-really good (1995 would have likely been a declared vintage if not for 91/92 and 94 declarations)
-fair price (price is lower than the lowest half bottle price on winesearcher)
-half bottles

Ports for sale in Ontario rarely check even one of those boxes, much less all three. Stock up! I did!!

(and there are 3 bottles left at Manulife that are going for $25!)

Oy vey. Now I have to buy some of these. You guys are killing me.
Champagne and Port. A starter and a finisher for dinners. Thanks for all the suggestions to my fellow LCBO comrads.

Thank you Bman! I picked up 4 today. Also happy that I got some of the 1991 in half bottles $21.95 USD a little while back. At the time I was unfamiliar with the Guimaraens but figured it was worth a go at the price.

My pleasure! I've already tried one and liked it a lot (the price made it taste even better!) Missed the splits of the 91 some how though.... Frown
I went by the Crossroads clearance center last week and noticed a stack of Cava in an end-aisle. It was a blend of Xarel·lo and Macabeu, so it should be a good value on clearance, wouldn't you guess? It was unpriced so I asked Robert (he looks after the clearance wines) for a price-check. When he said $62 I almost dropped the bottle.

That's just about as bad as the British sparkling wine they have had 'on sale' for the past year at $60!

Sheesh; the stores in my neck of the woods don't know the meaning of the term 'mark down'. The best is usually something that started at $19 and is no $16...
Yes VinCentric, you are in a kind off black hole when it comes to the proximity of LCBO stores with deals. I am fortunate that work takes me all around town and if I have time I pop in the local store to see if they have anything.
Picked up yesterday a Pelissero Barbaresco Bricco San Giuliano for $27 in a small store in Richmond Hill. Most other stores have it for $38. It was their last bottle. Not a wine which nocks your socks off but still decent enough.
Wah, wah, wah, you GTA guys have no idea how good you have it! We never see a single bottle marked down here, aside from the system-wide sales.

When I lived in Oakville the store at Appleby and New in Burlington regularly marked much good stuff and the Laird store is heaven - I always try to stop by when in Toronto. Crossroads has disappointed more often than not but got some 2010 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace there once for a very sweet price.

Bman - read what Vinelouse said.... All of GTA is not created equally in the eyes of the KGBO. Vinelouse - thanks for rubbing it in

I live not far from Appleby and New. Those days are gone. Store managers now seem adverse to such sales. Most markdowns now are the system wide mini-discounts, and other markdowns are on stuff they can't sell(with good reason).

Bottles were reduced due to the good graces of the PCs there, I think. One was Celeste Texeira, who moved to a different store in Burlington a couple of years ago, and the name of the other PC escapes me but he was also happy to cut prices on bottles that had been on the shelves for months. Both very nice people who enjoyed chatting about wine with their fellow travelers. Got some Clarendon Hills grenaches there for 30% off, which made me very happy!

There other is Terry, and I know them both. Each has confirmed that there are more restrictions than there were a couple of years ago. You still see the odd deal but not as many as back then.

What was the wine?

I don't recall the name of the producer. I'll check next time I'm there.

It's far from that. Most of the time there are no mark downs and if so mainly just wine you wouldn't want to drink anyway. I probably spend more then 5 hours before I find something worthwhile.

VinCentric - email send with my latest find.

Thank you Vinelouse

This. While certainly better than those pathetic $1 or $2 off system-wide "sales", these 20-30% store specific discretionary discounts are few and far between and involve inventory that are slow to turn over.

Although you might find a gem every so often, there are many duds as there's a reason why they were stale inventory in the first place. I usually buy them to try that I otherwise would not have had interest in if not for the discount.

I live not far from the Laird store and visit it religiously but, from a wine buying perspective, would be happy to trade places with those living near the Quebec border. Nowadays, in particular for higher end wines, SAQ has better pricing in general.

These seem to have completely disappeared, at least in the Ottawa stores that I frequent.

Is Terry still at that store? And where is Celeste now?

Hey bman,

Terry is still at Appelby and New. Celeste is at my local store (Walkers & Dundas). Glad to have her there! Very helpful.

Discounted from $65 to $53 yesterday. Supposed to be really good stuff. You're welcome.

We had this on the weekend and it was lovely

Thanks WineCanuck, Dok. Zero in Etobicoke. 27 in Gravenhurst. I can see a lot of Rose Champers moving in Gravenhurst at this time of year, and they won't do interstore transfers on discounted items Mad .

Thankful for the extended wine newtork. Have a friend who is downtown looking for some...

Thanks for the heads up on the Paillard Rose. I grabbed a few this morning. If someone needs bottles, let me know as my store has a case left.

Thanks, Fowler. Terry probably won't remember me but Celeste might - next time you see them please tell them that Bob from Ottawa - the guy who used to winegeek-out with them at length at Appleby and New and appreciate their deep discounts -says hello!
Imagine my excitement when I saw 5 bottles of this at the Toronto Beaches store on the Vintages website this morning:

E. GUIGAL EX VOTO HERMITAGE BLANC 2013
VINTAGES 125567 | 750 mL bottle

Price: $ 69.00

So of course I called the store to see if they were actually Ex Voto and..........

they're not. Basic Hermitage. Not Ex Voto.
