keeping the labels clean

I always store my bottles laying down of course, but turn the bottle label to the side so that when it is pulled from the cellar (as I do not have them all tagged) they do not scratch or catch on the racking system.

That is about all I do other than leaving them alone.

Hugh Johnson recommends a light coating of hairspray to protect the label from moisture. This might be more of an English/European thing as many wines are stored in old musty cellars.

Too much work for me!

Really? I would be concerned that you could get a significant concentration of the hairspray odour in the cellar. Could eventually seep into the wine? Especially with a stand-alone cellar like I have.

For my long agers I actually wrap my bottles in newspaper and put a label on them with the name, appellation, estimated maturity, etc. For wines that I anticipate to be gifts, I wrap them with the front page of the newspaper on a specific persons birthday, and give that person the bottle a year or two later. I opened one a few weeks ago that I decided to drink myself with Bill Clinton's Presidential Acceptance Speech. Interesting reading, to say the least.
