Agree with clipping, punch brings all of the tar & nicotine into a small hole and will make the cigar stronger and hotter 1/2 way down when you draw through that small of an area especially if it is a young cigar.
If you have a cigar shop nearby ask if they have some cedar strips, instead of a match, light the cedar to light your cigar & avoid getting sulphur on your smoke.

Any idea what the box code was?

I have had several 52's from the March and June 2010 box and I have to say it was one of the better sticks I have had in a long time. Its already developed "some" complexity and the creaminess of the smoke is very heavy and unique. This will only get better IMO. I also feel the 54 will be the better of the 2 sticks in the long run. The 56 needs loads of time.

Sorry CSM it dissapointed you, glad you tried one before buying a box.

I think it was one of the Feb 2010 Box codes. Was very surprised at the lack of complexity. During the second third, some chocolate and cedar notes starte to emerge, but I found the stick mostly woody and showed mostl espresso notes. Definitely not worth the $60 it costs up here. Decided to pick up a box of the Monte Grand Edmundo EL 2010s instead of the BHKs.

Hmmm...perhaps its entering a "dumb" period, being a year old. It wouldnt surprise me one bit as there is a lot of tobacco in there. The last one I had was from the June box code and I loved it.

At 60$ I dont blame you for being a little peed. That is just absurd...I wouldnt give up completely on the BHK, maybe try another in a year or two. I wish I could help you out!!

I've used cedar strips many times and they are effective. However, once you a wooden match burn past the sulpher, you're generally good to go. Obviously this is much easier with the longer cigar matches. My choice, unless dealing with a breeze.

Well personal preference really. I cut at a 45 degree angle approx. But, I have tried the straight cut and I seem to have to take too much to get the same draw, which has caused the wrapper to unravel at times.

I have heard it allows the smoke to hit the upper pallet better, in turn, making the flavors more pronounced, but Im not really sure that really occurs.

Try it and let me know how you like it.
Just got back from Cuba on Wednesday. Nothing like laying on the beach drinking mojitos one day and waking up to a snowstorm the next. Frown

Enjoyed the following while there:

Cohiba Siglo VI
Cohiba Robusto
Monte #2
Partagas Serie P No.2
3 custom rolls (Robusto's similar in profile to HDM Epicure No. 2)

Thanks for the tip Mav. Those custom rolls were perhaps the finest constructed cigars I've had. Great roller. Nice shop. Didn't care for the CDH on 39th however. Didn't make it into Havana unfortunately but did pick up the following boxes in Varadero.

Montecristo Grand Edmundo
RYJ The Duke
RYJ Short Churchills
Cohiba Siglo VI
Cohiba Robusto
Trinidad Robusto Extra
Trinidad Robusto T
Trinidad Reyes
Partagas Serie P No.2 (2 x 3packs)

Very happy. Cool Much happier than my wife was. Eek

Nice sticks you picked up WineDaddy. Did you come across the BHKs, or inquire about them?
Just curious your experience if you did.

I definitely inquired. They were at the top of my list as well as the Gran Reserva and any 2011 new releases. There were none available in Varadero and I got the distinct impression they were tired of being asked about the BHK's. I was disappointed not to make it into Havana but I left it till later in the week and one of my kids got sick and I didn't want to leave her or my wife with all 3 kids for the entire day.

Hi Wine Daddy,

Sorry for the spanish inquisition but I think I might be heading there this weekend and have never been to that area. Was it easy to bring that many back with you? Any good deals? Where did you stay?

Any good restos?

Cheers.
We stayed at the Tryp Peninsula which we were happy with. There are nicer resorts that exclude kids under 18. We never left the resort to eat. But from what I saw there is not much choice in Varadero. Cuba is not known for its (good) food.

If you are booking last minute and are not traveling with children perhaps you should consider Havana? Best food, cigars, entertainment, history/sites, Cuban ladies. If you do go to Varadero I would still say go to Havana for the day. Avoid the resort bus trips and either take a taxi or arrange for a driver to stay with you for the day and take you around. I was told you could do this for about $200.

I had about 110 cigars total and my wife and I claimed 50 each. The Cohiba Robustos were a box of 25 the rest were in 10's and 12's. The cigars are ALL good deals of course as they are 1/3 to 1/4 of what you pay here. I was going to blame poor math if I got searched. I thought we were going to get looked up as we claimed $1100 for the cigars which surprised the customs agent. I guess most people claim their 50 fakes and claim the 50 bucks they paid.

Hey WD,

Thanks. I think the deal and norm was just to chill in Varadero, but why avoid the bus trips from hotel? You get less?

We were definitely going to go to Havana though.

Thanks for the cigar info.

I'm sure you will enjoy any tour you take. However, in general you will have little free time and that will be spent at a flea market shopping for handmade Cuban items. It will take you longer to get to Havana as you stop for the various pickups and you will waste time stooping for the touristy pictures and lunches. And have no control over how your time is spent.

If you arrange for a driver or just taxi around you will be able to spend your time where you want to including stops at all the best cigar shops.

There was one tour offered by our agent which included a full day tour in Havana with dinner at arestaurant and taking in a show at the Tropicana, staying overnight at a 4star hotel and having free time until 2-3pm the next day. That may be your best bet.

Have fun and tell us how it went.
