July 2018 - What Are You Drinking?

July 3 and nobody has started this already?

On Sunday night with VinT, Mimik, Impulse and our better halves

2002 Pol Roger, Champagne, Blanc de Blancs

2010 Louis Michel, Chablis, Vaudesir

2010 William Fevre, Chablis, Les Clos

2007 Domaine Tortochot, Charmes-Chambertin

2007 Cecile Tremblay, Chapelle-Chambertin

1991 Casa Ferreirinha, Barca Velha

2005 Clerico, Barolo, Ciabot Mentin Ginestra

All wines showed well. Because of the heat, I have to say I enjoyed the whites most. Really regret not having bought a bunch of the Pol Roger. Really excellent Champagne. Very enjoyable dinner at Prince with good friends.

Original Post

Enjoyed with some friends as we bbq'd some steaks and enjoyed a classic SD sunset...

2013 Clos Pepe Estate Chardonnay Barrel Fermented

2015 Jean-Luc Jamet Cotes du Rhone Blanc

2008 Regusci Patriarch

2012 Mascot

My friends preferred the Mascot, but the Regusci was my favorite of the night.  The Jamet cotes du rhone blanc was really nice too.

How was this? The SAQ stopped bringing this wine in quite some time ago. I remember a bottle of the 97 being really delicious, but that was also quite some time ago.

Very enjoyable, Steve. Firm, tart black fruit, some earth and tobacco, vibrant acidity and drying tannins. The black fruit and tannins reminded me of a Cali Diamond Mountain cab.

I wonder if the drying tannins will outlive the fruit, but right now they're balanced. The major drawback was the short finish. It dropped off a cliff at the end.

2006 Muga Prado Enea rioja(great wine-in a good  place right now)

2016 Di Meo Greco di Trufo ( good clean but not over complex-bit pricey for what’s in the bottle)

Nice lineup. How was the Leroy? And the 01 LdH Reserva?

2006 Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Special Club - drinking well, great qpr
2001 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso - bruiser of a wine but went well with ribs. Tough to call this out as 100% cab franc

2005 Clape Cornas - YES! shocked to how well this is drinking.
2007 Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT - another complete bruiser but wow is it good. Definitely stand this for a few days as the appearance was cloudy
2001 Sportoletti Rosso Villa Fidelia - shockingly 2 out of 4 choose this a wotn

i have no idea how to un-bold the first 2 -

Out of curiosity, why the shock?  We had an 06 a few weeks ago, and I thought it was drinking really well.

I thought it could potentially be tight and holding back because of it's youth.  Glad I stocked up.

2013 Paul Lato Chardonnay Le Souvenir Sierra Madre Vineyard

2013 La Follette Chardonnay Sangiocomo Vineyard

Was this the La Source bottling? If so, curious about your thoughts. Thanks.

Nope. The base bottling. Lovely flavour profile although a bit more concentration wouldn't have hurt.

This was my last of 4 2001 LDH and have to be honest it felt a bit tired, more acidic and less balanced than prior bottles  despite giving it over an hr of air and drinking over another hr. Interestingly it was a bottle i actually bought at the winery 5 exactly five years ago.

The Leroy was solid, citrus and mineral but nothing overly special. Barely met expectations.

For MRs. VeV's bday weekend:

2007 Carlisle Petite Sirah Yorkville Highlands - black as night.  Big fruit, licorice.  Good complexity and balance for a wine of this stature.  Great with ribs.

1996 Dehlinger Syrah - seemed a little tired relative to previous bottles.   Tons of bacon & smoke but still a bit muted, hints of oxidation creeping in.

1978 Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon California - Light ruby, sandalwood, brine/olive cranberry.  Beautiful & elegant without showing any signs of tiring.  A far cry from the current idea of cali cabs I wish they were still made in this style.  Will never be as complex as an older vintage bordeaux but i don't think this was ever intended to be.
