Night at La Guignol, although Soul Sister and Drops of Jupiter were great a 45min. music set was disappointing (went across the street for the concert) our cameraderie and the food and wines prior were clearly the highlights of the night. Our groups 1st time there. My wife and I, and two friends were joined by Haggis and his friend Chris. We dined on soups, foie gras, veal sweetbreads, rack of lamb, pork chops, ribeye steaks, and finished with chocolate mousse and creme brulees. While the foods and desserts were not stellar, the prices, portions and the BYOB w/ $5 corkage fee were very attractive. No formal notes but wines at the table were:
1999 Charles Elner Brut Millesime Seduction, no pop, the last 1/4 of the cork crumbled and fell into the bottle, no bubbles, wine totally dead. (wish I still had a receipt to take this back to the wine store)
(not sure what year) Domaine Robert Denogent Macon-Solutre, Clos des Bertillonnes. Crisp Chardonnay, lovely floral fruit, dry stones, just a slight hint of wood (almost could be un-oaked).
2003 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe, La Crau Chateauneuf du Pape, Very nice sweet ripe 2003 fruit-ready for drinking now, blood/iron, no barnyard, a little porty quality at the end of the night.
1981 Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, (cork fell apart), very tight and austere when opened, came out and showed a hint of it's floral pedigree then faded. (Past prime) too bad.
1982 Chateau Leoville-Poyferre, opens slowly as it hits the mouth. The finish is what got me with this wine, wraps and caressed the tongue.
1994 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, this wine was the opposite of the LP, opened and remained firm and complex throughout the mid-pallet although fell of slightly (a little clipped) on the finish.
1993 Chateau d'Yquem, rich amber color, strong petrol nose, lacking in d'Yquem acidity, well past prime.
