These guys are not going to bring a wine in blindly and just let it sit on the shelf and not move, it's all about volume.

I have heard from one of the wine guys I befriended in O.C. that they will sometimes sell their employees bottles that sit around too long for a ridiculously low price instead of having to deal with returning it to the distributor. He told me he got a few bottles of 99 Mouton for $5 last year. Eek Don't know if that's companywide or just this one store.

btw, I don't blindly buy anymore after throwing away $12 on an absolutely horrid undrinkable bottle of 2000 Clos Les Lunelles.

I think he's full of it though. Maybe they would sell it at cost, or maybe a little less, but come on 5 bucks? riiight.

Costco's in NY arre allowed to sell wine? which one is "yours"? It maybe worth the trip from the city.

Sorry michiel, I just saw this. Costco in Westbury and Holbrook are the only LI ones with wine. They are not in the main store, they are attached though. Technically run under another name Wink They have to keep it apart for legal reasons, but when you walk in, it's all costco - stacks of cases, costco prices etc. One way you can also tell Costco and the wine store are one and the same, is that they only take American Express or Debit Card (Sound familiar?)I have only been to Holbrook. I'm sure it's worth a drive one day.

No, I am not at all a coward. I deleted my cursing post because it was in very bad taste. I had a considerable amount to drink and was having an amygdala hijack. I'd explain that to you but you're stupid, and it would be a waste of time trying to educate you. I cut into you also because you are stupid. I won't say that I have never ripped into you or anyone else here on the boards, but I will say that MY ripping never comes first. All of my posts whether here, MTH, or any other place, are just thoughts put out. You and many others chose to come back with wisecracks, smartass comments and insults first. You should not throw stones if you are going to cry about your own broken windows.

edit:
I may have ripped into a member or two for their posts about education. Those that I may have taken personally.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I am not sure about $5 Mouton, but some deals I have gotten from Costco as they were clearing out oddbins of inventory include:

$59.99 for Latour and Haut Brion '99
$5.99 for Leoville Barton '98
$19.99 for Rieussec and Fleur de Gay
$9.99 for Pichon Baron and Gruaud Larose.

and a '98 Pavie that I think was mispriced at $32.99

Wish I could have gotten in on those Lafite magnums!

Does anyone know how Costco selects what they sell?

The NY Times did a long story on how Costco had emerged as one of the largest retailers of wines in the US, titled Vintner to America. It appeared on May 29, 2002 and includes remarks from Costcos' global wine buyer on the chain's buying philosophy. Not surprisingly, someone at Costco, the story explains, figured out several years ago that with the great demographics of some of the company's shoppers, they should be stocking more than everyday, supermarket wines, and that spurred them to hire more experts and upgrade their selection.
I should make it clear that these bottles werent regular prices, a Costco employee was in the store with a list of items to be moved, 1s and 2s, so to speak. It is impossible to predict when they might be at the reduced price on the shelf.

also, these Costco's were not in the more affluent areas (Oakbrook or Naperville) where I doubt it would be necessary to discount the odd bottle.
Totally NWR, but I bought a cheap Daewoo DVD player at Costco last year. I don't remember what I paid, but it was probably about $40. The damn thing died within the year so I took it back. The guy took one look at me and said "I'll need the remote and the A/V cables" - I'd forgotten them. Came back the following day and saw the same bloke. He asked if I had the receipt - no, sorry.

He went off and came back a few minutes later and said "I can only give you $45 for it". And he never even asked what was wrong with it. He gave me a store credit, which I promptly spent on wine Smile

CostCo is the BEST. Unfortunately they didn't have any replacement DVD players that I wanted, so I ended up going to Best Buy.
little thread drift here, but Costco really is the best. My friend buys a water trampoline that we anchored in front of our cottages for our kids to play on. Storm comes along blows it away never to be found , this trampoline is like 7' in diameter. It is big. Any way we return the empty box to Costco and explain we followed the directions when anchoring the trampoline and it blew away, bad directiond ineffective instructions blah blah Complete refund!.
Naperville Costco rarely has stuff I'd consider drool material. I check it about twice a week and haven't really bought anything for a while. Right now the bins are filled with overpriced Kim Crawford SB ($16.95), Franciscan CS ($19.99) and just other random stuff that doesn't interest me. The only thing I saw that really peaks my interest is the D'Arnberg Coppermine Road 2000 at $49 a bottle - not what I would call a screaming deal either.
