It's nice that they attached the airport to that wonderful shopping center.

Indeed. As we entered the airport, I thought to myself "This a new twist: Enter Through the Gift Shop".

Aw, c'mon...you haven't lived until you have tailgated in 12 degree weather, eating burgers and brats and drinking beer at 8:30 in the morning!

I did do this 2 winters ago in Chicago in 8 degree weather... I actually had a blast, but once is enough for me!

I'm like you. I love a little winter, then we fly home. Cool
Had a great time in Chicago. Went to a Cubs game on Friday that actually turned out to be a really fun game with the Cubs pulling out a win late in the game. We did the architectural boat tour Saturday morning that was way more fun than I was expecting. I usually avoid touristy stuff like that, but I would highly recommend this tour. The rest of the time was spent walking around and getting a better feel for the city, drinking, eating, drinking, more drinking and eating again. Chicago is one my favorite cities and one of the few places not on the west coast I would consider moving to for the right opportunity.

Glenn, if/when you ever make it back and have some extra time, us locals would love to schedule an off-line with you! Glad you had a good time. A big +1 on the architectural boat tour; I did that a few years back and it was awesome. Sorry you had to spend a day at that poor excuse for a baseball stadium, though. Wink

Would love to do an offline next time I’m there. Seems like you guys have a great group out there.

You are confusing Dallas with Houston. W&A gets to enjoy the occasional ice storm up in Dallas.

philadelphia airport...leaving for italy in 1.5 hrs. Thanks to Board-O, Wine+Art, Lentini, and a variety of others for restaurant recommendations, I have about 25 places to eat in Florence and only 4 nights. But, I'll manage.

Board-O

We just ate at Chez Yvonne near the Cathedral (amazing cathedral by the way, how did they ever engineer such beauty, detail and size in the 1400s?) and it was very good, including the real choucroute! The Pinot Gris was a great pairing and the duck fat potatoes to die for! Very different cuisine from Loire but oh so good!

You are right... many amazing cathedrals in Europe, but this is a very special place indeed.

Sounds like you are having a great trip.
It does sound great to me. We stayed close to the cathedral at Hotel Gutenberg. This was one of only two places where we stayed only one night, and our dinner was the tasting menu at Beurehiesel. I hope to return next summer and try the choucroute.
Florence, Italy. Had a very good meal last night. Wild boar with polenta after a ribolleto. Taking a day trip to Sienna today--at least that is the plan.
Where did you dine?

The way the Yankees and Orioles are playing, your guys could be tied for first by the end of the weekend.
What tasting appointments do you have?

If you have the time, Distillerie Guillon near Louvois makes a peaty single malt Scotch-type whiskey.

Last night at a place on the other side of the Arno. Cinghiale Bianco. Very nice inside and small. Place was packed with lots of Italians and tourists. They had Ornellaia, Sassicaia and other super Tuscans, and a host of other wines. Tonight, we're eating at the Golden View, upon the recommendation of Wine+Art. Went to Sienna today by bus. Bus broke down on the way back.

I was planning to visit Pommery to start. I haven't booked much as the family has seen its share of tasting rooms at this point. If you have any must-visit houses I would appreciate your input. We are going to Reims tomorrow to see the cathedral and other sites along with tasting some champs!
Favorites over the last two years were Philiponnat in Mareuil-sur-Ay, Vazart-Coquart in Chouilly, and Henri Goutorbe in Ay. Pommery is definitely worth a visit for its beauty and the great tour of the cellars along with the artwork. Favorite restaurant is Le Vieux Puits in Ay, but our special dinners were picnics in the courtyard of our hotel in Ay with provisions from Charcuterie Matthieu.

Please report about your meal at Golden View. I will also be dining there in a few weeks based on W+A rec as well.

I hope Irwin explored their wine list. There are some excellent wines to be enjoyed.

I also hope he tried all of their dried meats and excellent cheeses.

Full disclosure... Longboarder turned me on to this place.
I just printed off 16 pages of The Golden View wine list to look at on the plane over. Impressive selection to say the least. Some prices seem stupid and others are good. We are having lunch their the day we arrive after visiting a museum.

IW,

Their wines from Friuli were excellent and fairly priced when we were there this Summer. They also had several wines not on the list.

Their DOP olive oils were excellent as well.

Do you need a casual lunch spot in Florence?
