LOL.
Has any of the local crew actually tried this stuff? We've had some interesting Sherries at dinners, some that I've liked, others, well others enjoyed them more. It sounds pretty thick, but for $15 it may be worth a try. It gets good reviews in places. I quess if it didn't work on the ice cream, you could seal the cracks on your driveway with it...

I've had it a number of times and find it great value for money. Of course, one must like px though. And while I have poured it over ice cream I prefer it on its own, at cellar temp or cooler. I really don't like px at room temp.

It's technically not a Sherry - it's from Montilla-Moriles.

That said, it's something that you can drink by the thimbleful or two and not much more. It's pretty thick and cloying, and if you drink more than that your teeth will hurt. It needs a very sweet dessert like sticky toffee pudding with ice cream to cut the richness.

It's pretty much indestructable. I've had a bottle open for about six months in the fridge and it's still fine. I believe Rob brought one to vinoevelo's the one time that was still half full and open a year. Still fine.

Have fun trying to reopen the bottle though as the dried sugar is worse than super glue!

I brought this elixir to the last offline dinner we had at LaVinia. You (as well as Futronic and Sunnylea57) were there. And I daresay you drank it there too! shake

You probably made some appreciative comments too! bart

Thanks Fut, and for the clarification re: Montilla-Morillas, and the rest. I'm guessing get a bottle and save it for when there's a good enough group to share thimblefuls. The sticky toffee pudding & ice cream is a good suggestion.

Slight Correction --> What I brought to the dinner was Gonzales Byass Noe Pedro Ximinez Muy Viejo. But it was thick, sticky and almost black.

Notwithstanding the advice of my old pal Fut, I quite enjoy a few ounces of this stuff, as have many of those to whom I've served it. It IS very thick and sweet but I don't see that as an obstacle to drinking more than a thimbleful. Of course, about a third of my cellar is dessert wines (if you can call vintage port a dessert wine!) so perhaps it's just me!

And it's great when you have a sore throat - coats the throat, makes you sleepy, tastes great, gives you a little buzz - what's not to like?! bluesbros

That was really tasty and showed a bit more acidity to balance the sweetness. Regardless, that sherry is of better quality than the Alvear Montilla-Moriles. A more appropriate comparison would be the VORS Noe vs the vintage PX Montilla-Moriles from Toro Albala. In that case, the Toro Albala wins hands down for me.

That bottle was incredibly disappointing given the 100 points from Parker. Opened as a bottle of Sun-Maid raisins soaked in vodka. Seriously that was ALL it tasted like.

Vinoevelo did say that after a few weeks of it being open it blossomed into something all together better and nuanced, bitter walnut, layers of raisin, dried fig, candied peel etc...

Like fut says, this is something to have in a small cordial glass every few night over the course of a month or two and watch the changes.

With all that's been said above, my expectations are not high, but for $15, I like Rob & Fut's idea of following it over a month or two...and hope it doesn't get glued shut in the process.

We had more than one Sherry type beverage at La Vinia. My difficulty is that aside from remembering that one was a 'Vors', I don't remember which I liked or didn't like. I'm pretty sure I passed one of my glasses over to Ricardo Madeira, who was enjoying it much more than me.

But these are all legendary years.[/QUOTE]

With the dollar tanking, it doesn't look as bad vis. U.S. pricing. WS Pro low for the 98 is $90. Add all the costs to get it home and that's pushing $200 Cdn landed.

I check out that store regularly, as they often put stuff on 20% sale. Usually Cali Cabs, but sometimes Bordeaux or CdP.

I was there about a week ago and recall seeing the 2012 Rutherford Ranch Reserve CS and the 2009 Krupp Brothers Veraison Red at 20% off. I'm not familiar with either, so didn't buy.

There are also a handful of expensive California Reds on sale at the Bank & Walkley store.

The Krupp is down 20% province wide.Good wine but not great value, unless taken in the context of the drop in the Canadian $ since it was listed. Re the others, the LCBO has a load of 2011s that haven't been moving, so the markdowns aren't surprising. The vintage produced what was likely the lowest quality generally for California Cabs in the past decade (or more).
8 pages of markdowns in Vintages. Most are wines that have been around for a while and are low numbers.

