I don't watch talk shows (unless you include Bill Maher), but I do like this short simple line from Trevor Noah about the maskless Pence, "It’s O.K., everybody. I don’t believe in science."
I too am worried about a spike in cases as states reopen. Unfortunately, there is just too much pressure to get economies going again.
Best case scenario is that cases go up slightly but hot spots and clusters are controlled by testing and tracing, and in the meantime treatments (Remdesivir or plasma) are found that limit the severity of the sickness while we buy time for a vaccine (Oxford one seems promising) to be developed.
Worst case is a massive second wave, no effective treatment or vaccine in sight, with more deaths and another shutdown of the economy.

Off topic - but the mediator apparently was a member of the synagogue my dad was the Rabbi at in Birmingham Alabama (some time between 1976-1993) -
I was reclassified at my job today, from essential personnel to mission critical. Didn't come with a pay boost, but hey, I got a nice cloth mask out of it.
True.
Remdesivir definitely reduces the duration of symptoms and in all likelihood reduces the chances of death in those with severe symptoms. Yet to discover if giving it to those with mild or moderate symptoms reduces the chances of the symptoms becoming severe (and hence leading to death) but my guess, based upon these conclusive results, is that it would.
Combined with the Oxford vaccine, this is very good news.
I think a key question is: how much Remdesivir is available right now, or by the fall?

Well - apparently restaurants are allowed to reopen here at 25% capacity I believe on Monday. What are the chances of me dining in a restaurant any time soon? 0%. Also non-essential stores - not sure the capacity limit
I have not heard that the face mask regulation has been eliminated though so I have no idea what that means. They are required when shopping or otherwise in contact with people but not in restaurants? Makes no sense whatsoever unless that has not also been eliminated and has not been reported.
I sense a massive increase in cases in 2-3 weeks - Can only hope not.
I had to go to CVS on Tuesday because Stef cut herself while making dinner and we were out of bandaids. First time I had been in a store since March 16th - I did not even know where my wallet was.
I understand people wanting to return to normal - but I plan on staying home until we see what happens (as much as possible) -

Your last sentence is the key. People are morons. And they are going to touch the door handles then get in their care, touch their face...and so on. I really don't get the point of an employee wearing gloves...it only protects their hands.
Have been doing all groceries via InstaCart and Whole foods delivery. Ventured out twice since 03/15.
Restuarants are not open here. I would be very cautious going out to outdoor eating, as folks still have to pass within 6'. Inside is doubtful as there are claims that A/C spreads the virus in the air.
I have to say that I think Florida is doing a better plan at reopening than many other states. No gyms, theaters, salons, etc. open in Phase 1. Keeping the hot spot counties closed (even though I live in one). Emphasis on outdoor dining and only 25% capacity indoors.
We might be able to debate about whether Florida should be opening up at all yet, but if you are going to open up, I think it is being done in a relatively smart way.
just learned that a colleague of mine has been in the hospital since mid-March with Covid-19. He and his wife had gone to NY for a weekend toward the beginning of March. She had mild symptoms and tested positive-no treatment needed. He's been on a ventilator. He's 63 years old.
The mother of another friend of mine has it. My friend is around 60-63, I guess, so I suppose her mother is in her 80's. Then there is the guy from my synagogue who died who was 87. Hitting close to home.

Close to home, indeed. Our daughter's family (Chicago) came down with it more than a month ago. Daughter and kids are OK now, but our son-in-law is still ill. He describes it as "absolutely brutal."
One of my son-in-law's relatives came back from China in December feeling ill, but showed up at a Christmas gathering anyway. Both my daughter and s.i.l. came down with something that the doctors diagnosed at the time as a severe upper respiratory infection. Now they're wondering if they caught a mild case of COVID, but antibody tests are still unavailable here.
Given symptoms seem to vary so widely, I wonder how many of us have had it and either didn’t know or misdiagnosed it as something else. It’s possible many more people have had it than we think.
And if I understand correctly, kids seem to be able to get it and spread it without showing any symptoms at all. I hope someone is working on figuring out why that is.

Not quite that bad here but close. Two weeks ago I finally broke down and started going to Albertson's "Golden Hours" with a mask on to do our shopping since all of the delivery services including Amazon finally got so bad and unreliable I could no longer trust them.
Of course I started my hibernation a little earlier on March 14th.
I think 3 weeks in I finally opened my garage door and started my car and drove it around the block just to make sure the battery wasn't dead.

