Great Lyrics

Are there any songs with some lines that really catch your ear and are very memorable?

One of mine is from American Woman by The Guess Who...

I don't need your war machines,
I don't need your ghetto scenes,
Coloured lights can hypnotize,
Sparkle someone else eyes...

It really captures the essence of someone from a neighboring country that is both drawn to and repelled by it's towering neighbor.

Others?

I don't know that they're great lyrics, but I always liked some of the lines in Stairway to Heaven -- you know sometimes words have two meanings, etc.

Clapton's Tears in Heaven may be a bit shmaltzy to some, but its lyrics have always resonated with me.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen.
Ah, I just slapped myself in the head: almost everything Bob Dylan wrote in the first half of his career. How could I forget that? Doesn't even need the music.

I guess the same could be said of Leonard Cohen; in fact in his case the music might almost detract from the lyrics.
"Smile while your heart is breaking."

"Katy lied, you could see it in her eyes."

"Ain't it funny how time slips away."

About half of what Bob Dylan wrote before died and was replaced by a nzumbe.

I could go on for thousands of lines, as long as can stay awake, or sleep.
.
From an obscure band, Kitchens of Distinction, I have found both the music and the lyrics to "Elephantine" intriguing...

Sharpen your stunted tusks in this city night.
Yesterday a wide-eyed stabbing
Tonight a crowbar fight a desperate fight.

Sleeping alone and drugged
frightened fat and wet
I swear I'm chasing sanity
Lost easy laughter and forgetting.

I'm going south
To feed the animals
I'm going south
Become elephantine.

Elephant in drought-struck shock
is trumpeting her grief.
Stays with her dying baby trunk
stroking dry and persued
She dies too.

How can I justify wailing at these walls?
Every great nation ends up deserving war.
The lyrics and music of Sting's "Children's Crusade" have always captivated me as well...

Young men, soldiers, Nineteen Fourteen
Marching through countries they'd never seen
Virgins with rifles, a game of charades
All for a Children's Crusade

Pawns in the game are not victims of chance
Strewn on the fields of Belgium and France
Poppies for young men, death's bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed

The children of England would never be slaves
They're trapped on the wire and dying in waves
The flower of England face down in the mud
And stained in the blood of a whole generation

Corpulent generals safe behind lines
History's lessons drowned in red wine
Poppies for young men, death's bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed
All for a Children's Crusade

The children of England would never be slaves
They're trapped on the wire and dying in waves
The flower of England face down in the mud
And stained in the blood of a whole generation

Midnight in Soho, Nineteen Eighty-four
Fixing in doorways, opium slaves
Poppies for young men, such bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed
All for a Children's Crusade
Lastly (for tonight!), while the lyrics of Graham Parker's "Haunted Episodes" may seem a little sappy, they are perfect for the simple and lovely music that accompanies them...

I wonder what you are thinkin'
Under the rooftops there
Pullin tangles from your hair
I wonder if the water you're drinkin'
Comes from a purer stream
The one where sunlight gleams
Things round here dont get any clearer
Stuff that once seemed in reach
is not any nearer

I wonder if that house is still standin'
or did they knock it flat
Well thats progress that's that
I wonder who was more demanding
We were just young I guess
neither would settle for less
Still it's not a whole life story is it?
Its just a page I turned and
there you were in it

I wonder how you are farin'
not sliding down a slope
Takin the knocks I hope
I wonder where your eyes are starin'
Not into some emptiness
into someone's I guess
But that still won't make things any clearer
People seem to drift apart
instead of getting nearer

I wonder what you are doin'
under the evening sky
Watchin' your life go by
I wonder if that place is in ruins
and all the doors are closed
Thats just the way it goes
I wonder what there is worth keepin'
from haunted episodes
That briefly woke us from sleepin'

Lyrically, "Chimes of Freedom" is my favorite song. By far. There is a reason he has the reputation he does.

