My wife and I watch the show with some good friends of ours and we were unable to watch with them last week. However, we all decided to wait until last night to watch the penultimate and final episodes.

Avoiding the spoilers for the entire week was INCREDIBLY difficult! It seemed like every possible media outlet had something to say about last week's episode.

I am about 550 pages into the second book, so I had no idea what was coming.

That was very disquieting - especially one death in particular. Eek

Ramsay Snow is a very disturbed (Hobbit-looking) individual.

Poor, poor Theon. Frown

I have vowed to finish book three long before next season.

Odd aside:

A few hours ago I wound up getting pizza essentially at the Divergent premiere after-party. (800 Degrees. The after party was literally in the middle of the street directly in front of the front door, which I was quite surprised by.) Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) and his wife Lisa Bonet (who knew?!) were getting pizza, too. (As were a couple of other after-partiers I didn't recognize -- sadly Kate Winslet and Shailene Woodley apparently didn't need any pizza.) For the record, Jason Momoa is enormous. Online it says he is 6'4". Yeah, maybe if he is on his knees. I've stood next to LeBron James who is 6'8", and Momoa is significantly bigger / more imposing. Enormous.

Also, it starts up again in only a few weeks! Yay!

Cool - ready for the next season. Curious to see what they do with the story and how it diverges from the books

I'm doing the same. Watched seasons 1 and 2 last week. Just finished the 4th episode of season 3 a few minutes ago. I love this series so much. Without a doubt my favorite part of the entire series was the last 10 minutes of S3E4. Pure badassery and the last shot was so awesome.

My buddy, who has read all the books claims there are numerous parts of season 4 that are even cooler than the scene I just mentioned. I can't wait.

The movie idea was floated by Martin. I really think it would be wrong. As for him finishing this series, especially taking into account his morbid obesity and slowing down to a book every five to six years, it's very possible it will not be concluded. However in the case of Robert Jordon's series, another author came in to finish it.

In regard to finishing the TV series Martin has given the producers an overview.

I thought the movie idea was more to just kind of wrap up the whole thing. Like once the series pretty much finishes up, they would do a movie to kind of wrap up each storyline in a big way.

I don't know...I heard Martin say something about how the series could just take a year off while he writes. How bout you get your fat ass behind a desk and write the frickin thing? I've been calling this guy Tolkien Jr. for a while and I think I'm right.

Who knows...maybe if he croaks, as long as the show runners know where he's planning on going with it, they can do it justice.

I thought his problem was that he writes too much. I heard his current manuscript is at like 1,800 pages.

Well, you are making an assumption that the next book will be well constructed. The last two were... disappointing... to most people.

Also, for those who say that a movie can never be better than the book, I say: "Shawshank"

I had a hard time getting through the book. My plan was to read them all leading up to this season, but the first book was such a grind that I just gave up. I assume it was because the first season pretty much follows the first book practically word for word, but it was just so tedious reading it. I got to like page 500 and essentially nothing had happened. It took 500 pages to say what the first 4 or 5 episodes said.

I'm not a huge reader, so that puts me behind the eight ball so to speak, but I just think that Martin, very much like Tolkien, is simply too wordy. He has so much fluff that it makes it really difficult to trudge through it. Maybe books 2 and 3 are different, but I felt that the tv show was vastly more entertaining than what I read of the first book. It seems like the tv show is able to eliminate Martin's crap and turn a 1,200 page snooze fest into a gripping and extremely entertaining 10 hours of television.

Maybe someday I'll try the books again, but for now, I'll stick to the tv show.

Wha wha what? There must be something in the books (which I haven't read).

That said, books worth reading at this point? Have heard great things but have heard that as HBO gets further into the show it departs more and more from the books