I will not go out except for things like a doctor appointment. I definitely will not be stepping into any stores. Of course driving your car around is OK. I guess I'm also lucky because I've had no problems with Amazon (I think once in 25 years), my daughter makes Costco runs (she does not come into the house) and while Instacart isn't perfect, there's usually one or two minor errors, it's good enough. I expect this to be the way for people over 50 or 60 until at least the end of the year if not longer.
Palm Beach County expected to open beaches on May 18th. Will be nice to put my toes in the sand again. I've seen lots of people go down to the beach, in violation of the local order. I actually called the police on a big group last week.
And the Governor just announced Palm Beach County is going to Phase One on Monday.
Here in Maryland they are opening golf courses. Foursomes are separated by 14 minutes between tee times. Each golfer must either walk or use a cart by himself. No rakes or ball washer devices. You may not take the flag out of the hole.
Of course, it is supposed to go down into the 30's tonight so it's not exactly golf weather. Tomorrow it will not make it to 50 and it will be windy. But, there is hope for the future.
My coworkers and I learned this week that a courthouse screener that many of us know by name, died on Sunday from Coronavirus.
Meanwhile back at the White House, Trump welcomed Republican members of Congress in the State Dining Room, sitting in front of the fireplace and directly underneath the inscription from John Adams that says, "May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof."
And from that place the president* said this about the Coronaviurus, quote, "I feel about vaccines the way I feel about tests. This is going to go away without a vaccine, and we're not going to see it again."
You want to talk about a douche bag. Rand Paul at today's Coronavirus Senate hearing, no mask and a bizarre attack on Dr. Fauci.
Well, according to the White House, we have "prevailed" against the virus. I'm so glad to hear that.

Why do you speak as if you are an expert on everything? Dr. Fauci would keep us closed until 2021 or longer if he could. His job is that of an infectious disease expert. It is a Senator / Congressman / President to balance both the disease and the economy. We need to get this train moving again in a smart and safe way.

Wrong. Instead of a strong and UNITED response months ago to mitigating this pandemic, Putin’s Bitch and his merry band of dummies abdicated those responsibilities to governors.

I hate responding to you, you're such a poor debater and your thinking is so muddled like when you make hyperbolic statements such as, "Why do you speak as if you are an expert on everything?" So here we go.
I did not speak as an expert on ANYTHING in this thread. All I did was first state the truth, Rand Paul is a douchebag for not wearing a mask when everyone else of both parties is. And then this weird comment to Dr Fauci, which I quote in full.
"As much as I respect you, Dr. Fauci, I don't think you're the end-all," Paul said, adding, "We can listen to your advice, but there are people on the other side saying there's not going to be a surge."
Dr. Fauci is well aware that he's not the end-all. In addition he just gives his best advice based on his decades-long experience in this field. Of course it's the politicians who choose what policies to institute. This has always been true. The scientists who built the A-bomb did not have the final decision to drop it. They gave their input. In that case the president decided.
And your response? "Dr. Fauci would keep us closed until 2021 or longer if he could." To the best of my knowledge the doctor has not closed anything. Not a restaurant, not a school, not an amusement park, not anything I'm aware of. Dr. Fauci would recommend doing whatever he thinks is best for public safety. It's kind of what he does. But he has no enforcement power.
Fauci is just giving his advice. Perhaps if the president had listened to it, instead of delaying, attacking the press, and promoting quack medicine cures, his approval rating on his handling wouldn't be negative.
Obviously this is my last response to you on this point.
(Edited to take out the blah, blah of mine.)

Nice catch...I forgot to include the word recommend with respect to Dr. Fauci.
Below is a Dr. Fauci timeline of his own statements and words. This is what he was telling the American people and the President. Possibly the President did listen.
January 21, 2020: Fauci claimed the coronavirus was “not a major threat to the people of the United States.”
“This is not a major threat to the people of the United States and this is not something that the citizens of the United States should be worried about right now,” Fauci said during an interview with Newsmax’s Greg Kelly.
February 26, 2020: Fauci said, “Travel restrictions become almost irrelevant because you can’t keep out the entire world.”
“When you have a pandemic that involves multiple countries, travel restrictions become almost irrelevant because you can’t keep out the entire world,” Fauci said during an interview with CNBC News.
February 29, 2020: Fauci claimed there was no need for Americans to “change anything what you’re doing on a day-by-day basis” during an interview with the Today Show.
“Right now, at this moment, there is no need to change anything that you’re doing on a day-by-day basis,” Fauci said in response to a question about changing lifestyle habits. “Right now the risk is still low, but this could change.”
March 9, 2020: Well after concerns of the spread of the novel coronavirus had aroused, Fauci suggested that it was okay to take a trip on a cruise if you were a “healthy young person.”
“If you are a healthy young person, there is no reason if you want to go on a cruise ship, go on a cruise ship,” Fauci told reporters at a White House briefing.
“But the fact is that if you have … an individual who has an underlying condition, particularly an elderly person who has an underlying condition, I would recommend strongly that they do not go on a cruise ship,” Fauci added.
March 9, 2020: Fauci said the decision to hold a campaign rally the next day would be a “good judgment” if it were held at a venue where there was no “community spread.”
“Not sure what we’re going to be able to say at the time where you have a campaign rally,” Fauci said in response to a question regarding political campaign rallies. “If you’re talking about a campaign rally tomorrow, in a place where there is no community spread, I think the judgment to have it might be a good judgment.”
“If you want to talk about large gatherings in a place where you have community spread, I think that’s a judgment call,” Fauci added. “And if someone decides they want to cancel it, I wouldn’t publicly criticize them.”
March 12, 2020: In contrast to his February 26 remarks, Fauci said that he believed certain travel restrictions have “absolutely” helped with the prevention of the spread of the coronavirus.
“I think it absolutely has,” Fauci said. “I believe if we did not do that with China early on …”
Fauci also called the travel restriction involving Europe a “prudent choice.”
April 11, 2020: Fauci claimed during an interview with Fox News’s Jesse Watters that it was “in January” when he believed that this was a problem Americans needed to worry about, which contrasts several of his previous remarks made that month and the months following, including his remarks on the Today Show in February.
Look them all up if you like. All 100% accurate.