A few jumping out.
- Ridge Monte Bello 2011 $127.75 (reg $159.95)
* Half bottles @ $68.75

- L'Aventure Cabernet 2010 $78.75 (reg $98)

- Corison Cabernet 2005 $91.25 (reg $113.95)

A bunch of pricey Bordeaux:

- 09 Figeac $265.25

- 04 Ausone $632.25

- 05 LLC $395.75

- 08 La Providence $99.75

Chapoutier & Guigal

- 06 Ex Voto Rouge $231.25

- 2010 Le Pavillion Rouge Chapoutier $568.25

- 08 St. Joseph L'Hospice $63.25

- 07 Ex Voto Blanc $125.25

- 09 Jesuitengarten Riesling $77.65

Just a few.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I ventured west of Bronson (something I rarely do) to pick up the remaining bottles of the Adaptation cab, which is one of my favourites even at full price! Got a Paul Hobbs chardonnay as well, which we had last night but was not good QPR, IMHO, even at the lower price.

Just got back from the Bank and Walkley store where there are perhaps 30 or so bottles marked down from all regions, including some pricey Bordeaux and 2007 ports. Of course, the markdowns on the latter makes them merely over-priced, rather than grossly so!

Yes, I should have been more clear. Prices are discounted, but couldn't see a way to find a discrete list of those that had discounted prices.
This has all been gone over a million times, but I still find the LCBO attitude to delists/markdowns bizarre.

There are relatively few people in the province who would ever consider paying (say) $50 for a bottle of wine. Why not make available to them the information that there has been a price reduction? I mean, assuming that you actually want to sell the wine...

Instead, we have an entire thread dedicated to stalking the LCBO and trying to find various bottles at various stores, copies of markdown lists from Product Consultants, etc. etc. It really is madness.

Finding a good wine on sale is great but sometimes it is possible to find comparable wines more readily available which are priced right from the start. Anyone that likes the Heartland Director's Cut Shiraz (and I am an unabashed fan) may be well advised to keep a little change in their pocket for when the 2012 Troy Kalleske Pirathon Shiraz becomes available on the April 16th Release at $29.95. An all Barossa shiraz sourced from premium vineyards in the Northeast corner such as Belvedere, Moppa, Greenock, Seppetsfeld, Ebenezer. This baby only comes around every four years or so.

BTW, any product to be delisted at my store has had the bin tag marked with a red dot (courtesy of a bingo dabber) which lets customers know that these products are to be price reduced effective on a Monday in the near future. This prevents someone buying a Les Terrases on Sunday at $48.95 and then returning on Monday to buy some extra bottles learning they could have saved nine bucks if they had waited a day.

Thank you, nicos. LCBO could use more PC's like you. A LOT more.
I had never stepped foot in the Oakville store at Dundas and Trafalgar, but stopped on my way home from a conference to grab a bottle of the 2011 Ridge Monte Bello to add to my existing supply. I was surprised to see that in addition to a good supply of the aforementioned markdowns, they had marked down a couple dozen other items. I grabbed a couple of the 2004 Faustino I Gran Riserva @ $28. Despite the tacky packaging I think what's inside is actually pretty decent traditional Rioja.

There were lots of discounted wines I wouldn't be interested in buying at any price, but a few that interested me were:

2011 Maison Roche de Bellene Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru - $71
2012 Vincent De La Remondière Marsannay - $24.00
2013 Antinori Castello della Sala Cervaro della Sala - $46
2011 Paitin Sori' Paitin Barbaresco - $39
2004 Faustino I Gran Riserva Rioja - $28
2013 Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay - $61
2013 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay - $52

"MV"?? I only see vintage bottles on cellartracker. And the picture of the bottle on the Vintages website shows a vintage though none is mentioned otherwise

Machine, if you're joking, you missed the mark by an M. You should have said MMV. As in 2005.

It's not in the same league as the 2002 or 2004, but it's still a Grande Annee.

Worth trying at that price?

I'm just basing that comment on what I know of the vintage and what I've read about the 2005 GA specifically. Apparently the 2005 Grande Année more of a near-term drinker. Personally, I'm on the fence re: value. For near-term drinking there are plenty of solid NV bottles for half that price or less. Still, I like the GA style very much...

