I learned a long time ago that plants can communicate to other plants when there are threats (insects/ lack of rain/too much sun)  so other plants can take preventative measures to protect themselves.   I believe I picked up that tidbit at the train show with a certain wine loving friend of mine ;-)

There were Russian experiments done in the 70s that proved this.
