Believe the hype. We had a fantastic meal here. The dining room is fairly large and the somewhat industrial interior ought to make this place conversation deficient but it was surprisingly not. ~7/8 full and we could hear each other talk though maybe not chew. Went with lots of small plates and "snacks" to give the menu a whirl and all were very good but 2 stood out: Squash blossom relleno and the carne asada toast. Wine list was good and eclectic with a just reasonable by-the-glass selection.

Nice!
BTW, was in Legoland with our little girls over the weekend. It was smokin'.
We went with friends a couple of months ago. Although mostly very good, there were a couple of misses on some of the plates (Jen and I thought a few were just OK/lackluster), the service was not great (fairly long delay between a couple of courses, too quick between others, and they forgot one of our cocktails) and it was pretty loud. Might have been an off night so I would reserve final judgement until after another trip. Based on this last experience, we won't be rushing back.

Could be a factor.

For reference, Jen and I have been to Market Del Mar twice in the last few months. Food and service were impeccable both times.

The exception that proves the rule. Whatever that means.

Possibly an exception, possibly the rule. Who knows Confused

I am in agreement with you that there is a lack of high end dining in San Diego (relative to the population). I also agree that the best "career" mangers and servers will gravitate toward markets where there are more opportunities (and mo money). This theoretically could lead to a shortage of quality food service professionals in our fine city. But lets face it (and with all due respect), managing a restaurant is not rocket science. There are plenty of quality and motivated individuals willing to work in the few high end establishments here. The example at Market would seem support that. I always encounter excellent service at some restaurants (Addison and Tapenade for example). Not so much at others (not exclusive to San Diego). Assuming a pattern and not an isolated incident, I would assume that Juniper and Ivy would be able to and strive to attract excellent front of the restaurant staff. But we all know what happens when you assume.... Wink

Just noticed the slight thread drift. Just wanted to add that I love Market and it is my go-to after a day at the Wild Animal Park. (I guess it is now called the "Safari Park"). I've had only terrific service as well as food there, though I have had to wait a few minutes past my reservation time on one occasion (but I consider that only a very minor nuisance).