You sound like my Con Law II professor. Cool

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw you did not list Dylan and Cohen. Eek

+1, and Joni Mitchell.
Stoneface dog, swirling fog, gates open on the dark dark night
Standing stone, skull and bone, dead witness to an unseen fight
Beat the drum, beat the drum, beat forever on the endless march
Stricken dumb, Cut and run, someone is screaming and the sky is dark

Sword and shield, bone and steel, rictus grin
Deaf forever to the battles din

March or croak, flame and smoke, burn forever in eternal pain
Charge and fall, bugle call, bone splinter in the driving rain
Horses scream, Viking dream, drowned heroes in a lake of blood
Armoured fist, severed wrist, broken spears in a sea of mud

Deaf forever, Stone Deaf Forever

Mother earth, mother earth enfold you in her cold embrace
Sinking down, killing ground, worm crawling on your cold white face
Win or lose, nought to choose, all men are equal when their memory fades
No one knows, friends or foes, if Valhalla lies beyond the grave
I am the one, Orgasmatron, the outstretched grasping hand
My image is of agony, my servants rape the land
Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousand years of misery, of torture in my name
Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the law
My name is called religion, sadistic, sacred whore.

I twist the truth, I rule the world, my crown is called deceit
I am the emperor of lies, you grovel at my feet
I rob you and I slaughter you, your downfall is my gain
And still you play the sycophant and revel in your pain
And all my promises are lies, all my love is hate
I am the politician, and I decide your fate

I march before a martyred world, an army for the fight
I speak of great heroic days, of victory and might
I hold a banner drenched in blood, I urge you to be brave
I lead you to your destiny, I lead you to your grave
Your bones will build my palaces, your eyes will stud my crown
For I am Mars, the god of war, and I will cut you down.
Great topic!

My all time favorite lyric is from a Bruce Cockburn song “Call It Democracy.”

The section I like best is…

Sinister cynical instrument
Who makes the gun into a sacrament --
The only response to the deification
Of tyranny by so-called "developed" nations'
Idolatry of ideology

I never thought anyone would work “idolatry of ideology” into a song lyric, but then Bruce did it!

The whole stinking song gets more apt every year, and it’s 25 years old.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3SQkUSe-ng

The whole song is...

Padded with power here they come
International loan sharks backed by the guns
Of market hungry military profiteers
Whose word is a swamp and whose brow is smeared
With the blood of the poor

Who rob life of its quality
Who render rage a necessity
By turning countries into labour camps
Modern slavers in drag as champions of freedom

Sinister cynical instrument
Who makes the gun into a sacrament --
The only response to the deification
Of tyranny by so-called "developed" nations'
Idolatry of ideology

North South East West
Kill the best and buy the rest
It's just spend a buck to make a buck
You don't really give a flying fuck
About the people in misery

IMF dirty MF
Takes away everything it can get
Always making certain that there's one thing left
Keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

See the paid-off local bottom feeders
Passing themselves off as leaders
Kiss the ladies shake hands with the fellows
Open for business like a cheap bordello

And they call it democracy
And they call it democracy
And they call it democracy
And they call it democracy

See the loaded eyes of the children too
Trying to make the best of it the way kids do
One day you're going to rise from your habitual feast
To find yourself staring down the throat of the beast
They call the revolution

IMF dirty MF
Takes away everything it can get
Always making certain that there's one thing left
Keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

Going more popish, I like bits of some songs where the rest of the song leaves me flat, but the lyrical bit shines.

Sneaking cool references into songs pleases me….

“Just like Pagliacci did
I keep my sorrows hid”

And also…

"It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabokov"

Really, Pagliacci and Nabokov in pop lyrics? Well done!

I will also go with Bob Dylan still being the bomb. “Spirit on the Water” is killer, as is “Mississippi” (the version from disc one of Tell Tale Signs is worth the price of the whole album.)

I like this little line about his woman…

"Can't explain
The sources of this hidden pain
You burned your way into my heart
You got the key to my brain."
Damn!

Forgot my favorite Dylan lyric:

"Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
To see you"

That just about sums up the biggest f**k you, ever.

Positively Fourth Street is so good, I spent years looking for bootlegs of Positively First Street, Positively Second Street, and Positively Third Street; all the while hoping he'd get around to writing Positively Fifth Street!
A couple ditties from Pearl Jam

These speak to me on how I live my life

I know I was born and I know that I'll die
The in between is mine

and

I'll do what I want but do it responsibly

A larger snippet in context

"I Am Mine"

The selfish, they're all standing in line
Faithing and hoping to buy themselves time
Me, I figure as each breath goes by
I only own my mind

The North is to South what the clock is to time
There's east and there's west and there's everywhere life
I know I was born and I know that I'll die
The in between is mine

I am mine

"Do the Evolution"

Admire me, admire my home
Admire my son, he's my clone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
This land is mine, this land is free
I'll do what I want, but do it responsibly
It's evolution, baby

For me, the best PJ line is ..

