Weekend Summary
Since the schedule was very lackluster, I treated it as a weekend without college football, meaning golf and a social function at night. I have yet to watch even the Gator replay. Thus, my tardy post this week. The only games I caught live were the 4th Q of the OSU/Maryland tilt and the end of the Ole Miss/Vandy game (terrible call against OM there).
The Citadel Bulldogs in my presence are proclaiming victory for their 10-10 tie at the half in Tuscaloosa. At the half, Nick Saban must have threatened numerous things including a bad referral to NFL scouts and less bagmen visits. Alabama then played normal to win 50-17, but give Citadel credit, they scored points and made Tua play a lot.
The other powers won as usual. Clemson started slow with Trevor Lawrence missing throws, but they then overpowered Duke 35-6. Notre Dame, perhaps feeling a bit disrespected, made a statement win 36-3 over Syracuse in Yankee Stadium. Michigan sleptwalked over Indiana by 11. Georgia, OU and LSU all won easily. The only upset was Ok St upending WV 45-41, now making the Big 12 faithful hopeful that OU wins out.
Game of the day was in College Park Maryland battled Ohio St in a wild game filled with turnovers, points and weird plays. The Terps got a score late on a 3rd down fumble for a 7 point lead, but the Buckeyes matched it to send the game into OT at 45. OSU scored a TD and Maryland then scored to go one down. Interim coach Matt Canada went for the win on a 2 pt play, but the Terps QB missed a wide open receiver to lose 52-51. This game has to be remembered for the excruciating body language of Urban Meyer, but the Bucks have their showdown with Michigan next Saturday.
It is said that it is nearly impossible to have three undefeated teams, actually four if you count UCF, in the regular season. We pretty much know Clemson and Notre Dame are getting there, and if Tua is healthy, so is Bama. That then begs the question of whether it is the Big 10 champ, OU or Georgia for the final spot. At least we get a slate of games next weekend.

Well, Xichigan got the crap beat out of them, so you got half your wish. But the Cats are going to have a rough time if the Buckeyes play like that again. Awesome victory.

It was rivalry week, but the only real excitement came from the newer rivalries. Texas A&M outlasted (literally) LSU in an instant classic 74-72 in the fifth FBS game that went to 7 OTs. This was the most points ever scored in an FBS game, a game in which a few calls prolonged the game. All you need to know if that LSU's Coach O got a Gatorade bath when the Tigers thought they had won before a call was reversed, and then his shirt was dry before the game ended. It was a nine lives game for sure for the Aggies. OU again outscored a Big 12 foe 59-56 against West Virginia and gets to avenge Texas in the Big 12 Title Game.
Some things never change in a cruel way, Lucy always pulling the football from Charlie, and Jim Harbaugh attempting to beat Urban Meyer. In a shocking fashion, the Buckeyes blasted the Michigan defense, the previously top ranked defense, 62-39. This was Michigan's chance and they blew it, no other way to put it.
To the top now, the Iron Bowl was interesting for a bit with a 17-14 halftime score. Alabama then did what they always do, score and score often to win going away 52-21. The main question answered here was that Tua Tagovailoa was running and looked to be healthy. Alabama set a school record for points scored and won every game by at least 20 points, a feat only accomplished by Yale in 1888. South Carolina exposed Clemson's pass defense a bit, but the Cocks could not stop Clemson in a 56-35 game. My man Hunter Renfrow played his record final game for WRs and played his usual heady game (please draft him Panthers). Washington snuffed out the small Pac 12 chances for the playoff by beating Wazzou and the pirate.
As for the Florida Gators, I was thinking of cute things to say, but the best I have is that I am grateful to stop the streak and for a solid 9-3 season. The Gators had to beat the worst coached FSU team in an least 40 years, and fortunately they did 41-14. It is always said that this game helps in recruiting so that is what I am looking for here.
Good regular season and we can discuss playoff scenarios later.
Sorry, forgot Notre Dame winning a blah game against USC in LA 24-17. Georgia was a foregone conclusion.

