The Bruno Rocca Rabaja has been gathering dust for a couple of weeks now. Compared to US pricing, it's not a bad value but I guess there aren't enough Barbaresco fans prowling around the 401-Weston Rd area.

I visited the winery with OTW on our fall excursion: most/only disappointing winery visit of the trip. IIRC, OTW was looking to taste the Rabaja, especially the 2010 and all we got was their lower end wines:

Bruno Rocca tasted at the winery:
2013 Langhe Chardonnay
2013 Tribole Dolcetto d’Alba
2012 Barbaresco
2010 Barbaresco Coparossa

The tasting was underwhelming.

I'd be interested to hear if OTW has had a chance to taste it elsewhere.

In contrast, our visit to Sottimano made me want to load up on Sottimano and seek out other good Barbaresco.

I've had the 2008 Bruno Rocca Rabaja and thought it was a bit light but nicely balance and smooth.

I was quite disappointed at being told the 2011 Rabaja was unavailable during our visit to the winery. I didn't just drop in because I was in the neighbourhood. Much as I enjoyed meeting Elena Oberto and Bruno, and admiring Bruno's motorcycle, I would rather have drunk the 2011 Rabaja.

Like VinCentric, I would sooner buy Sottimano'a Barbaresco. I thought each of the 2011's had a lot of distinctive vineyard character and all of them were really tasty. Another Barbaresco winery I was impressed with was Cigliuti. I tasted their Barbaresco Serraboella from multiple vintages and was impressed.

Totally understand. The distinctions are just a matter of personal preference. If you look at the professional reviewers, they clearly give the Bruno Rocca Rabaja the highest scores.

And who would you rather believe ... a Pro, or an amateur Punter like me?
I've seen a couple of the SOL products sneak through the Clearance Center lately. On Friday morning, I stopped in at Crossroads on the way out to Guelph and found some Gaston-Chiquet B de B Brut on sale for $37.50. That seemed weird because it’s currently available on Vintages Shop-on-Line for $59. The answer is that the bottles being cleared were classed as consignment and the ones on SOL are not. Apparently, this makes them different wines/products at the KGBO. Really?!?!? This is an organisation without a brain in its head. Or maybe a brain but no judgement.

Another customer I met a the store said there was another champagne that went through there last week. The quantities are small, so you have to be quick.

I bought one over a year ago and never seem to find a good time to open it. Let us know if it's ready.

Will do. Don't have any specific plans to drink it anytime soon though.

Hey! No scoopin my store!!! Wink

It is a good store for discounts. A little out of the way for me, but I try to get there once or twice a month.

Shhhhh.... not so loud!!!

The manager is a bit of a douche, but Sherry White (Vintages Consultant) is awesome. Really knows her stuff and will literally MOVE MOUNTAINS to bring in whatever I want, from anywhere in the province.

Funny how often I have heard that expression. Must be what it takes to get ahead in the KGBO.

I think it's likely a nice to have, not a must have on their qualifications for promotion. A number of store managers have actually been really good people, who have gone out of their way to be helpful, including holding popular wines for me (before I asked). Higher up, Tom Wilson was good to me on a number of occasions and always a straight shooter imo. I believe Tom did his best given the constraints of the KGBO.

Two more great PCs are Celeste and Terry at the Burlington store at Appleby and New Streets. Never any hesitation in bringing in wines from other stores or offering limited bottles they think I'll like. First class people.
I'll give a nod to a couple of PC's who have always treated me well.

Lou at Laird - Always helpful, great reco's and hasn't hesitated to either put something aside or bring something in for me.

Andy, formerly of Laird, now at Summerhill. Never seen the man not smile. Always helpful and willing to find me what I am looking for.

For any of you Little Britain fans, it was a bit of a shame to hear that Andy left Lou to go to Summerhill.

Lou is better off -- Andy was consistently a dickhead to him!

