I'm (hopefully) selling my car tonight. I asked the guy who is buying it to bring a cashier's cheque and to tell me which bank he got it from so that I can call them and confirm that it's good.

For the past hour and a half I've been trying to get someone to check it.

First off, the BofA phone system is designed to prevent you from getting through to a real person. I eventually found that the best trick is to lie; find the selection that says you've had your card stolen. At least that way you get to speak to a person.

I've been passed around from department to department. I've made calls that weren't answered - for the past 5 minutes I've been calling this same number (I suspect they have CallerID and recognise my number).

All I'm trying to do is to confirm that this cheque isn't a forgery. Is that really so much to ask?

I bank with a local credit union - TechCU. They have been absolutely fantastic in the 12+ years I've been with them.

Frankly I trusted the guy but these days it makes sense to cover every eventuality. He faxed me through a copy of the cheque; when I got to speak to someone in person there was no problem. I was in and out of the branch in 5 minutes. I can't understand why they jerked me around so much on the phone.

I had to sell my Integra (and Ali's beloved MX5) because with two kids we've been forced to become minivan owners Frown

Dave, try calling the customer service number jmch75 gave you. If the menu gives you grief, try hitting zero a bunch of times. Always the most efficient way to get through to a live person on an automated phone system.

If you already knew this, please disregard this message, which will self-destruct in five seconds. Cool

I tried that. It didn't work. After a while it hangs up on you.

I found that by saying "operator" it said "I'll transfer you to an associate. To assist in routing your call, please enter your 10 digit account number". And that got me nowhere.

According to that IVR hacks site the best way through is to press *33 0# 0# 0 1
What is this, a bank phone system or a Nintendo cheat?

I left BofA while in college. Had an account with them since I was 10 and had a paper route. Roommate bounced a check to me, which caused my check to the landlord to bounce. My account was $20 short of covering everything, and BofA bounced the check. I had never been overdrawn. Ever. Once my roommate paid me and I put the $$ in the account, I walked in to the nearest branch, asked to see the manager, explained to him what happened and closed the account. Haven't looked back....
If you want to get even with a bank, don't close the account. Keep it open and inactive with a tiny amount of money in it. They hate that.

But possibly the best comeback ever was this:

A British guy called Michael Howard got hit by overdraft charges of about $40 for a $20 overdraft, so he changed his name by deed poll to Yorkshire Bank PLC Are Fascist Bastards. He then demanded a cheque book in his new name. Just as funny was the fact that the journalist who covered the story kept referring to him as "Mr. Bastards" throughout.

I guess we can't avoid communication with the banks these days. Everything is heading towards the cashless society and i think it is going to happen one day. In case you are not happy with your particular bank, you can always change it. Here are the contacts of ameris bank customer service https://ameris-bank.pissedcons...ustomer-service.html for example, the one we deal with for the last 4 years already.