'I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star,
In somebody else's sky but why, why, why can't it be mine...'
In light of recent economic events, these lyrics strike me as appropriate for today (even though the Dow finished slightly up today):

When Black Friday comes
I'll stand down by the door
And catch the grey men when they
Dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes
I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out
I'll be on the road
When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be
Don't let it fall on me
When Black Friday comes
I'll fly down to Muswellbrook
Gonna strike all the big red words
From my little black book
Gonna do just what I please
Gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed
All the kangaroos
When Black Friday comes I'll be on that hill
You know I will

When Black Friday comes
I'm gonna dig myself a hole
Gonna lay down in it 'til
I satisfy my soul
Gonna let the world pass by me
The Archbishop's gonna sanctify me
And if he don't come across
I'm gonna let it roll
When Black Friday comes
I'm gonna stake my claim
I'll guess I'll change my name
One of my favorite Elton John songs (lyrics by Bernie Taupin)

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City
Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord there's people out there like you
I thank the Lord there's people out there like you
chorus
While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light
This Broadway's got
It's got a lot of songs to sing
If I knew the tunes I might join in
I'll go my way alone
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown in New York City
Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found
Hey, I'm your life
I'm the one who takes you there
Hey, I'm your life
I'm the one who cares
They, they betray
I'm your only true friend now
They, they'll betray
I'm forever there
I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel, sad but true
I'm your dream, mind astray
I'm your eyes while you're away
I'm your pain while you repay
You know it's sad but true, sad but true

You, you're my mask
You're my cover, my shelter
You, you're my mask
You're the one who's blamed
Do, do my work
Do my dirty work, scapegoat
Do, do my deeds, for you're the one who's shamed
I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel, sad but true
I'm your dream, mind astray
I'm your eyes while you're away
I'm your pain while you repay
You know it's sad but true, sad but true

I'm your dream
I'm your eyes
I'm your pain
I'm your dream (I'm your dream)
I'm your eyes (I'm your eyes)
I'm your pain (I'm your pain)
You know it's sad but true

Hate, I'm your hate
I'm your hate when you want love
Pay, pay the price
Pay for nothing's fair
Hey, I'm your life
I'm the one who took you here
Hey, I'm you life and I no longer care
I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel, sad but true
I'm your truth, telling lies
I'm your reasoned alibis
I'm inside open your eyes
I'm you, sad but true
A short, simple lyric that I think is a classic turn of phrase to say someone is a douche back

"It's safe to say he never met Will Rogers."

And one of my favorites:

It was late one night on a Kentucky highway, up ahead on the horizon,
It was there before my eyes, I saw the glowin’ cross of Jesus Christ.
I saw Jesus on the grille, of a south-bound Peterbilt,
Catchin’ bugs between his teeth, and glowin’ for everyone to see.
He don’t stop at those toll-booths, the state troopers let him roll on thru,
Folks stop and stare at his long flowing hair, and his gold-capped tooth.
I saw Jesus on the Grille, rolling down the Interstate,
And I know we won’t be late no darling, with the potentate of hauling freight,

Talkin’ Jesus, riding on the Grille, Talkin’ Jesus blessing every road-kill.
Talkin’ Jesus giving points for good behavior,
I’ve been redeemed by the 75 mph savior, tell it mommy now.

I saw him down at a roadside diner, with a soybean burger and a side of fries,
A big ol’ glass of chocolate milk, and a slice of apple pie.
"I was so pleased to be informed of this, that I ran fifty red lights in His honor."

"I come awake
with a gift for womankind.
You're still asleep,
but the gift don't seem to mind."

"Tequila!"

"Strolling down the highway with my shoes in my hand,
I don't much, I'm a quiet man.
Beauty and silence both run deep,
and I'm running like crazy while you are asleep."
Some powerful lyrics of the Easter Uprising of 1916: listen here.

