Ok, don't laugh, and here's why:

For the oldsters and aging hippies out there (you know who you are), you get to "play along" with classic tunes like Thin Lizzy's "Bad Reputation" and Sabbath's "War Pigs," plus some new classics like "Woman" by Wolfmother.

For the youngsters, it's a great way to introduce pure "rock," that gets them away from the idiotic junk that's on so many of the modern radio stations today. I love watching my 13 year old nephew jamming to "Institutionalized" by the Suicidal Tendencies and say how cool the tune is.

Ok, who plays one of these games, or the similar Rock Band? Fess up. Me, I play GH II every couple of weeks, and can just barely finish a couple of songs on the hard level.

i've got a few songs down at expert .. but with all teh scrolling my eyes hurt and the ceiling appears to scroll too after a bit.

haven't played in 3 months =)
My niece and nephew have Guitar Hero and love beating uncle Glenn every time I come over. It is actually a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. I get scores in the 90%+ on medium but any level higher and I’m toast.
My son is amazing at both Guitar Hero and Rock Band. He five stars almost every song at the expert level. I get nauseous just watching all the notes fly across the screen at that level. I'm not sure how anyone can actually see all of them.
My son has played it, and he started getting interested in "Rock and Roll", so I introduced him to some older bands.

He's now a huge fan of Guns & Roses. He doesn't understand why they broke up...

He likes VanHalen as well, along with Steppenwolf, Aerosmith, and a few assorted others.
Gotta bring a smile to your face when the kiddies start going for the older tunes. Now if they'd only make a DJ Hero to introduce the kids to Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, Tribe Called Quest. . ., but I digress.

My nephew showed me some youtube footage of guys cranking away at the expert level, getting perfect scores. Wild, just wild. If I can get a couple more tunes finished at the hard level, I'll feel pretty good. Expert, probably not in this lifetime.

I have seen Rock Band, but haven't played it yet. Will have to pick it up for the PS3 at some point.
I don't have Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but I'll play them at friends' places from time to time. I can definitely do medium at 95-100%, but as was mentioned the jump to Hard with the orange button is a difficult one. Can't quite get that one.
These kids need to save their pennies, and go buy a beat up old Stratocaster at a pawn shop like every other generation before them. These kids should be out shooting hoops or tossing the pig skin around instead of sitting inside, eating oatmeal cream pies and playing football on X-Box. Maybe I am just ranting because I suck at Guitar Hero. But damn it, those songs are harder to play on expert that they are on an actual guitar!

They're back together and have a new album in rock band 2.

If you just talk about strumming yea, but some of the solos really get the "feel" of playing a real guitar.

as with shooting hoops outside, I must admit a frustration with certain people growing up in my parents neighborhood.

We used to play every day after school, but then the neighbors complained that we made too much noise in the park and enacted a park ordinance that required kids to get a park pass. Then they tore down the basketball courts and put in some benches instead. ... sigh...

I'm sure for some kids, Guitar Hero/Rock Band are springboards to wanting to play the real thing. I play three instruments (clarinet/sax/trumpet) reasonably well, and would be stoked to see kids go for Jazz Hero, with fake horns and Coltrane, Brubeck and Corea tunes.

Not quite "back together". It's Axl Rose and a bunch of other musicians (Axl owns the name). No Slash, no Izzy, no Duff, no Matt. Just Axl.

That said, I enjoy myself a game of Guitar Hero quite regularly. Though I'm kinda pissed that I didn't wait for Rock Band as the drums are a blast to play and the track list blows GH out of the water.

Oh yea, got Wii a couple months ago and tracked down GH3, and lovin' it. A tough day at the office and on the road, come home and put GH on play "One" by Metallica or "The Seeker" by the Who and the stress melts away. Although I wonder what it would have been like if this game came out 30 years ago? Instead of having a glass of wine or scotch as I play, more likely it would have been JD and living a very self delusional life Big Grin Right now I'm getting mid 90's on medium, but as soon as that orange button on hard comes up I'm boo'ed off stage pretty quick. My wife thinks it's pretty funny watching me try to recapture those glory days, I was a pretty good air guitarist in my day Big Grin
I love Guitar Hero, but I'm crap at it. I can handle EASY mode pretty well; usually get about 90% notes, but I cannot handle anything above that. I seem to have no control over my little finger.

Well...that would be a useless game. At least with GH, you emulate real talent Smile

I've never played, but my 10 yr old son loves it and it has gotten him interested in Rock music, especially stuff I grew up on...similar to Rothko

I think they allowed music in the park in Stalin's time.

Nah...I don't win. Its not a competition to determine you have bad taste in music. Eek Big Grin Big Grin

And yes Indy...I'm joking...you are quite the personality!!!!

When I'm in Indy...I vow to get an Iron Maiden T-shirt on you....not that I'll ever visit Indy unless a long lost aunt that leaves me a few Mil makes me!!
My brother has both Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and I enjoy them both. Favorite songs include any Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer.