God, I hate replying to you. (I know it's my own fault.)
Science is not definitive, nor dogmatic, that's for religion. Science is a moving arrow that is always trying to hit the target. Science does not say this is the absolute--that's why even as well understood phenomenons of nature like gravity and evolution are still referred to as theories. If a part of a theory is challenged, such as what's been occurring with theory of the Big Bang with new evidence for Dark Energy and Dark Matter, science does not stand firm and deny the new information. Instead it incorporates the data to make new theories and predictions which will hopefully move us to a closer understanding.
So now that we science 101 I guess your point is that Fauci's been acting like a scientist instead of the fabulist you adore ("It will disappear like magic.") He has been in charge of the of the NIAID since 1984. That's "ID" as in "infection diseases." One of his jobs is to advise the president, as he has with five administrations, but Democratic and Republican on...wait for it...infections diseases just like this one.
So science makes predictions based on best estimates, best available data (that's kind of a tough one since it's been almost two months since your hero lied and said, "Anyone who wants a test can get a test.") and the experience of the scientists involved. That's how it works, are you still with me? Science does the best it can, but it's the politicians who make the decisions.
Now am I going to take the time to address everyone of the sliced and diced talking points you've gotten from Fox "News" and "News"max and I'm sure your new fav OAN? Simply no. Do I think Facui is perfect in every way? I know no one who is. But, my feeling is, and I'm pretty sure polls show that most Americans' feelings are, that he's a man of integrity. It would be laughable to say the same thing of the president. But it's clear that your alternate facts buddies are on some destroy Facui mission to cover up the extreme incompetence of the Dear Leader. It's clear as day and it won't work.
Anyway I was thinking about what this all means for TV shows and film. This is a major event in every ones lives and it can't be glossed over. Also it's going to still be with us for some time. So film and TV will adapt. More will be shot outdoors, or in big studio buildings using less on set crews and whatever tasks can be done remotely. We will see movies with people wearing masks and social distancing and the strain that's been placed on hospitals, doctors and first responders will play out in them.
In decades when people think of the best shows and movies of 2020 and perhaps 2021 it will be of actors with masks and how well they incorporated a pandemic into their stories. Strange days indeed.
I wonder if napa actually read the actual transcript/listened to all the points he listed above.
Napacat, I'll just take your most recent one about Fauci because you don't seem to acutally goto the source on anything your claim and instead spew breibart and OAN propaganda.
In that Watters interview, he specifically states:
"[W]hen we finally did get the virus here, it [became] clear that when we started looking [at what] was going on, [that] was misinformation right from the beginning," Fauci told host Jesse Watters. "So whose ever fault that was, you know, we're gonna go back and take a look at that when this is all over. But clearly, it was not the right information that was given to us."
So he's reflecting that he gave recs based on the best available information there was.
To conclude what Fauci said:
"You know, I don't know where the missteps went. The only thing I know what the end result was that early on we did not get correct information and the incorrect information was propagated right from the beginning because, you know, when the first cases came out that were identified, I think on December 31 in China, and we became aware of this," Fauci said. "They said this was just animal to human, period. Now, we know retrospectively that there was ongoing transmission from human to human in China, probably at least a few weeks before then."

Thanks for doing the heavy lifting gman, as I said sliced and diced talking points from right-wing media. Their purpose is the same as it's always been, to protect the president no matter what. These are the same people who continually played down the seriousness of the virus and then, as the numbers of deaths climbed into the tens of thousands, tried to get us to forget that it's what the president and they themselves did.
By the way you should read some of the comments that follow the article that you quoted. Shows what a bunch of loonies Fox News viewers are. Here's one from many, "It was dr fauci that is responsible. When he was the head of the NIH under the Obama administration. He sent the virus and the monies to China to experiment with! There is more to this story that if the MSM would investigate will shock you." The lamestream media never gets to the facts!

