LOL.
Has any of the local crew actually tried this stuff? We've had some interesting Sherries at dinners, some that I've liked, others, well others enjoyed them more. It sounds pretty thick, but for $15 it may be worth a try. It gets good reviews in places. I quess if it didn't work on the ice cream, you could seal the cracks on your driveway with it...

I've had it a number of times and find it great value for money. Of course, one must like px though. And while I have poured it over ice cream I prefer it on its own, at cellar temp or cooler. I really don't like px at room temp.

It's technically not a Sherry - it's from Montilla-Moriles.

That said, it's something that you can drink by the thimbleful or two and not much more. It's pretty thick and cloying, and if you drink more than that your teeth will hurt. It needs a very sweet dessert like sticky toffee pudding with ice cream to cut the richness.

It's pretty much indestructable. I've had a bottle open for about six months in the fridge and it's still fine. I believe Rob brought one to vinoevelo's the one time that was still half full and open a year. Still fine.

Have fun trying to reopen the bottle though as the dried sugar is worse than super glue!

I brought this elixir to the last offline dinner we had at LaVinia. You (as well as Futronic and Sunnylea57) were there. And I daresay you drank it there too! shake

You probably made some appreciative comments too! bart

Thanks Fut, and for the clarification re: Montilla-Morillas, and the rest. I'm guessing get a bottle and save it for when there's a good enough group to share thimblefuls. The sticky toffee pudding & ice cream is a good suggestion.

Slight Correction --> What I brought to the dinner was Gonzales Byass Noe Pedro Ximinez Muy Viejo. But it was thick, sticky and almost black.

Notwithstanding the advice of my old pal Fut, I quite enjoy a few ounces of this stuff, as have many of those to whom I've served it. It IS very thick and sweet but I don't see that as an obstacle to drinking more than a thimbleful. Of course, about a third of my cellar is dessert wines (if you can call vintage port a dessert wine!) so perhaps it's just me!

And it's great when you have a sore throat - coats the throat, makes you sleepy, tastes great, gives you a little buzz - what's not to like?! bluesbros

That was really tasty and showed a bit more acidity to balance the sweetness. Regardless, that sherry is of better quality than the Alvear Montilla-Moriles. A more appropriate comparison would be the VORS Noe vs the vintage PX Montilla-Moriles from Toro Albala. In that case, the Toro Albala wins hands down for me.

That bottle was incredibly disappointing given the 100 points from Parker. Opened as a bottle of Sun-Maid raisins soaked in vodka. Seriously that was ALL it tasted like.

Vinoevelo did say that after a few weeks of it being open it blossomed into something all together better and nuanced, bitter walnut, layers of raisin, dried fig, candied peel etc...

Like fut says, this is something to have in a small cordial glass every few night over the course of a month or two and watch the changes.

With all that's been said above, my expectations are not high, but for $15, I like Rob & Fut's idea of following it over a month or two...and hope it doesn't get glued shut in the process.

We had more than one Sherry type beverage at La Vinia. My difficulty is that aside from remembering that one was a 'Vors', I don't remember which I liked or didn't like. I'm pretty sure I passed one of my glasses over to Ricardo Madeira, who was enjoying it much more than me.

Pricey though....

But these are all legendary years.[/QUOTE]

With the dollar tanking, it doesn't look as bad vis. U.S. pricing. WS Pro low for the 98 is $90. Add all the costs to get it home and that's pushing $200 Cdn landed.

I check out that store regularly, as they often put stuff on 20% sale. Usually Cali Cabs, but sometimes Bordeaux or CdP.

I was there about a week ago and recall seeing the 2012 Rutherford Ranch Reserve CS and the 2009 Krupp Brothers Veraison Red at 20% off. I'm not familiar with either, so didn't buy.

There are also a handful of expensive California Reds on sale at the Bank & Walkley store.

The Krupp is down 20% province wide.Good wine but not great value, unless taken in the context of the drop in the Canadian $ since it was listed. Re the others, the LCBO has a load of 2011s that haven't been moving, so the markdowns aren't surprising. The vintage produced what was likely the lowest quality generally for California Cabs in the past decade (or more).
8 pages of markdowns in Vintages. Most are wines that have been around for a while and are low numbers.

A few jumping out.
- Ridge Monte Bello 2011 $127.75 (reg $159.95)
* Half bottles @ $68.75

- L'Aventure Cabernet 2010 $78.75 (reg $98)

- Corison Cabernet 2005 $91.25 (reg $113.95)

A bunch of pricey Bordeaux:

- 09 Figeac $265.25

- 04 Ausone $632.25

- 05 LLC $395.75

- 08 La Providence $99.75

Chapoutier & Guigal

- 06 Ex Voto Rouge $231.25

- 2010 Le Pavillion Rouge Chapoutier $568.25

- 08 St. Joseph L'Hospice $63.25

- 07 Ex Voto Blanc $125.25

- 09 Jesuitengarten Riesling $77.65

Just a few.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I ventured west of Bronson (something I rarely do) to pick up the remaining bottles of the Adaptation cab, which is one of my favourites even at full price! Got a Paul Hobbs chardonnay as well, which we had last night but was not good QPR, IMHO, even at the lower price.

Just got back from the Bank and Walkley store where there are perhaps 30 or so bottles marked down from all regions, including some pricey Bordeaux and 2007 ports. Of course, the markdowns on the latter makes them merely over-priced, rather than grossly so!

Yes, I should have been more clear. Prices are discounted, but couldn't see a way to find a discrete list of those that had discounted prices.
This has all been gone over a million times, but I still find the LCBO attitude to delists/markdowns bizarre.

There are relatively few people in the province who would ever consider paying (say) $50 for a bottle of wine. Why not make available to them the information that there has been a price reduction? I mean, assuming that you actually want to sell the wine...

Instead, we have an entire thread dedicated to stalking the LCBO and trying to find various bottles at various stores, copies of markdown lists from Product Consultants, etc. etc. It really is madness.