He's another one of the good ones - first at Vanier store, then the flagship. Can't believe how much weight he's lost!
I was just at Weston & 401 and as expected the "deals" are pretty poor. I actually found better deals in the Vintages section itself. The best one I noted was that they had marked down Ridge Monte Bello 2011 375mL to $68 from $86 (750mL still going for $155), so I bought a couple. Not a fabulous steal, but still a deal and a great producer which we don't often see these days. LCBO online still shows $86 per so this is a store level markdown.

I later called them because I only saw one left and they confirmed that LCBO inventory says they have 17 left although the individual I was speaking to didn't do a physical check. Perhaps more in storage but if you want some perhaps call in advance.
Stopped in at Crossroads this afternoon to pick up 3 x 375ml bottles of 2011 Ridge Monte Bello per Vijay's advice above. The PC at Crossroads must still be riding on training wheels - either that or he's acting the part for a starring role in a Dumb and Dumber sequel!

While I was there, I found 4 bottles of champagne in the clearance section:

NV Gaston Chiquet Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne d'Aÿ (disgorged September 2013) ($37.95 this time - I don't understand why the price increased by 45 cents since last week)
NV Vilmart Champagne Cuvée Rubis ($37.95)
NV Gardet Brut Blancs de Blancs ($50.50)
NV Gardet Brut Rosé ($57.50)

The two Georges Gardet champagnes appear to be KGBO lab samples. I don't imagine that the price for these two bottles is all that special - but I don't really know since the internet seemed to have very little information about them. However the Vilmart seemed to be a genuine value, although I've never had one before so can't say for sure.

@Rob S. --> any input/comments about these wines?

Sorry, just saw this. Vilmart is "poor man's Krug" and the Rubis is a really nice rose which sees a bit of oak. I'm a fan and that's a deal at double the price. Good score.

And we all know that the KGBO has used that trick before! Roll Eyes
System wide discount on Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé Champagne on the General List. Originally $57.95, now $37.95 due to delisting.

Anyone tried this? I'm not positive it's even worth the $38 but it's not often you find a rose at that price.

Also of note I just noticed the LCBO added a "Check all stores" link to the products on their website. Quite a useful addition! Here is the product mentioned:

http://www.lcbo.com/lcbo/produ...ose-champagne/267039
Feuillatte Rosé is fine. Straightforward and no surprises or huge complexity but perfectly good. Certainly for $38 you won't go wrong.

I was always a fan of their single vineyard wines as few other houses do them and it was interesting to drink a Chouilly vs a Verzy Le Mensil. Palmes d'Or isn't worth the price (IMHO) but is good. Again I'd rather a bottle of MV Krug but....

Can't find either of these on the website. Could they have been consignment returns? Do you recall what they cost?

$69.25 for the Bruno Rocca. The David Arthur is around $100 if I recall correctly.

$100 is for 2011 David Arthur Three Acre Cab. It wasn't on the shelf yesterday, although I'm sure there's lots left in back. The 2011 David Arthur Meritaggio is ~$54.

And yes, these are all consignment wines that have been seized by the KGBO.
I wandered into the Laird St store yesterday to pick up some more of the 2010 Pecchenino Barolo San Giuseppe and saw them preparing to do a large number of product markdowns. Some of the better values I saw were:

NV Rotari Brut $11.75
NV Tarlant Brut Zero $35
NV Gardet Brut Premier Cru $39
NV Gobillard Tradition $33
NV Barons de Rothchild Brut $53
2010 Sociando Mallet $49
2010 Quinta Da Romaneira Touriga Nacional/Syrah $22
2011 Patrice Magni CdP $37
2011 Champy Pernand-Vergelesses $39

There were many others, including Riussec sauternes, and a bunch of Burgundies that I can't recall.

Great price on the Rotari. I'd buy me more of that, especially at that price.

Well you don't see them on the shelf any more, do you?

Edit: Not to discourage anyone, all of the above were available on the shelf (with the exception of the Rotari) when I left the store, and most of the discount tags had not been put up yet.

