I'm not much of a fan of the genre anymore, but I did like some stuff in the late 80's and early 90's. I figured I would sneak this in and see what others here liked before Board-O comes back and reminds us all that it isn't music. Razz

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
NWA - Straight Outta Compton
Ice-T - Original Gangster
Dr. Dre Featuring Snoop Dogg - The Chronic

Aside from the violent, misogynistic and sometimes racist content of a lot of the lyrics, I felt that these albums all did a good job of telling stories. One can argue that the lyrical content makes the music garbage, but if that were the case than a lot of well-regarded books, films, etc. would be slagged off as well based on what some deem offensive.

For those who were/are fans, please chime in.

In General, even Board-O likes this genre better than I do, BUT, even I have some positive memories from High School and growing up, either due to finding it funny or just remember it being part of the culture at the time. Two stand out to me for those reasons (not necessarily because I find them good):

2 Live Crew - The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
I listen to more Rap/Hip-Hop than any other type of music and I love how it has evolved over the years. I obviously grew up on the west coast but I actually prefer the east coast style from the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, De la Soul to more recent artists like Talib Kweli, Mos def and the Roots. I think Jay-Z is one of the greatest artists of all time and his The Black Album is the best of the best.

WOW. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions, but I've never been impressed with Jay-Z as an artist. I guess while I'm asking, do you mean in his genre or across all modern music?
I'm curious where would you rank Biggie, Pac, Dre and Cube in relation to Jay-Z from an artistic perspective? Personally I think JayZ is a better producer/entrepreneur type person than he is/was an artist.
To me, JayZ picked up the flag when the best of them were killed off in the 90s.
I, like GlennK, grew up on the west coast. I grew up listening to Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, and even E-40 (yay area!!). My problem with rap/hip hop is that there just isn't the depth to an album. I love certain songs, but never the whole album. Way too much filler.

That being said, I'd say my favorite album is Hello Nasty by the Beastie Boys. But if I had to name my favorite rappers/bands, I'd have to say listening to the Wu Tang Clan will get me fired up the most (the song Triumph has to be my favorite rap song of all time). Beyond them, I think Kanye (though I extremely dislike his persona), Eminem, and Jay Z are the best rappers out there. J-5 also needs a shout out, as I think they was the best hip hop band out there, along with the Roots.

Why is that obvious? Confused

I mean across all music and I would rank him comfortably over Biggie, pac, dre and cube. Was never much of a fan of cube and while I liked dre (he lived 2 streets over from me when I grew up) I was just more of an east coast guy. I like biggie and pac, but don't think they have the same depth of Jay.
Naughty by Nature, their eponymous 1991 release with OPP and Everything's Gonna Be Alright

Agree with Tone Loc's Loced After dark.

Does Rage Against The Machine count? I like all of theirs. (Can't believe it's 20 years ago!)

The Chronic has already been mentioned, as was Straight Outta Compton.

I liked Us3's Cantaloop.

I am going to include some trip hop - so Morcheeba and Massive Attack get a tangential inclusion!

The best single rap tune of all time is Tupac and Dre's "California Love." No arguing!

+1 - I have a couple early Beastie songs on my playlist, but beyond that while I respect it as a genre I'm not a fan.

+3
Though I do like the Roots.

Now, as someone mentioned Morcheeba, that I can get into!

I guess when you guys were listening to NWA, Ice-T etc. I was listening to the NOFX and the Pixies...

I do think you are cool, GlennK, but this is the worst post I have seen on the forum yet. Razz

Spit It took balls to say it, GlennK, but it still was a very polarizing claim Confused

De La Soul - Stakes is High
WU - 36 Chambers
Gang Starr - Hard to Earn
Biggie - Ready to Die
MF DOOM - Madvillany
Mobb Deep - the infamous
Black Moon - Enta Da Stage
The Roots - Do you want more!?!?!
Nas - Illmatic
Outkast - Aquemini
Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II

that said - my favourites to this day are still old mix tapes dubbed off the CKLN power moves show....

Haha. It wasn't balls, just how I feel. I know it's not the opinion of the majority and I'm more than fine with that. Wink