The Foggy Dew
As down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I,
Their armed lines of marching men
In squadrons passed me by.
No pipe did hum, no battle drum
Did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus' bells o'er the Liffey swells
Rang out in the foggy dew.

Right proudly high in Dublin town
Hung they out a flag of war.
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky
Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar.
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through;
While Brittania's Huns with their long-range guns
Sailed in through the foggy dew.

The bravest fell, and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Easter-tide
In the springing of the year.
While the world did gaze with deep amaze
At those fearless men but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew.

And back through the glen I rode again
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see more
But to and fro
In my dreams I go
And I kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled
Oh, glorious dead
When you fell in the foggy dew
Hmmmm

Everyone is trying to get to the bar.
The name of the bar, the bar is called Heaven.
The band in Heaven plays my favorite song.
They play it once again, they play it all night long.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

There is a party, everyone is there.
Everyone will leave at exactly the same time.
Its hard to imagine that nothing at all
could be so exciting, and so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

When this kiss is over it will start again.
It will not be any different, it will be exactly
the same.
It's hard to imagine that nothing at all
could be so exciting, could be so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,
I bless the light that lights on you believe me.
And though you're gone,
You're with me every single day, believe me.

Days I'll remember all my life,
Days when you can't see wrong from right.
You took my life,
But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me,
But it's all right,
Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me.

I wish today could be tomorrow,
The night is dark,
It just brings sorrow anyway.

Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.

Days I'll remember all my life,
Days when you can't see wrong from right.
You took my life,
But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me,
But it's all right,
Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me.
Days.

Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,
I bless the light that shines on you believe me.
And though you're gone,
You're with me every single day, believe me.
Days.
People take pictures of the Summer,
Just in case someone thought they had missed it,
And to proved that it really existed.
Fathers take pictures of the mothers,
And the sisters take pictures of brothers,
Just to show that they love one another.

You can't picture love that you took from me,
When we were young and the world was free.
Pictures of things as they used to be,
Don't show me no more, please.

People take pictures of each other,
Just to prove that they really existed,
Just to prove that they really existed.
People take pictures of each other,
And the moment to last them for ever,
Of the time when they mattered to someone.
Ow, My Face :

I'm glad your happy
watching my pain
burning crop circles
on my soul's razor brain
we had no love scene
but you cut to the chase
you're choppin' off my nose
to spite my face
ow, my nose
ow, my face
ow, my nose
ow, my face
oooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

By Mystik Spiral, the greatest band that never was.
Most Steely Dan lyrics are memorable.

Great lyrics, and in a much lighter vein, are "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". The baseball analogy is especially brilliant.

I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Parking by the lake
And there was not another car in sight
And I never had a girl
Looking any better than you did
And all the kids at school
They were wishing they were me that night

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C'mon, hold on tight
C'mon, hold on tight

Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light

[Girl:]
Ain't no doubt about it we were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

[Both:]
Ain't no doubt about it
Baby got to go out and shout it
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed

[Boy:]
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Baby don'cha hear my heart
You got it drowing out the radio
I've been waiting so long
For you to come along and have some fun
And I gotta let you know
No you're never gonna regret it
So open up your eyes, I got a big surprise
It'll feel all right
Well I wanna make you motor run

And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good, it never felt so right
And we're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
Glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife
C'mon, Hold on tight
C'mon, Hold on tight

[Both:]
Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night
I can see paradise by the dashboard light
Paradise by the dashboard light

You got to do what you can
And let Mother Nature do the rest
Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely

We're gonna go all the way tonight
We're gonna go all the way
And tonight's the night

[Radio Broadcast:]
OK, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here
Two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth
There's the wind-up, and there it is
A line shot up the middle, look at him go
This boy can really fly
He's rounding first and really turning it on now
He's not letting up at all, he's gonna try for second
The ball is bobbled out in the center
And here's the throw and what a throw
He's gonna slide in head first
Here he comes, he's out
No, wait, safe, safe at second base
This kid really makes things happen out there
Batter steps up to the plate
Here's the pitch, he's going
Amd what a jump he's got
He's trying for third
Here's the throw
It's in the dirt, safe a third
Holw cow, stolen base
He's taking a pretty big lead out there
Almost daring them to pick him off
The pitcher glances over, winds-up and it's bunted
Bunted down the third base line
The suicide squeeze is on
Here he comes, squeeze play, it's gonna be close
Here's the throw, here's the play at the plate
Holy cow, I think he's gonna make it

