has some of the best Vietnamese food around, and cheap as hell. (Try the Spring Rolls and the Tasy Red Chicken.) I also agree with Flubis about El Indio, but I think I might prefer El Cuervo on Washington St. in Hillcrest for my mexican fix. Try the burrito de pollo adobado. Amazing!
When the weather is nice, can't beat the upstairs outdoor terrace at George's at the Cove in La Jolla. The outdoor terrace has a casual fare menu. (The indoor dining room is formal and, as you would expect, a more formal menu (with huge wine list)).

I also like the new Tommies hamburger stand on Claremont Mesa Blvd. It is the same owner as the Tommies chain in Los Angeles. He finally opened a branch in San Diego. Best chiliburger in town. Bring your Rolaids.
