93F49D02-7196-45B3-A965-6BBB1504C8AEWe and a few friends all had very recent negative COVID tests, so tonight we’re hosting a little pizza party, likely last time we have anyone other than immediate family over for a while. Guests are bringing some special whites as surprise to me.

One bottle in the photo is also a surprise, meant to instill fear in my sommelier friend.😄

Nice line up Seaquam and happy holidays. I had my last 2003 Pegau reserve a couple of days ago and it was amazing. Hope the 2004 turned out as stellar as my 2003.

Fully mature or still room for improvement?

My recommendation was drink now with air to open it a bit or hold a while longer.   It's close enough in my book.  Doubt it'll gain more than a point maybe.

    Tasted non blind.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of melted black licorice, black currants and dried plums. Flavors of dried plums, currants and golden raisins. Medium acidity, full bodied. Drink with air or continue to hold. (94 points)

C74EBD09-794F-4619-9E6F-3FB8B5286A212005 Cascina Bruciata Barbaresco Rio Sordo — friend brought over a bottle to share a couple of years ago, and we loved it. He brought another yesterday, and it was faint on the nose, and faded on the palate. Both bottles from same case. Hard to say whether this second was an off bottle or the wine has declined rapidly in a couple of years, but either way, too bad. I guess a few more will be opened in next few weeks.

The joy and the gamble of wine...

Two from California

  • 1996 Ridge Geyserville
  • 1986 Silver Oak Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet

I have become used to a lot of bottle stink with older zinfandels.  That blew off after a long decant.  Still a powerful wine, if somewhat disjointed.

The Silver Oak, on the other hand, was magnificent.  This justifies seeking out and cellaring wine.

Last week or so...

2006 I Greppi, Greppicante...very nice!  Opaque, youthful.  Better with an hour/2 of air.

2018 Bastianich Friulano, Orsone, loved it

2017 Lions de Suduiraut.  Would buy more.

1964 Poderi Scanavino, Cascina Zocolaio barolo...for my sister-in-law's husband's bday.  Still hanging on.  Was happy it was drinkable, and even quite enjoyable.