[Girl:]
Stop right there
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further

Do you love me
Will you love me forever
Do you need me
Will you make me so happy
For the rest of my life
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife
Do you love me
Will you love me forever
Do you need me
Will you make me so happy
For the rest of my life
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife

I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me
Will you love me forever

[Boy:]
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning

Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning

[Girl:]
I gotta know right now
Do you love me
Will you love me forever
Do you need me
Will you make me so happy
For the rest of my life
Will you take me away
And will you make me your wife
I gotta know right now
Before we go any further
Do you love me
And will you love me forever

[Boy:]
Let me sleep on it
Baby, baby let me sleep on it
Let me sleep on it
And I'll give you an answer in the morning
Let me sleep on it

[Girl:]
Will you love me forever

[Boy:]
Let me sleep on it

[Girl:]
Will you love me forever

[Boy:]
I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
I started swearing to my god
And on my mother's grave
That I would love you to the end of time
I swore I would love you to the end of time

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
So I can end my time with you

[Boy:]
It was long ago and it was far away,
And it was so much better than it is today.

[Girl:]
It never felt so good, It never felt so right
And we were glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife.
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then whos to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.
A couple of gems from the Clash

I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in her for that special offer
A guaranteed personality

I wasn't born so much as I fell out
Nobody seemed to notice me
We had a hedge back home in the suburbs
Over which I never could see

and

But i believe in this-and it's been tested by research
That he who fucks nuns will later join the church
Oh and one from Paul Westerberg

She don't wear no pants and she don't wear no tie
Always on the ball, she's always on strike
Struttin' up the aisle, big deal, you get to fly
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky

Paid my fare, don't wanna complain
You get to me, you're always outta champagne
Treat me like a bum, don't wear no tie
'cause you ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky

And the sign says, "Thank you very much for not smoking"
My own sign says, "I'm sorry, I'm smokin'"
Don't treat me special, don't kiss my ass
Treat me like the way they treat 'em up in first class

Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer
Garbage man, a janitor and you my dear
A real union flight attendant, my oh my
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
Wow, this is getting serious.

So here's my EC pick of the day:

Now it's just you and me, my blue friend
And you say that it's you that she's thinking of
And our affair must end
But if it's you that she's thinking of
I think my broken heart might mend

[Chorus:]
Now it's my turn to talk and your turn to think
Your turn to buy and my turn to drink
Your turn to cry and my turn to sink down in the Blue Chair
Down in the Blue Chair

Now I've made up my mind I've made my mistake
And I know that she cries for you
When she's barely awake
She's going to bend your mind
Well I hope it don't break

[Chorus]

Down in the Blue Chair
We can watch our troubles rise
Like smoke into the air
And drift up to the ceiling
Down in the Blue Chair
You can feel just like a boy or a man
And next minute you can find yourself kneeling
Down in the Blue Chair
They're boasting of loving the daylights right out of her in the small hours
Down in the Blue Chair
You say that your love lasts forever when you know the night is just hours

And still I want her right now
Not any minute, hour or day
And wherever she is tonight
I want her anyway
I suppose she never said to you,
You were just in the way

[Chorus]

Down in the Blue Chair
Down in the blue
Blue becomes you
Down in the Blue Chair
And on the not so serious side:

Peaches come from a can,
they were put there by a man
In a factory downtown
If I had my little way,
I'd eat peaches every day
Sun-soakin' bulges in the shade

(by the way, peaches are just coming into season here in Michigan--Yuuummmmyy!)

Cool! Peaches!

"Blow up your T.V.
Throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home.
Plant a little garden,
eat a lot of peaches.
Try and find Jesus on your own."
A big +1 on Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell.