Personally, I'm on the fence re: value. For near-term drinking there are plenty of solid NV bottles for half that price or less. Still, I like the GA style very much...

I passed when I realized it's the 2005. 2004 great, 2002 amazing, 2008 really looking forward too. 2005? I'd rather buy something else.
not necessairily a discount alert but weston has some 2011 Az. Ag. Randi 'Burson' Ravenna Rosso that i tried on a punt the other night at $18 having never tried a ravenna IGT - i liked it enough that i went back and bought 12 more today.

There is also some diebolt-vallois left on the shelf and 2013 shafer red shoulder ranch marked down to $54

$109 was the price for this wine in the Fall 2009 Classics catalogue.
Not much to talk about lately under the 'value' topic at the LCBO. I'm not sure this qualifies either, but it is the best I have seen at Crossroads in quite a while:

2011 Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo @$37 (stained labels)
2013 Boroli Langhe Anna Rosso @$13.50 (blend of 50% nebbiolo, 33% barbera, 11% merlot)

If that doesn't do it for you, then fuhgeddaboudit. Value ain't happenin in Ontario!

I've only shopped at Crossroads during daylight. All joking aside, the manager at my local LCBO (Burnamthorpe) got transferred to a store (Albion IIRC) in north Etobicoke. He was a real nice guy, a gentleman, one of the few good ones at the KGBO. He got shot.

Isn't that the release price?

I popped into Crossroads tonight. They had several good wines in the Clearance section but their notion of a clearance price seems to have changed. Discounts were in the 1-3% range from the original release price. I talked to Carl about it and he said this seems to be the current/new pricing strategy at the Monopole.

Makes you wonder how they can justify seizing inventory from the agents. Being a government agency means never having to make sense...
Lots of stock in the clearance section at Crossroads, but not much to get excited about.

A dozen bottles of 2013 Castello di Ama Al Poggio at $33.95. I've never tried the Al Poggio, and don't know what the release price was, so I didn't bite.

But I did pick up two good deals. Single bottles (or I would have bought more):

2010 Il Poggione BdM for $49.45
2010 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) BdM for $61.35

$68 from Lifford. So I'm very happy with $49.
went by crossroads this aft - mostly as per OTW's assessment above. I did grab some '10 Pelissero Nubiola Barbaresco @ $36.50 & '13 Franck Balthazar Cornas Chaillot @ $56.85. They also have cases of'12 Bertrand Ambroise bourgogne discounted to just under $20 - anyone with any input on this? possible holiday house red?

edit for bman - i also remember seeing some mollydooker two left feet for $30-something. email me if you want me to grab some.

Good price on the Pelissero. That's 20% off the release price from 4 weeks ago.

That's total BS is what it is. Different CSPC code was the one discounted. I'll be calling Vintages tomorrow morning.

Good on vinoevelo though.

Burgundy Al on CT says "Earthy fruit with some roasted meat and rustic character". But the guy's only posted 19,000 tasting notes so what does he know? At 8g/L RS, this'll likely be a simple but satisfying crowd pleaser.

Thanks vinoevelo but I think I'm good - my cheapo Mollydooker preference is Boxer and I got 11 bottles of Enchanted Path at the last auction for a sweet price! And I think the Two Left Feet sold for $33 initially, no?

I stopped in there a few times but rarely found much of interest....though that time I got a six pack of Diamond Creek cabernet sauvignon Volcanic Hill for CAD$139 a bottle, I think it was, more than makes up for that!
With the holidays fast approaching, there is a need for social wine. This one fits the bill nicely:

NV Vigneti Zanatta Prosecco di Treviso @$11 (reduced from $20)

This just another 'seizure' brought to the people of Ontario by our much-loved KGBO. Import agent must be licking the wound torn in his backside while his wine is being distributed at the Crossroads Clearance Center.

Still out of my price league, sadly, as I love all Numanthias. Tried to get the Numanthia Numanthia at this month's Classics sale but was too late. If anyone has more than they need, please let me know!
2013 Galerie Pleinair cabernet sauvignon - marked down from $85 to $65 at the Laird store.