G-man...never once been to Breitbart news or the OAN network. I think we are saying the same thing...and I am looping in my reply to TOM on this as well.
You are willing to give Dr. Fauci the benefit to adapt with times to things we learn (which is more than reasonable), as you cannot / possibly would not make the same decision with newly gained information over time.
Yet you will not do the same thing for the President. Trump knows nothing about infectious diseases...and I am sure from early on he was listening to the Dr.'s say this is a relatively low risk to the American people. A case or two from China...that will quickly be under control. No human to human spread. Fauci was wrong at the time...extrapolate that to Trump and that is most likely the same reason he responded as he did.
If Obama were in office now and handled this in the exact same manner, I would not be blaming him. This in no means is a one person response team.
The double standard is what is most annoying. I don't see much reporting on the NY State MANDATE to have nursing homes accept COVID positive patients who were discharged from Hospitals and may still be contagious. BRILLIANT.
@napacat posted:
Yet you will not do the same thing [give him the benefit of the doubt] for the President. Trump knows nothing about infectious diseases.
Because he's a pathological liar. Because he claimed, "I really get this stuff." Because he pushed unproven drug treatments. Because he apparently thought ingesting household cleaners would be beneficial. Because he's claimed about every ill we have "I alone can fix it." Because over two months ago he said, "Anyone who wants a test can get a test" (not true then, not true now.) Because he wasted TV time, that was supposed to be for updates on the virus, to make unhinged attacks against the press and anyone else who disagreed with him. Because he actually thinks he's the Messiah or the second coming of Jesus, "I'm the Chosen One." Because he engaged in magical thinking, "One day it will just vanish." Dr. Fauci did none of these things and that's why more Americans believe him and not Trump. And finally it's because the current attacks by the president, his sycophants and state news media are clearly designed to give cover for the president's ineptitude in handling this crisis.
As for where you get you news, between Fox News and the Washington Sentinel (whatever that is) I think you're missing a lot of facts.
Why do folks keeping copying a whole thought, VS just answering it? Maybe cntrl C and cntrl V are too easy.
The deflection and whataboutism is way to strong for you napacat.
I am perfectly fine calling Cuomo out for doing a shitty job. I happen to live in NY for the better part of 4 decades and I have never liked Cuomo even from his HUD days. Honest reflection of Cuomo is that he was definitely late to the game, but when he was onboard he might have been a little overboard in his prep, but at the end, the total CV19 counts in NY today have finally started decreased. A successful slow the spread effort. I believe probably one of only 2 states able to have the curve go the right way today. I'd go as far to say that NY should now be restricting travel in from other states least we restart this vicious cycle.
Anyhow, I find for most folks, the world isn't a binary argument. It's like getting diseases, if you get syphillis you can get gonorrhea too. It's not an either or.
Btw, alot of local news here have published about NY and Cali's decisions to send Covid recovered patients back to nursing homes, so, just because you don't look for the news, doesn't mean it's not being reported locally.

Good call. I knew he was getting his drivel from somewhere I just didn't know where. First the Washington Sentinel and now American Priority. Fortunately I never heard of either of these fountains of truth, but at least they're not the lamestream media that's trying to bring down the president by actually quoting him and showing him speaking his own words. I hate when they do that.
Toronto FINALLY opening some streets to bike and pedestrian traffic so we can spread out a little. A huge improvement from last weekend, when cops were guarding every entrance to a local park tp keep out any vile miscreants thinking about sneaking in to look at the cherry blossoms.

Yes it's been annoying in NY like that.
I get if folks are really grouping and congregating but if it's one offs of neighbors and we're all staying far apart, do you really need to give your fellow citizens a summons?

Nice try...never heard of American Priority. Know nothing about it. Regardless of where it was copied or pasted from...those are his words. But all of you in your last group of replies ignore his words and what he said. Speaks volumes!
I'm not condoning it. I just understand the why...
@napacat posted:I thought you were to reply with quote when responding to someone? Not correct?
Yes, but you can, and should for clarity, reduce it to the parts you're actually responding to.
@napacat posted:Nice try...never heard of American Priority. Know nothing about it. Regardless of where it was copied or pasted from...those are his words. But all of you in your last group of replies ignore his words and what he said. Speaks volumes!
What American Priority wrote is exactly what you quoted. It took things out of context to again protect the president from the truth about his miserable failure in addressing the pandemic. Who knows where these things begin that get picked up by the right wing media bubble? But then, like the pizza killing parlor story about Hillary Clinton they get passed around on Twitter, blogs, text messages and disgusting sites like Infowars . I guessing many (most?) of these stories are from Russian troll farms. As we know not only does the president get help from a despotic country like Russia, but he actually welcomes it.
"But all of you in your last group of replies ignore his words and what he said"
I addressed your apparent lack of understanding how science works. No surprise from people who support this boob when it comes to science. gman showed how the cut and paste job from the original source twisted the meaning of the words Fauci has spoken. Also it's so obvious why the right wing media, and the president's enablers and sycophants are trying to discredit the Dr. when he's believed to a much greater extent than believe the Lair in Chief.
But really what's the point of these discussions? No one's mind will change. We all have to await the Nov. election (which you mocked me for asking what if he loses and doesn't leave.) Now, there's talk about suspending the election. but according to that boy wonder, and real estate genius, his royal son-in-law said the election is on "for now." "I’m not sure I can commit one way or the other, but right now that’s the plan." Wow that's reassuring. Just look at what he said. I guess he's the national election board chairman. And remember he also owns, I guess with Trump family, the nation's emergency stockpile. "The notion of the federal stockpile is that it's supposed to be our stockpile. It's not supposed to be states' stockpiles that they then use."
If you a supporter of this president you are an enemy of the United States and democracy.

i posted fauci's actual words, with source, in context.
you seem to have trouble comprehending what he actually said?
Sheeple are only good for copy and pasting other people's words it seems and pretending they can formulate a real tangible thought for themselves.
"When you test, you have a case. When you test, you find something is wrong with people. If we didn't do any testing we would have very few cases."
So if we didn't investigate murders, the murder rate would drop? If we didn't test for HIV, the HIV rate would drop?
The only reason he wants to limit testing is to keep the actual numbers down, as he continues to minimize how poorly he's handled this whole situation.
Some local morons have filed a lawsuit to remove the checkpoint keeping non-residents/essential personnel out of the Keys.
This has prevented the transmission of the virus from Miami-Dade/Broward with thousands upon thousands of cars being turned away - and in turn has kept our numbers relatively low. They are geniuses