I'm a big fan of PJ Harvey and her lyrics. Here's a snippet from "The Dancer" off her album To Bring you my Love:

He came riding fast like a phoenix out of fire flames
He came dressed in black with a cross bearing my name
He came bathed in light and the splendor and glory
I can't believe what the lord has finally sent me

He said dance for me, fanciulla gentile
He said laugh awhile, I can make your heart feel
He said fly with me, touch the face of the true God
And then cry with joy at the depth of my love

'Cause I've prayed days, I've prayed nights
For the lord just to send me home some sign
I've looked long, I've looked far
To bring peace to my black and empty heart
"Hurt" (Johnny Cash version)

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

One of the most powerful songs today, IMO.
The video is even stronger.
Literally gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.
In a lifetime of writing great lyrics, one of Dylan's greatest:
Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin’ high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ’neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Girls’ faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Me too. Second best post on this thread. It kind of sucks. I think it was meant for people to jot a couple lines down maybe half a verse or so, but people are cutting and pasting full lyrics. Boo.
Seems to be a lot of Leonard Cohen fans here. My only knowledge of him comes from Manhattan

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Am I missing something?
This was my anthem when I moved out at 18:

I don't need you to worry for me, 'cause I'm alright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I stil belong, dont get me wrong
You can speak your mind, but not on my time

They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you you can't sleep with somebody else
Oh, but sooner or later you sleep in your own space
Either way it's ok, you wake up with yourself

Yes. Search out Suzanne, So Long Marianne, Hallelujah, Bird on a Wire, I'm Your Man, Dance Me to the End of Love, Tower of Song, That's No Way to Say Goodbye, Sisters of Mercy, and a bunch more that didn't come to mind quickly but I'll think of them later.

I think Cohen is much more of a poet than a songwriter; I think some of his work is put to music as an afterthought, so the lyrics always surpass the tunes in his case.

Indeed. Aside from Hallelujah which is brilliant and the exception that proves the rule, he never should have picked up microphone. Lyrics are genius, the rest, not so much.....
This one came up on the iPod on the way home tonight - IMO one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded as far as both lyrics, melody and voice.

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart

You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our live was new
And each kiss an inspiration
Bit that was long ago
Now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall where stars are bright
You are in my heart
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
A paradise where roses bloom
Though I dream in vain
In my heart you will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

Hey, I liked that show!

Unfortunately, I think my daughter has now picked up the mantle of this song. She is looking at buying a house, and has forbidden me to see her picks first. Ok, so maybe I was a little critical of the first dump she looked at...
Sometimes I try to do things but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to, and I get real frustrated and then like I try hard to do it, and I like, take my time but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to. It's like, I concentrate on it real hard, but it just doesn't work out. And everything I do and everything I try, it never turns out. It's like, I need time to figure these things out, but there's always someone there going “hey mike, you know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately, you know? You need to maybe get away. And like, maybe you should talk about it, you'll feel a lot better.” And I'm all like “oh, nah, it's ok, you know. I'll figure it out. Just leave me alone, I'll figure it out, you know? I'm just working on it by myself.” And they go “well, you know, if you wanna talk about it, I'll be here, you know? And you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it. So why don't you talk about it?” I go “no, I don't want to! I'm ok. I'll figure it out myself!” But they just keep bugging me, they just keep bugging me, and it builds up inside.

So you're gonna be institutionalized.
You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes.
You won't have anything to say.
They'll brainwash you until you see their way.

I'm not crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!
You're the one that's crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!
You're driving me crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!

They stuck me in an institution,
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help to protect me from the enemy, myself.

I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything, but then again I was thinking about nothing. And then my mom came in, and I didn't even know she was there. She called my name and I didn't hear her and then she started screaming “Mike, Mike!” And I go “what? What's the matter?” She goes “what's the matter with you?” I go “there's nothing wrong, mom.” Shes all “don't tell me that! You're on drugs!” I go “no mom, I'm not on drugs. I'm ok, I'm just thinking, you know? Why don't you get me a Pepsi?” She goes “No! You're on drugs!” I go “mom, I'm ok. I'm just thinking.” She goes “No! You're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't be acting that way!” I go “mom, just get me a Pepsi! Please, all I want is a Pepsi!” And she wouldn't give it to me! All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me! Just a Pepsi!

They give you a white shirt with long sleeves!
Tied around your back, you're treated like thieves!
Drug you up because they're lazy!
It's too much work to help a crazy!

I'm not crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!
You're the one who's crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!
You're driving me crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!

They stuck me in an institution,
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help, to protect me from the enemy, myself.

