Celebrating Thanksgiving with a Siglo VI from '08, and I'm in heaven. Started a bit too stiff on the draw for me, but after gently working it, it was perfect afterwards. What a wonderful stick! So smooth and complex! It amazes me how dark the last couple years' releases are, compared to the much lighter hue of the '08s. I'd love to hear the godfather's take on this.

With Behike disappearing from the market, this is the finest cigar available I'm thinking.
Recently celebrated a film release with the Montecristo EL 2008. I gotta' say: I was disappointed. Draw was rather firm, because the tobacco near the head was over-packed IMHO, but the middle and foot of the cigar were less dense, making for some interesting burn patterns. Taste: meh. It had some nice leather notes but otherwise lacked complexity, and the flavors it did exhibit weren't very deep. A friend brought this back from a Caribbean trip. Fake? I could be convinced it was, but he swears he got it from a legit Habanos S.A. store. <shrug>

Stick, I feel your pain. I have had more poorly performing cigars this year than all the years of my enjoying cigars, combined. Frown

I don't know if I have had more this year or not, but I've certainly had issues with some Montecristos recently (other than the #2).

I've been loving Sancho Panza recently. Picked up some belicosos when I was in Switzerland last week.

Now that you mention it, I think that's true for me too. At one point I even thought that maybe my palate had become desensitized... then I'd have a BHK52 or a Silo VI, and it'd become clear: "Nope; everything's just fine!" Big Grin Cool

I have not had any recent ones Stick, the most recent ones I have are from 2010 and those are just a few, most are 08' or older. I assume you are speaking of the wrapper and not the ash. I wonder what there flavor profile will be and if it is at all noticably different.

Interesting statement....could it be because you are smoking newer stuff? Id love to hear what your "go to" sticks of late. I have had an occasional lousy cigar, but more often than not its due to a different brand or line of cigar from what I typically smoke. If we are talking about island sticks, well I havent purchased anything other than older vintages of late as I prefer to have stuff with age. Most of those have been very consistant for me.

Stick, I have had that EL about 5-6 times and it has been lovely and consistant for me...if I had to guess....it was a fake. Plus, EL's are not easy to come by and these stores on the islands tend to have more of the recognizable cigars rather than rarer stuff...

Yes, speaking of the wrapper. The only one I've tried didn't seem distinctly uncharacteristic, but I will say that it wasn't the greatest young Siglo VI I've ever had. 'Smelled great though!

Yeah, and considering that it was a 2008 EL, purchased this summer... I was kinda' hoping against the odds.
I lit up a LFD La Nox for the Aldo vs. McGregor fight, expecting a war that would be accompanied by a great stick. Well, after a 13-second knockout, it left me with plenty of time to focus on the stogie! Big Grin

Despite the very dark color, this is fairly smooth, with a little bit of lots of different flavors, most notably coffee, chocolate, and roasted raisin, but with enough earthiness and menthol to keep it from seeming too sweet or decadent. Easily the best stick I've ever had from La Flor Dominicana.

Bought them in summer 2012 and they have been stored ideally, still in foil and coffin.

What do you mean by treat them? I like to leave a small crack open in my boxes within my humidors, so the same applies for the coffin. Is it necessary, most likely not, but it makes me feel better. Not sure if thats what you are asking?

Mainly I'm wanting to know if this is a cigar that will benefit from aging. Smoke now or later and how long will it take to smoke these monsters.
Speaking of top-10 lists, it just occurred to me to check out Cigar Aficianado's list, and I gotta' say: I agree with this list more than any other I've seen from them. What's odd to me, however, is that 1) My Father Le Bijou Torpedo Box Pressed, 2) Ramon Allones Specially Selected, 5) Padron 50 Years Natural, 6) Illusione Ultra Op.9, 9) Bolivar Belicoso Fino, and 10) Liga Privada #9 were all top picks for me in years past. I also agree with the Ashton Symmetry being a top-10 type of cigar, but it's the only one in the top 10 that I know to be a recent release. Is this an indication that it's been a down year for new releases, or do I misunderstand their list? I'll grant that my most memorable smokes this year were generally rather small-production, hard-to-find sticks. I'm curious to hear others' thoughts.

Forgot about the top 10 actually, but Ramone Allones and Bolivar are always top notch cigars and have been under rated IMO. The cigar I probably smoke the most on the golf course is My Father Le Bijou Toro's.....just a fantastic cigar each and every time, just glad the torpedo got the number one slot and not the toro Wink

Liga #9, is a good cigar currently, not worth the money of late IMO. The price has shot up and the quality is no where near what it used to be 5 years ago. I still have a handful of #9's from 5-6 years ago and they are amazing currently, perhaps todays #9's will improve with time? Im not convinced yet.