The scary thing to think about is how bad would things have to get before the Governors of the states that are reopening would decide to shut down their economies again? What would it take for Georgia or Texas or Florida to issue a second stay-at-home order?
I truly pray that things don't take a turn for the worse. I am hopeful, for example, that my home state of Florida will be able to handle any increase in cases and hospitalizations. But we are in uncharted waters, and I wonder if anyone is even thinking about what do do if we get a resurgence.
I’m sure doctors and nurses are thinking about it. Those who call the shots? Not so much.
Our governor is moving to have our state (MD) begin re-opening today. He's left it up to the county executives to make the final call for their jurisdictions, which I think is smart. My county (Montgomery) and adjacent Prince Georges are holding off for the time being, since both counties have disproportionate Covid-19 issues. No matter how or when we get to the point where we have this disease somewhat under control, I'm pretty sure the world we lived in in January isn't going to be the same after this mess. Dining, sports, live music and theater are all going to look different.

I saw a few video clips of press conferences after they ended, one from White House briefing and one from Chicago press briefings. In both cases people were shown taking off their masks after the conference was over. This included press and some staff. Does that mean they were just wearing the masks for show during the press conferences?

How would anyone here know?
Guy delivering beer to me wasn’t wearing a mask. I wasn’t either when answering the door. He needed to take a picture of my ID and was a little winded from carrying the beer. He stayed more than 5 feet away the whole time and he was outside. And the door was only open about a foot. And the whole thing took less than 3 minutes. Still, yich.
OTOH, I’m staying in completely. Everything has been Whole Foods via Amazon and Instacart. And some stuff direct from Amazon. Getting prescriptions delivered, too. I spent $700 stocking up on 75%+ isopropyl alcohol last week via Amazon.

That is what most of it was. 12 1L bottles of 99% for $450, and some assorted gallons of 75%. Since March 13 I have gone through 30 canisters of Clorox wipes, 2 packages of Costco wipes, and 2 1/2 gallons of 70% alcohol. Wipes are no longer available. So assuming a gallon a week isn’t that crazy for how friggin’ nuts I am.

Bar tender no mask or gloves, server at first no mask [later put one on] & no gloves. Owners bobbing around all tables no mask, no gloves. Menus spotted from use, not one time use, Outside tables not cleaned up after prior folks, wanted to sit there, but had to go to a clean one inside.
Looks like owners don't give a damn about Phase one standards Also owners were trying to tell us in March that the virus was just a flu, and 35k folks died from that, so why worry.

It's way too early to be going out to a restaurant in Palm Beach County, in my opinion. And anyone who thinks that the coronavirus is "just the flu" is an idiot. 88,000+ deaths in two months isn't the flu.

It's not the number, it's the greatly increased percentage of those infected who die that separates this from the flu.

Geez dude. I bought a 4-pack of Clorox wipes back in January. I put one pack in the car for dog messes. I just opened another to replace the one in the kitchen which was opened sometime last year.

Thinking about the virus makes me even more a supporter of something since I was a teenager, space travel. Early liberal dogma in the 70s suggested money was wasted on NASA when we have so many problems on the Earth. As has been shown there were many benefits gleaned from the space program. However, there's a more important long-sighted goal of space travel, our planet is eventually doomed and the next pandemic might be the one that wipes out most of humanity. Or certainly an asteroid will obliterate all of civilization at some point. Interesting guesses, based on the information science currently has, predicts a 5km to 10km asteroid hits the Earth on average every 20 million years. The last one was the dinosaur extinctor 65 million years ago. That one was estimated to be 10 km. Think about only a six mile wide chunk of rock causing extinction of the human race. And one of them is due. And of course at the end of the line is the burnout and shift to red giant phase of our own Sun, which will cause the Earth to be vaporized inside the super-hot gaseous sphere.
So at the least, to guarantee the survival of the species, somebody's got to get off this planet and be able to live, not just on the Moon or Mars, but between the stars.
I'm on board with Space Force if it's without weaponry. We probably won't be encountering any aliens out there. Though a "super-duper" photon torpedo or two might not hurt.

Pleasant thoughts for a Monday morning.
I remember hearing a lecture once from some scientist who said, "The world will come to an end due to the burnout of the Sun in around 10 Billion years." The blonde woman next to me said, "What did you say?" He repeated his comment. She said, wiping her brow, "Thank God. I thought you said 10 Million years!"

Well said
It is not easy for TT and Napa here. I appreciate how frustrating it is when you're in the minority among a group who don't see the greatness and wisdom of the president. We look and see...well you know, the worst president on a monumental level in our lifetime...and they see a "stable genius." I know it's almost impossible to believe that intelligent men (I'm assuming at least a minimal level of education from people who can afford to be wine collectors and connoisseurs) listen to the drivel that daily (with Tweeting, hourly) comes out of this man's mouth and think--yeah, that's my guy. But there they are and they can't figure out what's wrong with us.
We can only hope that our long national nightmare ends this November. However for various reasons, such as cheating by asking foreign countries to help and that favorite Republican tactic--suppressing the vote, I'm not betting on it.
You know very little about my views on Trump but you make a lot of assumptions. The biggest problem is with the attitudes of those who are on the left side, for example gman’s response to my post which is very childish. Seems like some people can post their views in any manner they like, but cannot accept criticisms of people on their side of the aisle. Can you tell me that Cuomo’s orders for nursing homes to take Covid patients were reasonable and didn’t have any impact on the deaths of thousands of people in nursing homes who died from the virus? Cuomo fucked up and won’t take ANY responsibility for what happened. I don’t need to be from New York to see that.

