Mangiare, how did the 97 CastelGiocondo show for you? I have a few 97 Brunellos that I probably need to check on. Steve8 apparently had a Poggio Oro that didn't show well.quote:Originally posted by mangiare:

Good to hear on the Fuligni showing so well. Would you still recommend holding off on drinking? I didn't plan on opening my lone bottle soon (although I might crack the normale in the coming months), but curious to hear more on it.

A great evening indeed. Steve 8 neglected to mention that this was a Birthday celebration honoring both himself and Mimik.
Happy Birthday guys!

My WOTNs:
1995 Chateau Valandraud, St. Emilion
1999 Chateau Pavie, St.Emilion (magnum)(double-splash decanted 2 hrs previous)
2001 Fuligni, BdM, Riserva
The Fuligni Reserva showed beautifully. Good to go (Impulse, did you splash decant previous to arriving?). If I had one bottle, it's your call. It showed beautifully. Will it improve? Likely...a bit. Splitting hairs likely, IMHO. I have a number of these and look forward to enjoying one every handfull of years. A long life ahead for this fantastic wine.

It was good but not great. This is the second bottle I've tried in the past 2 weeks and this one definitely showed better. I unfortunately decanted the first one.
If I had to... 90points and drinking from now to 2014ish. there is definitely enough fruit and acidity to carry it for another few years however don't expect much improvement imho

Thanks mangiare. I know I have this wine, Fuligni Riserva, Lisini Ugalaia, and Salvioni left in the 1997's. I should probably check in on these although I suspect the Fuligni could still use a bit more time, but I could be wrong on that.quote:Originally posted by mangiare:quote:Originally posted by max:Mangiare, how did the 97 CastelGiocondo show for you? W+A,
Considering your last offline involved a selection of 1945 Bordeaux, I am really curious as to what you consider a "major" offline??

Likely a vertical of Mollydooker sparkling Shiraz!

2008 Eric Kent Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Small Town
2004 Yering Yarrabank Traditional Sparkling Wine
1976 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir
2005 Scholium Project Babylon Tenbrink Vineyard
All wines were good with the Yering being an excellent qpr. Good beading with flavors covering both citrus and riper fruits.
The Hanzell was a complete surprise with it's dark color and only so slight bricking. It opened up more throughout the evening. Definately no mistaking this for Burgundy. Not much on the nose but the palate showed dark fruit with a spicey overlay. Saved a glass for day two and held it's ground with no change.
The Scholium was all about SWEET fruit. Sweet on the nose, sweet on the palate. It pushed the border of overblown but somehow managed to stay on this side of balance. It didn't cross the line, in my opinion, of some of the Aussie fruit bombs I've had. The 16.1% alcohol stays well hidden. My complaint on day 1 was there didn't seem to be enough acidity to support the fruit. On day two, the acidity came forward for a more balanced attack that I felt made for a complete wine.