Andrew L. gave it a positive TN on CT, and the WS note is also positive. I like the Fleury style, so I picked up a bottle to try.

From WS: Rich, with hints of whole grain toast, date and honey lacing flavors of black currant, apple, candied orange zest and beeswax, all set on the fine, lightly creamy texture. Mouthwatering, with a lingering hint of fleur de sel. Drink now through 2020. (92)

There seem to be a lot of markdowns on champagne at the KGBO lately. The buyer must have over-indulged this past holiday period.

The tasting note above is not the most recent one on WS. Nor is the one shown on the KGBO web site. Here is the one from November 2014:

An elegant Champagne, with a delicate, creamy mousse and a subtle mesh of apple, white cherry, marzipan and biscuit notes, underscored by a streak of smoky minerality that lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2019. (AN91)

Seems worthwhile taking a flyer on a couple of bottles. Like OTW, I noticed the number of Champagne markdowns as well. Are there any others that anyone has tried, or is familiar with?
I'm also generally not much of a fleury fan. Not that there is anything wrong with the house but they seem quite variable. Having so many different cuvees adds to the confusion and variability. They are generally known for low dosage, so if that's your thing go for it, but I like a bit of dosage personally.

I trust AML's palate so this is probably pretty solid, but for the reasons mentioned above I'm a pass.

Thanks all for the input here. I'm tempted to try a single bottle just to see what it's like. I'm not sure where I sit re: low/no dosage as I still have lots to learn re: Champagne in general.
I had the Fleury 5 times in about 2 weeks and other than my last bottle being corked, I thought it was a nice wine. I think it is relatively true to the house style, in that the dosage is low, and the acids are quite brisk. If you have historically not enjoyed Fleury, you will probably not enjoy this wine.

In Champagne, you have to pay to play, and finding value, especially here, is quite difficult. Despite the markdown, I'm still not quite sure there is value here, but given the limited selection and our sinking currency, so as long as it is available, I will keep buying as I like the profile.

YMMV...

I'm all over the map with my Champagne preferences both in terms of dosage and taste profile. The only thing I don't enjoy is super high dosage. If it starts to hit double digits with the dosage, I tend to lose interest.

$75 for the Nicolas-Francois is a good deal for a really nice Champagne. Low dosage but more than 50% pinot (and at least partially barrel fermented I think) makes it big and rich but pretty racy as well. Pleases the autolytics crowd like me and the lemon curd guys as well.

Thanks Wine Canuck, I picked up some of the 2009 Saffredi; still 2 or 3 left if anyone wants them. Cheers,
Thought about the Monbousquet, but I didn't buy any of the 2010 when it came out for $69, so why buy a lesser vintage for the same price?

I almost looks like they went on W-S and set all prices at or near W-S low. Not sure there are any steals to be had here, but a few decent wines at fair market.

Not buying anything personally, would need to see a real deal.

If that is how they priced I think that might be a step in the right direction, though I suspect it is only coincidental.
I checked out some of the cheaper bottles and found some that seem to be good value, based on the winesearcher average price, at least (all costs Canadian dollars):

Château Pichon-Longueville-Baron 2006 Vintages $100/Winesearcher $150
Château Langoa-Barton 2006 Vintages $55/Winesearcher $79
Château Lagrange 2006 Vintages $50/Winesearcher $70

Their strategy seems to be continue to price them high to begin and then reduce to clear later if needed. Lately, it seems instead of a system-wide bin end sale, they've directed individual stores to clear stale inventory as they see fit.

I don't see any must buys on this Bordeaux sale but at least they've lowered the prices to be competitive with US market, which make them "good" deals by LCBO standards.

The Cos price seems favorable vis WS low once shipping and any duty is included.

Agreed. Hate to have excuses to open bottles, but maybe we should share cost on another bottle and pop it and see if worthy of keeping?

I'm up for splitting the cost and popping a bottle of 2006 Cos.