Do I think that Gov. Cuomo's done everything right during this time? No.

you seem to assume I'm on the "left". I've worked on wall st for over 20 years. I seriously doubt anybody i know has considered me "left".
The local papers here all rile against Cuomo. But do you know exaclty how many of the deaths were attributed to patients treated and released back into nursing homes vs those who got it from relatives visiting in the first place without PPEs?
You don't. I will tell you that the visitations and nurses without PPEs was a vastly larger issue vs patients treated, tested and put back into nursing homes.
So no, TT, you don't know the details. You are doing a 900000000 mile view of something you just don't have enough details on. It has nothing to do with "criticism". Proper critique has data, analysis, informed commentary to back it up. What you're saying is simply off the cuff opinion that anyone off the street can make a snide remark about. You can't possibly expect anybody with a brain/not a sheep to accept.
oh and hte "I used to be from NY" is about as lame as "I understand asian culture cuz I married an asian woman". I was born in Wisconsin. I know some parts, and while I like drinking Miller, I don't know much about what happened in the past 40 years in Wisconsin to consider myself a Wisconsinite. but I will relent. if you were from NY, you should take me telling you to fuck off in stride. Cuz you know, that's what we New Yawkers do.
Actually, I'll play.
The entire premise is basically: If you were treated in a hospital, cured of cv19, and deemed healthy enough to be discharged, you shouldn't go back into a nursing home because of fear that you can reinfect someone else in the nursing home.
But when it comes to state reopening, that same train of thought is no longer valid?
A very rainy couple of days down here in South Florida. Ordinarily I'd be upset to see a holiday weekend ruined. This time I'm not so upset, if it keeps the idiots inside their houses instead of congregating at the beaches and parks.
Played tennis for first time since March 15 this morning. Felt good but my shoulder is tight
Virus cases rising at a terrible rate here. Over 300 new in our county alone. Can see why, most idiots do not wear masks shopping, or dining. Only "recommended" as we have a very stupid a$$ kissing gov.
Scared about case rates next week. Vast vast majority of transmission is indoors. But, still...
I really think a lot of people are "done" with the virus, the masks, social distancing, etc. On Saturday night I drove by the ocean in my neighborhood and saw multiple cabana parties going on - people hanging around in cocktail attire (without masks) and drinking and talking and having a good time. Completely pre-Covid in feeling. I understand it is outdoors, and the chances of infection are lower, but I wouldn't be comfortable right now being in a large group outside.
The problem, as I see it, is that since we quarantined, we never saw the hospitals get overwhelmed, no one really knows anyone close to them who either has had the virus or died from it, so it doesn't seem as scary as it did in the beginning.
I have plans to go up to Lake George in a couple of weeks. I'm maintaining my social distancing and avoiding large groups as a precaution. The last thing I want to be is a spreader of the virus somewhere else. I believe NJ has been third in the country in the number of cases.
Well it is about to hit the fan very soon unfortunately for a lot of cities.
Roadblock into the Keys came down today - tourists allowed back today (they were here anyway in long term vacation rentals - mostly legal - and shorter term - completely illegal) - Easy to pick out either via rental golf carts, scooters or bikes and general cluelessness.
Anyway, everyone in town (even the open now people) are concerned with what is to come - we shall see
Happily the tennis courts were not crowded yesterday and people were behaving - unfortunately the hanging out, beer and bloody mary's and shrimp and snacks are a thing of the past.
We are going to our best friends' restaurant for the first time this evening - sitting outside despite the eat - Stef is not pleased but I insisted. Hopefully the "peaceful protest/rally" scheduled for this evening will not spiral out of control - if limited to locals - I am sure it will be fine - if we have been infiltrated with troublemakers - who knows.
It's hard to buy into the severity of the disease and the need for social distancing if you don't see much of it in your region.
In my neck of the woods, hospitalizations and intubations continue to decrease off the mid-April high. Youngest patient I've seen on a vent is 20 yrs old. Youngest I've seen with diffuse bilateral pneumonia, not on a vent, is 16.
Most patients who die from the virus, tend to die within the first week of being hospitalized. A neighbor of mine died 4 days ago after being on a ventilator for more than 2 months. What is also becoming obvious is that this not just a respiratory disease, but also a vascular disease. The virus apparently promotes thromboembolic events. Patients are dying from stroke, pulmonary emboli, and multisystem organ failure. Youngest patient I've seen with stroke from Covid is 32.
Well - the protest/march here was totally peaceful - that's good.
We had a nice dinner - but unfortunately for our friends - their restaurant was empty. Hopefully business will pick up soon. It was Monday and I am sure locals stayed home due to tourists coming and the protest March - but was definitely weird
Palm Beach County just reported the largest spike in cases yesterday. That's a bit disconcerting.
I haven't gone to a restaurant yet for a meal - still doing take-out only.
I'm waiting to see the spike in cases in cities where these protests have been going on.