Had it tonight - enjoyed it but it's just barely worth the lesser price, IMHO.

Had it at the relatively-newly re-opened Carman's (now "Carmen's", for some reason) steakhouse on Alexander at Yonge. Quite pricey but the steaks were great, the portions overly generous, the wine service was correct and the back dining room seemed to be just as it was when I was last there (roaring wood smoke fireplace, stained glass windows, old beer steins, etc.) .......37 years ago!!! Old school steakhouse (dark, thick cut garlic bread served hot, white table clothes, server personable and experienced). And no corkage on Sundays!!!
Not so much a price alert as an availability alert for craft beer lovers. As I type this, select stores in Otario are receiving a limited number of six packs of A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' by Lagunitas. I don't know if this has ever been sold in ON before, but my guess is it will sell through fairly quickly. And once it's gone, it's gone.

On the upside, I did get my order in for a box of the 2013 Paolo Scavino Barolo.. There's some of the 2011 Brovia Villero at HWY 27 & & but at full pop. I tasted the Villero at the winery...yum.

Half bottles of 1995 Fonseca Guimaraens vintage port for $35.75 available all over the province. I almost fell over when I saw them on the shelves. I look for 3 things in a vintage port:

-really good (1995 would have likely been a declared vintage if not for 91/92 and 94 declarations)
-fair price (price is lower than the lowest half bottle price on winesearcher)
-half bottles

Ports for sale in Ontario rarely check even one of those boxes, much less all three. Stock up! I did!!

(and there are 3 bottles left at Manulife that are going for $25!)
System wide markdown on a very good grower-producer Champagne:

NV Laherte Frères Ultradition Brut Champagne

Released back in February at $48.75 and it was a good value at that price.

Now marked down to $39.75 and I think it's a "back the truck up" proposition at the new price.

Not sure whose note this is. Found it on Chambers St Wine's website:

60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay that doesn't go through malolactic fermentation, along with 10% Pinot Noir. There is a delicate red fruit quality — pale plums — but otherwise the high-toned Chardonnay comes through with a delightful lemon tone. Earthy salinity and minerals lead to a dry, mouth-watering finish. A large percentage of Meunier gives this Champagne a broad, rich, earthy character that matches very well with Beau Soleil oysters and Caviar. MSB

As for the Champagne, it won't rock your world but it's a solid daily drinker sparkler. It has plenty of lemon curd and tart green apple with sharp acidity... but as it warms and opens up it gets broader and richer with some autolytics. LCBO site says 3G/l but that's wrong. It's 7G/l.

I went by the Crossroads clearance center last week and noticed a stack of Cava in an end-aisle. It was a blend of Xarel·lo and Macabeu, so it should be a good value on clearance, wouldn't you guess? It was unpriced so I asked Robert (he looks after the clearance wines) for a price-check. When he said $62 I almost dropped the bottle.

That's just about as bad as the British sparkling wine they have had 'on sale' for the past year at $60!

Yes VinCentric, you are in a kind off black hole when it comes to the proximity of LCBO stores with deals. I am fortunate that work takes me all around town and if I have time I pop in the local store to see if they have anything.
Picked up yesterday a Pelissero Barbaresco Bricco San Giuliano for $27 in a small store in Richmond Hill. Most other stores have it for $38. It was their last bottle. Not a wine which nocks your socks off but still decent enough.
Wah, wah, wah, you GTA guys have no idea how good you have it! We never see a single bottle marked down here, aside from the system-wide sales.

When I lived in Oakville the store at Appleby and New in Burlington regularly marked much good stuff and the Laird store is heaven - I always try to stop by when in Toronto. Crossroads has disappointed more often than not but got some 2010 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace there once for a very sweet price.

Bottles were reduced due to the good graces of the PCs there, I think. One was Celeste Texeira, who moved to a different store in Burlington a couple of years ago, and the name of the other PC escapes me but he was also happy to cut prices on bottles that had been on the shelves for months. Both very nice people who enjoyed chatting about wine with their fellow travelers. Got some Clarendon Hills grenaches there for 30% off, which made me very happy!