I'm sitting in my room, when my mom and my dad came in. they pulled up a chair and they sat down. They go “mike, we need to talk to you.” And I go “ok, what's the matter?” They go “me and your mom, we've noticed that lately you've been having a lot of problems, and you've been going off for no reason, and we're afraid you're going to hurt somebody, and we're afraid you're going to hurt yourself. So we decided that it would be in your best interest if we put you somewhere where you could get the help that you need.” And I go “wait, what are you talking about, WE decided? MY best interests? How do you know what MY best interest is? How can you say what MY best interest is? What are you trying to say? I'M crazy? When I went to YOUR schools, I went to YOUR churches, I went to YOUR institutional learning facilities? So how can you say I'M crazy?”

They say they're gonna fix my brain.
Alleviate my suffering and my pain.
But by the time they fix my head,
Mentally I'll be dead.

Doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyways.

You really don't want to go on do you? Didn't getting owned earlier teach you anything?

Perhaps you have the acuity of the average canine and simply need repetitive training.

Riiight, if you say so, of course. The part where you educated me on the English language and its definitions was the most telling part. What's that? It wasn't quite that way round? Oh dear...

In any case, I refuse to go on. I'm genuinely sorry, angry little man. I will not be held accountable for your actions. I didn't realise the state of mind I was addressing. Bless.

Just consider me your Pavlov. Apparently you will be a rather difficult breed to train, but I have patience.

Go back and read the other thread. You really did come off as pathetic and over matched. Show it to someone you trust, because it's obvious that you are incapable of comprehending it yourself.

By the way, you are not significant enough to generate the emotion of anger in me. Bemusement maybe. Angry? Again, you overestimate yourself. Like I told you before, I won't make that mistake again.

Yes!!! I was reading through all this and hadn't seen (I don't think...lots written) any Billy Joel references. "Piano Man" is certainly at or near the top. He's an amazing songwriter.

Again, if you say so. You must love to ref your own matches. Didn't see anyone agree with you though, ace. Factually though, you were 'owned' on your writing. You conveniently ignore this, but everyone here can read for themselves. Smug? I was. Now though, I'm worried.

I didn't claim to. Based on what I just learned in this thread, it is an emotion that is already deeply entrenched in you, and I can't bring myself to allow it to fester.

Oh dear.
LOL. Perhaps you are a cat and not a dog. You're correct. I overestimated your intelligence again. So be it. I stand corrected. However, GA rolls a ball of yarn across the forum and you mindlessly chase it. Again, you are owned. Ask anyone.

You were, and are completely owned. It's actually funny in a pathetic tragic sort of way, but I'm sure you are used to people having overt sympathy for you. You know, like the kind you have for someone with a club foot. Unfortunately for you it's for having a club brain so to speak. You, smug? More like lacking self awareness. You know, like a house cat.

Again, thank you for your complete misunderstanding of my emotional state. It isn't anger, it's actually a state of being entertained. I get that way when someone that lacks the intellect attempts to best me. You are entertaining. Just because you are so easy to best.

Consider this post, just another ball of yarn rolled across within your view.

Come on little house cat. Chase away......

I think these are beautiful lyrics. I sent them a few years ago to a friend who had just lost her daughter.

"It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you in the backroads
By the rivers of my mem'ry
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind

It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that binds me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking
It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you are moving on the backroads
By the rivers of my mem'ry
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind

Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman crying to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind

I dip my cup of soup back from the gurglin'
Cracklin' caldron in some train yard
My beard a roughning coal pile and
A dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round a tin can
I pretend I hold you to my breast and find
That you're waving from the backroads
By the rivers of my mem'ry
Ever smilin' ever gentle on my mind"
Did someone post this already?

Breath deep
The gathering gloom
Watch lights fade
From every room
Bedsitter people
Look back and lament
Another day's useless
Energy spent

Impassioned lovers
Wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love
And has none
New mother picks up
And suckles her son
Senior citizens
Wish they were young

Cold hearted orb
That rules the night
Removes the colours
From our sight
Red is gray and
Yellow white
But we decide
Which is right
And
Which is an Illusion
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I, face to face

A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian restaurant

(and on it goes to Brenda and Eddie, etc. - LOVE that song!)