It’s sort of odd that people fancy themselves as amateur virologists, physicians, and immunologists. When I get on an airplane I don’t critique the pilot’s flight plan and I hate it when some client of mine thinks he knows better than I about how to handle a lawsuit, what evidence to use, what witnesses to call and so forth.

It felt awesome to have a meal prepared by someone else for a change, as well as see some staff my wife and I consider friends. I do think about it though, whether or not we should be doing that. If a person shows interest in informing themselves more about a particular field, but may sound more abrasive in approaching a situation with a directive tone, i honestly don't see what's wrong with it. Though, i did catch your word critique which, knowing you are a lawyer, is precisely what you meant, in which case i agree =P

I believe the point that CV19 hasn't been shown to really spread via aerosol that if you're outdoors with non stagnant air, you are very likely okay especially if the patio tables are spaced far enough apart.

I'm constantly surprised by how many defendants want to represent themselves, despite many admonitions to the contrary. Even more so, the ones that try to do an end-run around their attorney, attempting to negotiate a better deal.
Our state wants to go to Phase 2. Death rate has been increasing for last week, along with infection rate. Gov just a$$ kisses the orange pile of dung! Lets all get closer, and then we can really get the rate higher. When we go out we wear masks, look like "idiots" as i seems we are the only ones
will be interesting to see if there are lots of post-protest infections, as alot of the marchers are not wearing masks and are close to others, and lots of chanting and screaming is occurring. (This is not a comment on whether people should or should not protest(.

I’m most concerned about the health professionals who weighed in in favor of all the marches and protests. They will have lost a lot of needed credibility. Obviously, we need tremendous change in how policing occurs in this country and in how black people are treated by all aspects of the judicial system, not just the police. (And many other systems as well.) And the George Floyd murder was such a dramatic example of that, that the protests are totally understandable, if not wise. But I’m crossing my fingers they don’t lead to massive infections and death spikes. Already, in the past less than 3 months more black people in this country have died of Coronavirus than all police killings of black people (including armed) plus all hate crimes and domestic terrorism of black people in the past 20 years combined.
With the re-openings and the protests going on, I think we will see a huge surge in cases. Florida is already seeing a big spike, and I expect it will go on. I don't see governors pulling back on the re-openings until people are literally dying in the streets.
The "flattening of the curve" was never meant to eliminate the virus, just to make sure we didn't overwhelm the hospitals, and give them time to get ready for the next wave. Maybe we accomplished that. But I think we are going to see an ugly summer and a terrible fall, unless we get some unexpected good news on the treatment front.

At least not the tRump taint-sniffer governors.
Interesting story from the WHO...asymptomatic spread is very rare.
Science writer Laurie Garrett is reporting that this statement is being clarified, "This was NOT a new study from @WHO but an answer in a press conference. And use of term 'asymptomatic' by @mvankerkhove in the presser was clarified to mean truly no symps., noting that ppl may have mild, undiagnosed sympts & be contagious."
She went on to explain it could be a headache that went away or some other almost unnoticed mild symptom.
Pretty lengthy answer. Asymptomatic people are not spreading this. And 85-90% of the people who contract it have very mild symptoms. Time to end the lockdowns and following stupid arrows.

I posed this WHO comment to a friend of mine who is an infectious disease specialist at a local hospital. Here is what he said…….
"Irwin, this is a new, novel viral pathogen. I don't have confidence in all the so-called facts that have appeared in print. However, this is a potentially fatal illness. Do you want to take any personal risks that are not absolutely required? Each individual is different and the spectrum of willingness to take risk is wide and inconsistent. Remember, exposure to each person is only as safe as that person's behavior. So even if you are extremely strict and thorough but you interact with one other person who isn't and has interacted with 100 persons, it's as if you yourself have interacted with all those interactees. Now if you gather in an enclosed room with hundreds of people,.....you do the math. I have been jaded by caring with patients on ventilators for over 40 years and have seen how bad it can be. I want to avoid that if possible. Sorry for being so gloomy about all this."
So, I personally follow the advice of the physicians I know. As I previously noted, when I get in a plane I don't suggest a flight plan to the pilot. I defer to the professionals, who I am convinced are doing their best and who, in general, are not motivated by political or economic considerations.
@flwino posted:Put your mask back on, and seal with duct tape.
See Fl Wino...Irwin had an intelligent and worthy reply. You...not so much. We have 62k people infected in a state of 22M. And infections are not what you should be tracking...it should be the people that need hospitalization. If you are elderly with any underlying condition..you need to take precautions. Those are the group of people that tend to be dying from C-19. Are there outliers....sure.
From today's New York Times,
"A top expert at the World Health Organization on Tuesday walked back her earlier assertion that transmission of the coronavirus by people who do not have symptoms is 'very rare.'"

How anyone can take anything the WHO says seriously is beyond me. The only thing consistent in its handling of this and its advice is that it's been wrong at virtually every turn. I understand the pressure to come up with "answers" but these guys are supposed to be scientists and are speculating at best and presenting it as fact. Brutal.
I would like this thing to end just to get rid of the "we're with you" and pretend Zoom meeting commercials.
45 is making his cult sign waivers before attending his rally in Tulsa. I thought he said this was a hoax, why the need for a waiver? Sounds like Natural Selection at work.