Still been 14 years since UF has beaten FSU at home. If we dont get 5 new oline starters for next season that will probably fall too though.
What a terrible first year for Willie. I really like his offense and think both it and he can still work out. This oline was just a dumpster fire. We only have 1 tackle on the roster due to transfers/bad behavior. Our best guard moved to tackle, got hurt and only played in 3 games. There are a bunch of guys playing that have no business being in the program, let alone on the field. Need at least 2, probably 3 JUCO or grad transfers. We literally couldn't run the offense because the line was so bad. Our RBs averaged less than one yard before contact.
Need for Francois to not come back. Kid is a cancer and cant run the offense.
Special teams coach will be let go soon.
Bunch of juniors and seniors on defense need to not come back. Too many quiters.
Hopefully this staff lives up to its rep as ace recruiters and we keep the class together. Next year needs to be 9 wins to show a proof of concept and keep recruiting as well as he is now. If not. Hes done after 3 seasons.

The only positive for me in the outcome yesterday was that my daughter got to experience one Gator victory over FSU before she graduates next Spring, something the last two graduating classes could not say.
Although she will graduate without seeing a Gator basketball victory over the Noles in her 4 years, just like last year's class. Guess we're becoming a basketball school.
The silly season has started. Mack Brown returning to UNC, probably to stabilize the program. He will out together a nice staff and recruit well.
The big rumor out there is that the Gus Bus could be out at Auburn. Reports, mind you social media and message boards, are on fire that the $32 million buyout is no problem but that they are waiting on a big name coach to agree to even sillier money.
Its always interesting to see what happens when alumni get upset that their team did not do as well as they want and demand heads to roll. Who do they think they are going to get to make things dramatically better within one or two years? Gus has done well at Auburn as has Harbaugh, although not as well as some alumni want. Who are you going to get to replace them if you are not happy and what does that say about the program, will coaches want to go where there is discontent?

Don't get excited by a 67 year old that hasn't coached in 5 years and was mediocre except when he had one really good QB (even if he played for FSU). His first year at UNC was my second at grad school. Some are saying he would bring Chizik (who did a good job as DC with UNC in their '15 season) and Kliff Kingsbury, which sounds good, but I doubt happens. Don't think any other school would have 2 coaches who won NC's (only four are active today). UNC is, and always will be, a basketball school. Very little real interest in college football there as it is a basketball state like Kentucky or Indiana.

I've been saying all year FSU's oline is the worst in the power five. I was waaaaay underselling it. Probably one of the worst in FBS. Here are the Pro Football Focus grades for FSU's lineman.

One thing is for sure, the NCAA needs to force Notre Dame into a conference if they want to compete in the BCS. They are probably at the talent of LSU or Florida which both have 3 losses but a good win, yet ND is 11-0 but unlike the other schools that might be part of the CFP get to take a break and rest up. We should punish Catholics for molesting children, not enable them. God we are stupid.
One guy on ESPN-U radio suggested that Notre Dame should play the best team from the group of 5 on conference championship weekend. I like that idea. Certainly this year, it would prove the legitimacy of UCF's unbeaten record and whether they are a contender or pretender.
Another thought- Expand the playoff to 8 teams and eliminate conference championships. Have the quarterfinal playoffs between the 8 best teams on what would normally be championship weekend. The idea that conference champions automatically get bids to the CFP is dumb. Pitt or northwestern don't deserve to play for the national title if they win their games today.
Maybe LSU and UF should win more games if they are so talented.
ND only played and beat 11 power 5 teams. Only played one non power 5. LSU played 4. UF played 3 and had one cancelled. Get out of here with that garbage.
ND will join a conference when thats the only path to the playoffs. They like their independence and it allows them to have great rivalries all over the country. I would never want them to stop playing USC or give up the ability to schedule anyone any where.

Last time I checked, the CFP had nothing to do with conference champions. Their charge is simply to pick the four best teams. And history proves such, as when Bama got in last year without being in the SEC championship game, and may lose tonight and still get in (I would put a one loss Bama in at 4 ahead of OU).

