NV Charles Ellner Carte Blanche

2012 Vazart-Coquart Special Club VV

2021 Vieux Don Jon Châteauneuf Du Pape

2020 HdV Napa Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard

2020 Stag's Leap Viognier

2022 Bedrock Ode to Lulu

2019 St. Prefert Chateauneuf Du Pape

2019 K Vintners Viognier Powerline Vineyard (has become the 'house' white)

2013 Chateau d'Yquem

2010 Chateau Fleur Cardinale magnum

Liquid Farm Rosé of Mourvedre (Vogelzang Vineyard)

A lot of fun. Flavorful, but with more red apple, Asian pear, Mandarin orange stuff than strictly red fruits; which matches the pale salmon color as opposed to a richer pink of many other rosés. Seems to be emulating a French style profile, maybe Bandol, but it isn’t as serious a wine as the best Bandol rosés. Still, a lot of fun and a good drink @ $27/bottle.

For a memorial dinner for our dear friend who departed too early and whom we met in this forum, we raised a glass to you, vinaigre(Jean)  to cheers you in heaven.

In attendance, Vinaigre’s wife, C., Steve8, Impulse, KSC02, Unclejohn and yours truly had a great meal as Jean would have liked.

Wines were all excellent as was the food.

that is very sad to hear.

2019 Andre Perret Condrieu “Chery”

2019 Marcoux Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vielles Vignes

Perret wasn’t decanted but should have been. Pretty closed for the first 3+ hours. By hour 4 it was quite good though.

Marcoux was decanted for a couple of hours and needed it. I’ve had this wine a few times already and while I adored it last night, it fell short of the previous experiences. Probably shutting down for a few years. I’d wait another 6 years before opening another.

2020 Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée A Tempo

2005 Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal

2016 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard

The Pegau was *wild*.  At times it was maybe the best smelling wine I’ve ever had.  It seemed to go from absolutely exuberant to shy from sip to sip.  But when showing off, the nose was a smorgasbord of fleshy yellow and orange fruits — peaches, nectarines, guava, pineapple, passion fruit — along with peach fuzz, orchids, leafy green herbs like tarragon, and dry honey and honey blossoms / floral honey (and after reading another review, I’ll add quince and macadamia).  And all in a non-cloying nor flabby package.  The palate did not measure up and seemed somewhat alcoholic at first, though after a couple of hours in the decanter, coming to a cool room temperature of about 66 F, the palate improved notably and showed muted versions of the nose, with a predominately dry honey and nectarine palate and a pineapple finish.  Unlike Beaucastel’s Roussanne Vielles Vignes, which can somewhat masquerade as a white Hermitage, this is CDP through-and-through.  One of the best dry whites I’ve ever had.  Probably not top 5, but maybe top 10.

The Chapoutier was off.  We couldn’t really figure out what was wrong with it, it didn’t seem cooked nor corked, but it was just all acetone and unpleasant, so we opened something that wouldn’t need decanting…

The Rhys was predictably excellent.  Nothing really more to say.  Rhys has become my favorite Pinot producer outside of Burgundy and, while I don’t think they need a lot of age, they do benefit from a few years and the 2016s are coming online now.

On the flight back from England, I enjoyed a British sparkler.  Balfour Noir, Brut NV.  Red apple nose, with strawberry and peach.  Pale rose in color.  First experience with British wine of any kind.

Several British sparkling wines make it into the Chicago market, and I’ve tasted a few. They were pretty good, but also come at the same price point as actual Champagne.