They are probably convinced that Pocahontas or Sleepy Joe will put Covid-19 in the a/c ducts. Perhaps Napa can let us know if that’s possible. As I recall, he’s our resident expert on air conditioning.
You can’t spell “havoc” without HVAC......
Our numbers rising rapidly since Keys were opened to visitors. Such a surprise
The number of confirmed cases is soaring in Florida. Hospitalizations don't look like they are going up as sharply, but they are always a trailing indicator. So, in about two weeks we'll see if things are really bad down here in Florida or not.
I have my own feelings about how this is about to play out.

Which are...?

It's about to get real bad down here in Florida.
A bunch of states have seen an uptick in cases. The increase in positive tests can be attributable maybe to increased testing. The increase in hospitalizations is because more people are sick enough to require hospitalization and who knows with whom they have been in contact
AZ and TX are seeing a lot more in the ICU's
"The US Food and Drug Administration has revoked its emergency use authorization for the drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for the treatment of Covid-19."
Gee, what a surprise. But Dr. Trump ("I really get this stuff") said it was a "game changer."
On Saturday, the President (maskless) spoke at the West Point graduation ceremony of the class of 2020. The cadets marched in wearing dress uniforms and masks. They removed the masks and sat quietly 6 feet apart. Then, at the dramatic moment at the end of the ceremony, as is customary, they stood and tossed their caps high into the air. Then, many of them, maskless, hugged each other.
If they were going to hug each other while not wearing masks, why wear them while marching in? Anyway, congrats to the class of 2020. Let's hope they don't ever have to risk their lives in combat, or on the streets of the US.
Here's a link to a Fox "News" article about the FDA revoking use of hydroxychloroquine for treatment of Coronavirus. There is NOT one mention of the president touting it and also claiming to have used it:
FDA revokes emergency use authorization for chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine
Is anyone surprised that Fox "News" viewers are clueless?
bunch of Cowboys tested positive. Going to make for an interesting football season
Plus some Texans as well.
Free ICU rate in our county about 9%. Local hospital is 0%. Rate of hospitalization is up, use of masks, and social distancing is virtually non-existent
Finally we are under a mandatory wearing in all public places. Was out for happy hour and we were the only ones wearing masks and social distancing. One 'friend' walked up to us within 2 feet to talk, had to ask her to move and then put on our masks while eating at table. Inside bar had groups of 5-6, of course '1' apart, and no masks. Shall not return until 2025
2 local bar/restaurants re-closing due to infected employees. One worked for 5-7 days after being exposed and waiting for test results
Yes, and they say they are going to have baseball. If a player gets the virus, the team must quarantine and forfeit the next games? Crazy.
Where are napacat and thistlintom?
Bunch of tennis players and Jokic from NBA infected in Serbia ad Djokovic ridiculous tennis tournament - I turned it on and could not believe what I was seeing. Packed stands, no masks, no distancing - hugging, hand shaking etc. Apparently they also played basketball and went out partying and dancing.
So stupid
Interesting (to me at least) that the spikes are in warmer locales, where folks might be more inclined to stay inside due to AC, rather than outside, where the spread seems to be minimal. Doesn't bode well for a second wave in the North and Midwest this fall (without additional closures).
FROM CNN
The US states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will require visitors from Covid-19 hotspots elsewhere in the country to quarantine for 14 days, officials have said.
The governors of the three north-eastern states - once coronavirus hotspots themselves - announced the joint travel advisory today.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he did not want visitors from other states bringing Covid-19 in with them, because "we worked very hard to get the viral transmission down".
The quarantine rule will apply to visitors from states where 10% of the population is infected with Covid-19 on a seven-day rolling average, Mr Cuomo said.
Nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas..
The quarantine will come into effect on Thursday.
Florida banned them, now they ban us. Only Fair!!

Fake news. They're always playing clips of the president's actual words to try to harm him.
My wife and I were going to meet a former coworker and his girlfriend on the patio of a local brewpub tonight. I explained to him last week that we’re being cautious and only socializing in small groups of friends we know well. An hour ago he texts me to say that we’ll be a group of five because a buddy of his might join. I backed out. Gotta admit I’m a little pissed at him.

should be, be a responsible adult. give your friends a heads up beforehand and let them decide and not at the last minute.

Great to watch the idiots at the commission meeting complaining. Sounded like NapaCat's friends. Comment such as ' Blocking God's breathing apparatus' . Palm Beach County commissioners were harangued by residents who accused them of obeying the devil, imposing a communist dictatorship and dishonoring the American flag.

Whackadoodles on parade.
Check out the finger-wagging Florida governor around 21 minutes.
This is from May 20, whose looks like a fool now? Hint: It's not the media.
The Governor of NJ has announced that anyone traveling into NJ from some other state with a large outbreak of the virus must quarantine for 14 days.
President Trump just got back from Arizona, which is having a surge in virus, and which would be covered by the NJ Governor's ban
President Trump is traveling shortly to NJ, and will not obey the Governor's quarantine order.
I guess the President is above the law after all.
