I have first had experience with this. My son is either playing or watching from the time he finishes homework until he falls a sleep. Until I saw some recent articles about how large the audience is I thought he has out on the ledge himself. He hasn't watched tv in years. It's all youtube and twitch now. The world is changing and we are the old guys now.

My 13 year old and 3 of his buddies went to Tallahassee a month ago to watch a League of Legends competition for a weekend.

Yes, six hours in a car to watch others, not themselves, play a video game.

Turns out, it is sort of like a Comic-con. Lots of other things going on in addition to the viewing arena.

Movie theaters are starting to look at playing/streaming these during downtimes.

Our media analyst said it's going to be one of the main revenue drivers over the next few years. I"m 15 years younger than him and even I'm shaking my head!

I grew up playing video games and still play a little bit. I get the online gamig thing. Its more fun to play against people than the AI but I have no interest in watching other people play. That sounds very boring. But, Im 38 so wtf do I really know about gaming.
Wow. I knew there were tournaments back when Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament were big. I just did not imagine them being such a huge draw that they had more spectators than sports events.

I stopped playing PC games after Half-Life 2 and never liked X-Box 360 much. Just more of the same old same old. I am surprised the video game industry is still going as strong as it is. I keep expecting people to wake up and say to themselves I have already played this game a million times.

The young lad is merely gold but of course he thinks he can take you 1v1. He asked what lane you play?

hah, if you ever share wine with him, you should mention that this wine tastes like a wood 5

and i'm comfortable playing any lane since i'm one of those people that has 2 kids of my own and got the full time job kinda deal. (ie, i dont particularly care about trying ;-))

if he wants to do 1 v 1 my account is nyxfonseca

Abryce on the forums plays league of legends too actually.

the guy in the article pulls in roughly 1.5 mm a year (200k as salary from his gaming team)

average "professional" gamer salary is roughly 90k/yr if they consistently place top 3.

they make another 50-100k giving lessons or streaming.

the real good streamers with alot of followers will pull in about 450-600k/year
