Nolan, is that the 7-8" cigar and a small ring size? (40?) If so, I see them here in SF. I think they only make a couple 100 boxes a year.

Maybe not top-10 list material, but they're very solid, reliable performers.

I like Quesada, too, particularly Espana. It, and Herrera Esteli are about the only NCs that I smoke.

Absolutely! When the short robusto first came out, it was my favorite short smoke by a large, large margin. I haven't seen those in a long time, but all the vitolas are decent or better smokes IMHO.

Do you find Dominican tobacco to age well for that length of time? The only DR cigars I've smoked that had any significant time on them (15+ yrs) seemed "flat."

This will be my first try at going that distance with non-Cuban tobacco. The one I had the other night, while delightful with Brazil nut, coffee and dark rum primary flavors, was still a powerful and "youngish" smoker. I am only going to guess that the higher price tag means the Fuentes would allocate their most premium tobacco for these. Coupled with the larger size enabling something as close as possible to using the whole leaf, hopefully those factors allow for rewarding extended aging.
I started the Ohio State vs. Notre Dame game with an Opus X Black Orchid, a slim panatela with a fan-tail cap like the BBMF, available only (as far as I know) at Casa Fuente in Vegas. This was acquired a few years ago on a trip with some of this forum's most esteemed (and generous) members. This was wow-intense, with lots of bitter coffee and wet leaf character. Paired it with a spiced rum and Coke, as this needed plenty of sweetness to balance it. Despite its modest size, it lasted all the way to the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Not necessarily the most potent Opus X, but very intense, focused flavors... brings back great memories. Cool

Time for a repeat!

Lovely choice of beverage to pair with this cigar. For such a 'thin' cigar it packs a lot of flavor doesnt it! Definitely not a vitola I seek but fun to smoke once in awhile.

I find in general Opus X requires time, minimum of 3-5 years for the smaller ring guage cigars and 5-10 years for the larger guages.

I assume you gentlemen are referring to the trip I was graciously included in, I have several cigars left that were purchased at Casa....may be time to "re-live" what we smoked at the Casa together.

Over the new years weekend....at my local shop, my buddy that works there, we enjoyed a BHK 52 from 2010. These are in such a lovely place right now.

Happy New Year boys!

Perfect timing, Godfather.

I'm in the office today for the first time in three weeks. I was gifted an Opus X 6 20 year anniversary box of their cigars. ( impressive packaging)

Sounds like patience will be required.

I have a bunch of Illusione, including the ~hl~ lancero. Not the maduro, however. Just the "natural."

I swore this would be my last ever Illusione as everyone I have tried had major burn & construction issues. Unfortunately, this cigar was amazing in flavor and performance. Just as I was about to get out, they sucked me right back in.

Haha! Well, I have had very good luck with Illusione. The Rothchildes and Epernay lines are my favorites. The only burn issues I have had have been with Epernay "Le Petite," which seems to require regular relighting.

Much agreed! The Rothchildes is my #1 sub-$6, go-to stick, and the Epernay Le Taureau and Le Matin have been very consistent performers in my experience. Also, if you get a chance to try the ~eccj~ 20th, I'd highly recommend it.

Indeed! I'm glad that it was so well constructed that I was able to smoke it very slowly. The cooler burn helped balance the yin/yang. Big Grin Wink

I wish I had been able to buy more, because my patience hasn't matched the limits they put on purchases.

I had one of those earlier this year (many, many thanks!), and it was other-worldly!

The Rothchildes were my original go to winter short smoke, but the burn issues drove me crazy. I much prefer the flavor & performance of the Tatuaje Reserva Petite Cazadores as a short smoke.

Interesting. I have never had burn issues with the *R*, only with some Epernay. And those Epernay issues were when I lived in Hawaii, which is rather humid. I tried dry-boxing before smoking, which did help a bit. Now that I'm in a drier part of the US, I don't have much of an issue.

I'd be interested in trying the Davidoff Especiales <<7>> Robusto Real. If your store has some, let me know, as I would be interested in picking up some.

I can ask. But I hope you recognize the 75% tobacco tax in N.Y. heh. Yes I didn't mistype. Plus the 8.825% sales tax

I live in NYS, so I know the taxes, but thanks for checking! Of the Limited Editions, I might be interested in the Art 2014 or Year of the Monkey. Other than that, I go for others, such as Oro Blanco.

i was going to pick up some of the year of the monkey personally acutally. I'll save you a few sticks if the price is reasonable

n thanks for the suggestion mds

Never been a huge Davidoff fan, but I do like the Nicaragua puro. Interested to try the fairly new Escurio.

You can take the reviews in Halfwheel with the same grain of salt as reviews of wines in WS. That said, Halfwheel (7/15/15) gave the Escurio 86pts, with the following summary comments based on smoking 3 cigars:

The Davidoff Escurio Gran Toro had me locked in and ready to sing its praises for the first two thirds, but the final third had me rethinking just how much praise I could heap on it in good conscience. While the last few inches aren't a complete disaster, they undo the beautiful balance and presentation the first four or so inches delivered. Yes, the draw was a bit loose on every sample, but I'd be willing to overlook that pretty easily given the way the flavors and complexity were executed in the first half. While I'm not crazy about any of the sizes, I think you'll get a good idea of what this cigar has to offer pretty well from either the Gran Toro or Robusto; just be prepared for a rough landing that may have you reconsidering a return trip on this journey to Brazilian tobacco.

As for the 2016 Year of the Monkey, HW (92pts; again based on 3 cigars) says:

I have smoked each of the previous limited edition zodiac releases from Davidoff and while all of them have various characteristics in their favor, none of them have blown me away. The Year of the Monkey comes closest so far, with a decently complex profile, excellent construction from beginning to end and an underlying maple sweetness that really sets off the rest of the profile. Although the flavors that are present are not overwhelmingly strong, they are quite distinct and it is an easy cigar to enjoy.

I am very curious about the Especiales <<7>> Robusto Real, which they give 99pts (!!):

The first third of the Davidoff Especiales <<7>> Robusto Real was very good, but it wasn't sublime like the next two. While that cost the cigar a point, it added so much more. The Davidoff Especiales was able to show improvement and progression--even though there wasn't much left to improve on—and that added an additional character that simply would not have been there otherwise. This was a masterclass in how to blend a cigar to not only improve upon each puff, but more importantly, interact with both the mouth and nose—and in at times perfect harmony. The Davidoff Especiales <<7>>, as evidenced by the score, is the greatest cigar I’ve ever smoked from a technical standpoint. The flavors—mouth, retrohale, finish—were simply outstanding. And the construction was equally impressive, burning with a near perfect burn line for over 90 percent of the cigar. As objectively as one can do something so subjective as to score a cigar, this is essentially as good as it gets.

I have smoked a lot of Davidoff, but never one that I would put in that stratosphere. I have had only one Cuban, for that matter, that would rank that high.