We may have seen it yesterday, the best game of the year between the two best teams (Clemson may argue here). Alabama and Georgia played the sequel to the Title Game last year in the same building with a similar result, with an ironic twist. Georgia HC Kirby Smart came out with a great game plan on both sides of the ball, have Jake Fromm pick apart the defense on perimeter throws ala Deshaun Watson while Georgia rushed three guys and confused Tua's decision making. It worked great for three quarters with the Dawgs up 28-14, but a missed short FG by a reliable kicker gave the Tide a chance. Tua battled two sprained ankles and finally had to leave the game down 28-21. Enter Jalen Hurts, a former SEC player of the year and 26-2 as a starter, who then completed a 3rd and 10 the Jerry Juedy to tie it at 28.
Then came an epic dumb call, ranked up there with any example you can recall, a fake punt at midfield on 4th and 11. Georgia inserted last year's #1 recruit, QB Justin Fields as the up man to run a fake which fooled no one except maybe the man who called it. Bama was in punt safe and no one ever fools Nick Saban. Smart had inserted Fields throughout the game on selected first downs, obviously to keep him from transferring since Jake Fromm is the clear starter, and it made no sense. Alabama stopped the ill advised play, took the ball down the field to score on a Hurts run for the 35-28 win. It was clear Bama was tight (DJ tight in a major championship) and not playing well while Georgia was playing well, so the Dawgs blew this one.
As for the other games, OU got revenge on Texas 39-27 in a very good game. Kyler Murray may have won the Heisman with his great performance yesterday. Clemson did the expected on Pitt 42-10, no worries there. Ohio St beat Northwestern, but may have needed to win by 50 (we will see). UCF came from way down to beat Memphis.
As for the playoff, it is both simple and complicated. Alabama and Clemson are no brainers. Notre Dame hasn't necessarily looked like one of the best teams, but they went undefeated through an entire season playing a power 5 schedule and you really can't penalize them for the competition not playing up their billing. I don't see how the committee leaves out N.D.
If they want the best of the rest, the have to pick Georgia, but I don't see that happening. I think the nod will go to O.U., because they are going to argue that that a 1 loss conference champ trumps a 2 loss non- conference champ. Hence, conference championships do matter. We will find out the answer in a couple of hours.
UCF should be here. 25 straight wins.

There is no way they will let Georgia play Alabama again IMO, there is no way ND drops to number 4 IMO, so I’m afraid Georgia gets screwed.
As I, you and many have said all year. It appears there is Alabama, then Clemson and Georgia, then a drop off to ND, OU and Ohio St. I just can’t overlook Ohio St. losing by 29 to a 6 win Purdue, so they are out IMO.
I don't think they will include Georgia, given it has two losses. That means more than likely that OU gets in and OSU gets left out. If UCF wants to get into the discussions, they will have to play some decent teams.
There really needs to be at least an 8 team playoff, you could have the champions of the big 5 conferences and then three at large. One more game is not a big deal and I could argue going for a 16 team playoff even.
It ultimately comes down to TV viewership, and what the fans want to watch. The college football world just saw a great game between Bama and Georgia and really doesn't want see a rematch. I think everyone really now wants to see what Murray or Haskins can do against tthe Bama defense. Saban won the right not to have to face Georgia again this year.
I think OSU is better than OU, but not sure who should get the berth, given OSU got killed by Purdue and had some poor outings where they won. OU beat the only team they lost to in the Big 12 championship.
Just saw that Notre Dame would be an underdog to Georgia, Ohio State and OU.
The replay of the NCG from last year was a great game and may be the best game that we see in the Playoffs. But much of that depends upon Tua’s health, as a gimpy Tua makes them much more beatable.
This year would have been perfect for six teams, giving the top two seeds byes in the first round. Seeds 3-6 playing a game in two weeks at the home stadium of seeds 3 and 4.
I personally like the current 4 team playoff format, even though I think the 8 team format will be inevitable. The 4 team format means EVERY game counts. I don't think it was a given that BAMA was in if they lost to Georgia. One of the best games within the past 2 years, was the OSU- Michigan game 2 years ago that OSU won in OT and went on to the playoff, and Michigan was left out. In an 8 team format, both teams would have been in the playoff and that game would have been meaningless.
On the other hand, an 8 team playoff would mean that 2 more of the New Years 6 bowl games would be more meaningful. Other than the 2 playoff games, the other games weren't that interesting because the teams had nothing to play for. The star players sat the games out to avoid injury. UCF celebrated their win over Auburn, but Auburn had mentally checked of the game.
