Doing very well my friend!! Hope all is well with you and yours.

Almost pulled the trigger on a Patek...but the my better half wants a lake house

Good to hear all is well.

I sold a Patek 5137R this year. I hadn’t worn it but a couple of times the past few years and it seemed to fast becoming my ‘funeral’ watch.🙃. It didn’t really fit either of my son-in-laws lifestyle much either. They have others they would like.

Good luck with the lake house. We sold ours when our youngest took off for college and bought a casa in Santa Fe…. It is always something, so find the Patek or A. Lange & Sohne or AP or VC or…you want!

W+A, do you think Rolex is a nice "investment" watch? Ive never been too fond of Rolex but there style is wearing on me. I like the Daytona, rubber band, not metal but they are almost impossible to find, and if you can find them prepare to pay above retail. So I will most likely wait a bit.

However, I did pull the trigger last night on a IWC Portugieser Automatic last evening. Been reading nice things about IWC and how they tend to hold value. Did I make a mistake? Quite frankly, it may be too big for my wrist so it will go back if it doesnt fit. Should be here Monday. Be well my friend

Marcb77,

Congratulations on your IWC. Did you buy their 40mm? If so, I think it will be fine for you.

Rolex Daytona. There has never been a worse time to buy if you are looking at their 116500LN with ceramic bezels. Like all Rolex sport watches, they simply do not currently exist from Rolex AD’s. If you could walk into a Rolex AD and buy the Daytona it is only $14,500. The current price for a used 116500LN is $38,000 and rising.

If you like the SS bezels in lieu of ceramic like the 116520 they can be had for $24-$25,000. I just sold one that was from 2007 for $24k. The Daytona IMO wears smaller than you would think. More like a 38mm than 40mm.

I have sold 9 Rolex in the past year as demand is crazy. New GMT’s Pepsi, Root Beer or Batman keep going up weekly. I sold my 16710 Pepsi that I bought over 20 years ago for 3 times what I paid.

W+A

Yes, I have noticed the lack of new Daytona's available and the increase in price...I suppose I will just wait because in that price range there a few other watches I would prefer. Ive already told the better half that after we own a lake house my next watch will either be a Patek or a AP.

The IWC I purchased is the 42mm, black face, 7 day reserve. I have a 42mm Panerai that just "just" fits. I know I cant go bigger than 42. If it doesnt fit, then I make purchase the Ingeneur, 41mm, 18K gold, black face. The wife isnt sold on gold however....and Im not sure either.

W+A, do you buy previous owned typically? If so, whom do you trust?  All my purchases have been new. My other issue is we do not have any high end watch stores within a 60 mile radius, so Im restricted to ordering online direct.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks Rob, and unfortunately you were right, the IWC is just a tad too big. Back to the drawing board...looking at JLC and VC now. Obviously the Overseas is not available, I have added my name to the list.  They will most likely be calling when Im ready to make another purchase so it may work out.

Opinions on JLC or VC? Anyone?

Marc, IWC does have 40mm available.

The JLC Reverso has been a classic timepiece for 91 years and is a must own in my horology world, as are both the Cartier Tank and Santos.

As for VC, I prefer their offerings without debate over current AP offerings. Don’t sleep on A. Lange & Sohne. Brilliant watches!

I will look to see if I can find your email. I rarely ever buy new unless new is less expensive like Rolex and PP are often. There are so many trusted dealers I have bought from for in some cases decades that have mint, mint plus and like new offerings with warranties. Let me email you with thoughts and contacts including pros & cons.

As for the very special cigar you gifted me, I thoroughly enjoyed her on May 1st last year. Stunning!

W+A,

Id love to hear some more in regards to buying "used" versus new. I am always concerned about inherited someone else's issue and the lack of warranty on the piece.  Not sure how I can provide you my email privately if you dont have it already.

I think I only have one or two watches that were bought new. In almost all of the other cases I bought an absolute mint condition watch for significantly less than new.

VC and JLC are in the same tier as AP and above IWC imho. Both w+a and I have Reversos, mine a duotime and I think w+a has a squadra. CSM has an ultrathin. They are superb, generational watches. In the same price point as the IWC you were looking at, look at a master compressor, same type of technical, tool watch feel and a great watch.

As always, Rob is spot on. JLC is a top shelf watch manufacturer. There is a reason they are known as “ The watchmakers watch.”

I appreciate all the advice. My issue with the master from JLC is im not too crazy about the brown strap and im not sold on the silver face. Perhaps a different color strap would make it more appealing to my eye. Also a few of the Master compressors are a bit busy, again, something Im not used to since Ive really only been wearing Panerai.

Comparing this watch to the 56 from VC...any opinions? I prefer the overseas but I will not be paying 10K over list, Ill wait a few years for my phone call.

Lastly, when you guys buy, whether its "used" or new from someone other than the manufacturer does it carry the same warranty? Thanks so much!!

pretty embarrassed Rob...Im not on instagram or facebook. Is there a website? If not, ill figure it out.

Funny about the warranty...kind of like cars. Although some of the manufacturers now are adding 5-6 years if the watch is registered...so a 7-8 year warranty (depending on what it covers of course) isnt terrible. But probably not worth the few K you save by buying elsewhere.

Ive never sent a watch for repair, so not sure what that typically costs.
