Thinking about the virus makes me even more a supporter of something since I was a teenager, space travel. Early liberal dogma in the 70s suggested money was wasted on NASA when we have so many problems on the Earth. As has been shown there were many benefits gleaned from the space program. However, there's a more important long-sighted goal of space travel, our planet is eventually doomed and the next pandemic might be the one that wipes out most of humanity. Or certainly an asteroid will obliterate all of civilization at some point. Interesting guesses, based on the information science currently has, predicts a 5km to 10km asteroid hits the Earth on average every 20 million years. The last one was the dinosaur extinctor 65 million years ago. That one was estimated to be 10 km. Think about only a six mile wide chunk of rock causing extinction of the human race. And one of them is due. And of course at the end of the line is the burnout and shift to red giant phase of our own Sun, which will cause the Earth to be vaporized inside the super-hot gaseous sphere.
So at the least, to guarantee the survival of the species, somebody's got to get off this planet and be able to live, not just on the Moon or Mars, but between the stars.
I'm on board with Space Force if it's without weaponry. We probably won't be encountering any aliens out there. Though a "super-duper" photon torpedo or two might not hurt.

It is not easy for TT and Napa here. I appreciate how frustrating it is when you're in the minority among a group who don't see the greatness and wisdom of the president. We look and see...well you know, the worst president on a monumental level in our lifetime...and they see a "stable genius." I know it's almost impossible to believe that intelligent men (I'm assuming at least a minimal level of education from people who can afford to be wine collectors and connoisseurs) listen to the drivel that daily (with Tweeting, hourly) comes out of this man's mouth and think--yeah, that's my guy. But there they are and they can't figure out what's wrong with us.
We can only hope that our long national nightmare ends this November. However for various reasons, such as cheating by asking foreign countries to help and that favorite Republican tactic--suppressing the vote, I'm not betting on it.
You know very little about my views on Trump but you make a lot of assumptions. The biggest problem is with the attitudes of those who are on the left side, for example gman’s response to my post which is very childish. Seems like some people can post their views in any manner they like, but cannot accept criticisms of people on their side of the aisle. Can you tell me that Cuomo’s orders for nursing homes to take Covid patients were reasonable and didn’t have any impact on the deaths of thousands of people in nursing homes who died from the virus? Cuomo fucked up and won’t take ANY responsibility for what happened. I don’t need to be from New York to see that.

The local papers here all rile against Cuomo. But do you know exaclty how many of the deaths were attributed to patients treated and released back into nursing homes vs those who got it from relatives visiting in the first place without PPEs?
You don't. I will tell you that the visitations and nurses without PPEs was a vastly larger issue vs patients treated, tested and put back into nursing homes.

The entire premise is basically: If you were treated in a hospital, cured of cv19, and deemed healthy enough to be discharged, you shouldn't go back into a nursing home because of fear that you can reinfect someone else in the nursing home.
But when it comes to state reopening, that same train of thought is no longer valid? 
A very rainy couple of days down here in South Florida. Ordinarily I'd be upset to see a holiday weekend ruined. This time I'm not so upset, if it keeps the idiots inside their houses instead of congregating at the beaches and parks.

Virus cases rising at a terrible rate here. Over 300 new in our county alone. Can see why, most idiots do not wear masks shopping, or dining. Only "recommended" as we have a very stupid a$$ kissing gov.
Scared about case rates next week. Vast vast majority of transmission is indoors. But, still...
I really think a lot of people are "done" with the virus, the masks, social distancing, etc. On Saturday night I drove by the ocean in my neighborhood and saw multiple cabana parties going on - people hanging around in cocktail attire (without masks) and drinking and talking and having a good time. Completely pre-Covid in feeling. I understand it is outdoors, and the chances of infection are lower, but I wouldn't be comfortable right now being in a large group outside.
The problem, as I see it, is that since we quarantined, we never saw the hospitals get overwhelmed, no one really knows anyone close to them who either has had the virus or died from it, so it doesn't seem as scary as it did in the beginning.
I have plans to go up to Lake George in a couple of weeks. I'm maintaining my social distancing and avoiding large groups as a precaution. The last thing I want to be is a spreader of the virus somewhere else. I believe NJ has been third in the country in the number of cases.
Well it is about to hit the fan very soon unfortunately for a lot of cities.
Roadblock into the Keys came down today - tourists allowed back today (they were here anyway in long term vacation rentals - mostly legal - and shorter term - completely illegal) - Easy to pick out either via rental golf carts, scooters or bikes and general cluelessness.
Anyway, everyone in town (even the open now people) are concerned with what is to come - we shall see
Happily the tennis courts were not crowded yesterday and people were behaving - unfortunately the hanging out, beer and bloody mary's and shrimp and snacks are a thing of the past.
We are going to our best friends' restaurant for the first time this evening - sitting outside despite the eat - Stef is not pleased but I insisted. Hopefully the "peaceful protest/rally" scheduled for this evening will not spiral out of control - if limited to locals - I am sure it will be fine - if we have been infiltrated with troublemakers - who knows.
It's hard to buy into the severity of the disease and the need for social distancing if you don't see much of it in your region.
In my neck of the woods, hospitalizations and intubations continue to decrease off the mid-April high. Youngest patient I've seen on a vent is 20 yrs old. Youngest I've seen with diffuse bilateral pneumonia, not on a vent, is 16.
Most patients who die from the virus, tend to die within the first week of being hospitalized. A neighbor of mine died 4 days ago after being on a ventilator for more than 2 months. What is also becoming obvious is that this not just a respiratory disease, but also a vascular disease. The virus apparently promotes thromboembolic events. Patients are dying from stroke, pulmonary emboli, and multisystem organ failure. Youngest patient I've seen with stroke from Covid is 32.
Well - the protest/march here was totally peaceful - that's good.
We had a nice dinner - but unfortunately for our friends - their restaurant was empty. Hopefully business will pick up soon. It was Monday and I am sure locals stayed home due to tourists coming and the protest March - but was definitely weird