John Prine is one of the best. I am a big fan and particularly of that song
Home - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros:

“Jade?”
“Alexander?”
“Do you remember that day you fell out of my window?”
“I sure do, you came jumping out after me.”
“Well, you fell on the concrete and nearly broke your ass and you were bleeding all over the place and I rushed you off to the hospital. Do you remember that?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Well, there’s something I never told you about that night.”
“What didn’t you tell me?”
“While you were sitting in the backseat smoking a cigarette you thought was going to be your last, I was falling deep, deeply in love with you and I never told you ‘til just now.”
“Now I know.”

Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is whenever I’m with you
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is when I’m alone with you

Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you

Ahh, Home
Yes, I am Home
Home is when I’m alone with you.

Alabama, Arkansas, I do love my Ma & Pa
Moats & boats & waterfalls & pay phone calls

Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is when I’m alone with you

Definitely an "under the radar" guy, John is. I had the rare opportunity to hear him and Bonnie Raitt sing Angel from Montgomery together here in DC some years back. I still get misty remembering it. Damn fine song too, that one.

Oh well, if we're talking John Prine

No, We're not the jet set
We're the old Chevro-let set
Our steak and martinis
Is draft beer with weenies
Our Bach and Tchaikovsky
Is Haggard and Husky
No, we're not the jet set
We're the old Chevro-let set
But ain't we got love

or

He ain't got laid in a month of sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby
And I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go

The song I quoted has a very similar vocal interplay to this song.

From Prine, you cannot omit this one:

Up in the morning
Work like a dog
Is better than sitting
Like a bump on a log
Mind all your manners
Be quiet as a mouse
Some day you'll own a home
That's as big as a house

I know a fella
He eats like a horse
Knocks his old balls
Round the old golf course
You oughta see his wife
She's a cute little dish
She smokes like a chimney
And drinks like a fish

There's a big old goofy man
Dancing with a big old goofy girl
Ooh baby
It's a big old goofy world

Now Elvis had a woman
With a head like a rock
I wished I had a woman
That made my knees knock
She'd sing like an angel
And eat like a bird
And if I wrote a song
She'd know ever single word

Kiss a little baby
Give the world a smile
If you take an inch
Give 'em back a mile
Cause if you lie like a rug
And you don't give a damn
You're never gonna be
As happy as a clam

So I'm sitting in a hotel
Trying to write a song
My head is just as empty
As the day is long
Why it's clear as a bell
I should have gone to school
I'd be wise as an owl
Stead of stubborn as a mule.
John Prine on Illegal Smile -
"I have to confess, the song was not about smokin' dope. It was more about how, ever since I was a child, I've had this view of the world where I would find myself smiling at stuff nobody else was smiling at. But it was such a good anthem for dope smokers that I didn't want to stop every time I played it and make a disclaimer."
Prine is an American Original. I've seem him 7-8 times over his career; last was last year in Reno. He is still true to his roots. Never sold out.
A rather bittersweet song, but the opening lyrics evoke such a clear picture and emotion for me.

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you
(Bump for a great thread)

I've these dreams of
Walking home
Home where it used to be
And everything is
As it was
Frozen in front of me

Here I stand
6 feet small
romanticizing years ago
but it's a bitter sweet feeling hearing
"Wrapped Around Your Finger" on the radio

and these days
I wish I was 6 again
Oh make me a red cape
I wanna be Superman

Oh, if only my life was more like 1983
all these things would be more like they
were at the start of me
had it made in 83

thinking bout my brother Ben
I miss him every day
He looks just like his brother John
But on an 18 month delay

Here I stand
6 feet small
and smiling cause I'm scared as hell
kind of like my life is like a sequel to a movie
where the actor's names have changed
oh well

well these days
I wish I was 6 again
Oh make me a red cape
I wanna be Superman

Oh, if only my life was more like 1983
all these things would be more like they
were at the start of me
If my life was more like 1983
plot a course to the source of the
purest little part of me

and most my memories
have escaped me
or confused themselves within dreams
if heaven's all we want it to be
send your prayers to me
care of 1983

you can paint that house a rainbow of colors
rip out the floorboards
replace the shutters but
that's my plastic in the dirt

whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my lunchbox
when came the day that it got
thrown away and don't you think I should have had some say
in that decision

If only my life...
